Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Friday vowed to “open up” libel laws in order to sue media outlets that write “purposely negative” and “horrible” articles about him.

“I’m gonna open up our libel laws, so when they write purposely negative and horrible, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money,” Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

“We’re going to open up those libels laws,” he added. “So that when The New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when The Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money.”

"You see, with me, they're not protected, because I'm not like other people, but I'm not taking money. I'm not taking their money. We're going to open up libel laws, and we're going to have people sue you like you've never got sued before."

Yet another moronic thing that Trump has said, but since it was him the media and average Trump supporter will ignore it.

Nice try...not exactly what he said

What did he say then? I need your source of course all I can find is biased anti-Trump reports.

"I love free press. I think it's great," he said Saturday on Fox News Channel, before quickly adding, "We ought to open up the libel laws, and I'm going to do that."

The changes envisioned by the celebrity businessman turned Republican front-runner would mean that "when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," he said at a rally Friday in Fort Worth, Texas.

Is he a genius? A lot of dum dums out there right now who have been trained to hate and fear the media thinking this is a stellar idea.

He's executing a flawless hijacking of the party using the anti-pc, anti-press, anti-immigration foundation they teed up for him... is he not a buffoon who tripped into this?

Well Hillary and Cruz are too smart to make such a proposal, but she's congentinal liar and Ted thinks Jesus is running his campaign, so take your pick.

Blatant appeal to the tea party by Trump.

Good. I hope he runs those commies out of the media. It's about time the Obama press had a turnover in exchange for REAL journalists.

I bet the evil liberal media covered this for free and I bet his poor supporters clapped at the thought of a billionaire suing to keep information about him out of their hands.

He said that he would relax libel laws so that when newspapers/media post false and outrageous information, they can be held accountable.

So if they write something that hurts your butt, you call it "purposefully negative" and sue. Sara Palin will be doing a whole lot of suing.

I remember being in 6th grade, I think. My mom and dad let me watch this mini-series on TV called "Holocaust." By today's standards it is barely moving. At the time it was horrific. I'd never heard of or knew about the genocide, or what genocide even was. What puzzled me the most, and puzzled me for most of my adult life, was "HOW did the people of Germany allow this to happen???" And, now... it makes perfect sense! They loved it! They cheered for it. And, they got it... they got it just as ordered. And, it's still on the menu.

Why anyone supports him is beyond me.
Easy.

He's an enigma.

Every other GOP candidate is awful.

Enigma is better than awful. He could turn out to be awful, too, and it shouldn't come as a shock if that happens - but you don't know. You do know with the rest of them.

I've been hoping Rubio would convince me that he's an acceptable risk but he just isn't.

Left off this list explicitly is the hinted at explosion of the debt as he has a "Reagan like" build up of our military.

I don't agree with him, but thread title is very exaggerated. Libel isn't specifically freedom of press, and can be opened up without throwing out the First.

Typical Trump. Says something stupid. His supporters cheer.

There is no federal libel law; each state has their own. Long-settled federal law says to violate the First Amendment, a publisher must made a false statement with the requisite constitutional malice for public figures, such as Trump. It's the correct standard, no matter what you think of certain segments of the press.

Any other standard, and the Courtrooms would be packed with cases trying to determine if statements are "false" - which is actually harder to do than you think. Did Trump have a sweat mustache? Does Splenda taste like sugar because it's made from sugar (when it's also made via a complex chemical process that starts with parts of the plant that aren't used to make table sugar)? Are McDonald's cheese sticks made with 100% cheese (when they have a dusting of starch to prevent clumping).

And if you think I'm kidding, the Splenda case -- dealing with the "truth" of 9 words -- went more than 7 years in court IIRC.

It really is mind blowing. The entire Trump fiasco is the voters fault. He should have been in 5th or 6th place.

Really?

Well, who puts him on every media outlet nearly every day?

ABC, NBC, CBS

Hell FOX spent most of January & February bashing him.

Megyn Kelly attacked his record straight away during the early debate.

Tell the moronic liberal news outlets to stop covering every dumbass thing he says.

Less coverage, less support.

Liberal media will be complicit in his election if it comes to pass.

Actually, if Trump is beaten, they may have saved the country. Depends on how you look at it.

I don't agree with him, but isn't what he is proposing pretty much exactly what the libel laws are in the UK?

And on the other side of that same coin is Hilliary and her lies.

Honestly, whatever perceived lies Hillary may have done doesn't even register with the rhetoric Trump is saying. He's talking about a wholesale dismantling of the Bill of Rights.

Trump is giving a rally to his sheep in Arkansas now. He's repeating the same drivel as he always does and his sheep love it.

I can't wait to vote against him.
