Edward R. Martin Jr., a Missouri lawyer who helped organize the “Stop the Steal” movement to keep Donald Trump in office after his 2020 election loss and who defended several Jan. 6 rioters in court, has been nominated by Trump to become the U.S. attorney for D.C. He has had the role on an interim basis and has already been dismissing Capitol riot charges and firing those who prosecuted the cases.

Martin, 54, took over the top D.C. federal prosecutor role Jan. 21 and immediately began reshaping the office in a way that aligned with Trump’s preferences. Late last month he fired about 30 federal prosecutors who had worked on Jan. 6 cases and suggested on X that he was aiming to investigate Democratic leaders and former Justice Department officials who had been involved in the prosecutions.

“Since Inauguration Day, Ed has been doing a great job as Interim U.S. Attorney, fighting tirelessly to restore Law and Order, and make our Nation’s Capital Safe and Beautiful Again. He will get the job done,” Trump posted Monday morning on his Truth Social account, announcing the nomination.
While critics have raised concerns about politicization of the U.S. attorney’s office and the Justice Department in general, Martin over the weekend reposted a post on X that said, “Where does it say in the Constitution that the Department of Justice is independent from POTUS?”
Martin will have to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
