Abraham Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union and end slavery even though the Civil War was horrific.

George McClellan ran against Lincoln in the 1864 Presidential Campaign and wanted to end the war even if it meant the South could secede and keep slavery.

The Trumpers PEACE AT ALL COST, sound like McClellan.

The Confederacy was still viable in the summer before the '64 election. McClellan wasn't the "peace at all costs" guy but the faction of the Dem party he represented - the Copperheads - was. Northerners were tired of the war and there were rumblings favoring McClellan. Fortunately, Farragut took Mobile and Sherman took Atlanta and the Confederacy was on the verge of collapse by election day.
