President Donald Trump’s freeze on federal spending has stuck hundreds of Iowa and other Midwest farmers with millions of dollars in bills for conservation work they carried out under programs to help improve the region’s soil health and water quality.

About 1,000 farmers in Midwestern states are owed $11 million — roughly $10 million of it in Iowa — under federal initiatives that pledged to pay them for planting soil-stabilizing cover crops and undertaking other conservation initiatives in 2024, the Iowa Soybean Association says.

Trump’s actions, part of a broad government review now underway, also leave in doubt another $86 million promised farmers under a five-year "climate smart" agriculture initiative approved during the Biden administration.

Bad bills should be disposed of,.. I'd be surprised if these participants come away without some level of reimbursement..
I wouldn't. Several were owed school loan debt reimbursement for serving in certain communities. Trump canceled that program during his first term and they received nothing.

I think my previous statements of "bad bills should be disposed of", and "dispose of the bill" would indicate agreement with that...
Then why are you here cheering on illegal cancellations of payments and contracts that are still "the law"?

I'm not,.. I'm saying shit can the bill and then litigate the contracts for closure,.. Done.
This is dumb. If the contract was valid then you are suggesting citizens sue the government to get what they were contractually owed? Why should both private citizens and our governmentment waste money, time and the court staff over something the government owes?

Upstanding people, and upstanding nations, stand behind their contractual commitments…you know like Trump keeps whining re:NATO.

So like a few thousand per farmer. And they'll still get their money, they'll just have to wait a bit. And Iowa will be red in the 2028 election too, and these farmers will still vote red. Oh darn.

why should those contracts need to be ligitated? because someone doesn't like them after they were signed and executed?

you understand how contracts work, right?

I do,.. and the process would involve closing out these contracts in the fairest manner possible while making every effort to protect the federal checkbook...

I'm no farmer, and I'm all for supporting them with fiscal help. But wouldn't planting soil-stabilizing cover crops and undertaking other conservation initiatives be something they would do in their own best interest, regardless of government incentives?

Many of those things aren't necessarily in their short-term interests, and can cost them yields or other direct costs that aren't recoverable for years.

You would think so, but reality is the opposite.

it's just incredible

people did work under a contract that agreed to pay them back for that work

now trump wants to retroactively cancel the contracts

how any one could excuse this is beyond me

Just following his blueprint in regard to how he stiffed contractors that worked on his Casino that caused many to go bankrupt and unable to pay their employees. In his eyes they are just suckers and losers.

Well to be honest, nothing is happening right now... this is all under review.
what is under review?

compliance with the contract is already reviewed. it's not like trump admin officials are going out to work sites to ensure the work was properly done

it's being "reviewed" to determine whether they feel like paying the contracts or not

Remember when Trump stiffed campaign sites/arenas/venues????

It's not like this should surprise people.

And the time when one of his microphones cut out when he was talking...he publicly proclaimed..."They're not getting paid".

Don't feel the least bit of sympathy.

This is quite a bit of hype.

Cover crop use in Midwest hasn't changed much in 60 years. Even under Biden, environmentally friendly initiatives were a joke. CRP being one of them.

There isn't enough incentive and driving I 80 shows that very well.
