Trust Fran’s evaluation skills.

Whoever we end up with in this recruiting class I will support wholeheartedly. Fran is a great talent evaluator. We can’t get them all. If Fran wants them, I want them. We will get some quality players. We will lose some quality players. That is the nature of recruiting. Hopefully Bowen and Dix pull the trigger. If we can add Filipowski to the mix, I will be elated.

I trust his evaluation skills. What worries me is how often he can't land his top targets.

I would be elated with a class of Bowen, Dix, Filipowski and Wessler.

Any gravy on top of that, Schutt instead of Dix or Aidan Shaw instead of Wessler and I would do cartwheels in my living room.

He is really good at talent evaluation....I think/hope that I learned my lesson with the Murray twins. I was shocked, stunned, wondering what the H was going on when the news broke that they had been offered and committed. I think I watched the star system, the rating/listing of players way to much. I even listened to some of the "experts" on here (I admit that I give some credence to those who saw them in HS). On top of that, we were in the middle of XF going to Ames and the Sibly kid picking Georgetown....and I thought they were fall backs.

In the end, they (at least Keegan & probably Kris) were as talented as most of the top targets on the board....who would have thought that Keegan Murray would have had a better year than XF before last year started?

Like a previous poster said. Iowa misses on the elite guys more times than not. That's really the only knock, and would definitely help this program get to the next level.

I played college basketball before the level of evaluation they have today. In my recruiting class they brought in a much more highly regarded recruit at my position. I ended up beating him out. Sometimes the kids that have always been the star try to get by on their athleticism or size. Often times some of them don’t have a strong work ethic. If you get skid with natural talent that also works hard, you have a star.

When they were graduating from high school I said I wish there was a way Kenyon's sons could end up playing for the Hawks. I had seen them play a bunch and thought they were nice complimentary guards or small forwards who could be contributors down the road. Fast forward a year after going to that Academy and those guy both grew several inches and were big time players. Fran knew it and I was elated when they committed to Iowa. Kenyon made one of the best decisions in the history of basketball to send them for a year of post graduate bb tutoring. They are both high major players now. Great character kids as well, which is even more important.

I second everything you said. I watched them a lot in high school, too, talked with Kenyon several times, and one of the biggest things they needed was a bit of time for physical maturation and an adjustment to their growth.

It’s Fran’s coaching that is the problem. How many B10 championships has he won? How many Final Four’s have the Hawks played in? It’s sad that some get excited about recruiting. Do those people have any expectations for winning ? We just had a once in a lifetime player of the year and didn’t win anything significant.

In another thread, you posted about Fran bringing to Iowa City highly talented kids. As everyone can see below, when you talked about those talented kids, you lumped Dasonte Bowen, Kyle Filipkowski, Josh Dix and Aiden Shaw together.

And then, before anyone has committed, you preemptively bitched about Fran whiffing on all of them.

Will Iowa get 100%
of the talented targets they bring on campus? Of course not. But will Fran whiff on all of them, like you wrote, and as people can see below? Of course not, because, after all, it looks like we will land Bowen & likely Dix.

And @silasstarr and others were correct in calling you out in that thread, too.

This is the most talent taking officials in the same month to Iowa for basketball that I can remember for quite a few years.

Bowen
Filipowski
Dix
Shaw

I don't think he gets much credit for getting a bunch of highly rated kids on campus and whiffing on all of them.

The whiffing on all of them was talking about this year's visitors. He doesn't deserve credit if he gets this talent on campus and doesn't get a signed LOI from any of them.

So you are preemptively bitching about an outcome that hasn’t happened yet.

Would you 2 just start your own forum already.

My gosh.
Concur EIH. They would be smart to put each other on ignore status & stick to their informative posts. Fran brings great stuff to the board & Triangle does some good stuff too, but their bickering & sniping back & forth detracts from their positive contributions. It takes discipline not to fire back at every provocation, but such discipline reflects maturity, self-control & self-confidence - all good qualities. Like a challenge? Try it.

One thing that contemplated during the recruiting process and subsequent signing of my boys, why Iowa Football is known from taking players who aren’t 4/5 star and developing them into pros. Though Fran hasn’t had many “NBA draft picks, he has had a number of them have turned out to be solid pros. I know what football has done has been remarkable, but if we are going to praise Kirk for how he has an eye for talent, we need to do the same for Fran.

Better recruits=Better tournament runs, Better Big 10 records, and more. That’s why we’re excited about this class.

I’m hoping your sons solidify the Iowa-Fran-NBA process so that we have that history to recruit to and that they enjoy that success.

I agree that Fran has had a number of guys go through the program and develop into pros...I am a big supporter of Fran because I think he’s not only a good coach...but he does things the right way and runs a clean program.

Iowa received a lot of attention this season. We're at least "in on" more top flight players than I can remember. Now, we need Fran to be just a little better salesman. We sign 2 or 3 out of state 4*s (or in state but out of state sounds better) we might be back on the basketball map. Follow it up with a nice NCAA invite, maybe another second round game we'll some more attention. Nobody expects much and everyone loves an underdog story, except the CFOs of course.

I have heard many times that hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

Why do we never say "Trust the Assistant Coaches' Eyes for Talent"? I get the head coaches are involved, and may even lead with some recruits, but in most programs the assistants do much of the initial ground work in recruiting.

However, as you rise in organizations as well as levels of sport, you ultimately run into hard working talent!
Yup.
The very best have innate talent AND work hard. No matter how hard some players work, they can hit a genetic ceiling. But it's the ones with at least enough inborn physical qualities who also bust their asses that shine.

Oh didn't you hear? Fran's assistants are said to be too old and can't relate to the younger kids or teach defense.
