With less than 48 hours to go before he is scheduled to depart the White House, Trump issued several last-minute executive orders Monday.
One seeks to establish a new “Garden of American Heroes,” with statues of dozens of figures from U.S. history. The eclectic list of proposed statues includes jazz legend Louis Armstrong, poet Emily Dickinson, explorer and colonizer Christopher Columbus, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and political theorist Hannah Arendt.
“Each individual has been chosen for embodying the American spirit of daring and defiance, excellence and adventure, courage and confidence, loyalty and love,” the executive order states.
A second executive order removes restrictions on carrying concealed weapons for current and retired federal law enforcement officers, federal judges and prosecutors, and the heads of certain agencies.
Another executive order, billed as one “protecting Americans from overcriminalization through regulatory reform,” effectively limits potential criminal liability for anyone who commits “unintentional” violations of regulations.
Representatives from Biden’s transition team did not immediately respond to whether the incoming administration would seek to keep or rescind the orders.
