If you could look into a crystal ball and see the next 20 years of Hawkeye football, what would you prefer to see?

If those are the only options, then I choose the national title.

If option 3 comes with a few Rose Bowl victories and a playoff appearance or two, which wasn’t indicated, I might choose it instead. But you’re only trading 6 more bad seasons for a national title. I’d still likely go with the title.

2nd option is the most likely to actually happen but would require some improvement from the program.

4th option is just dumb. Picking our two “dumbest from a historical perspective” rivals as the only regular victories wouldn’t matter to our fan base. Our fan base cares a lot more about individual wins like beating Ohio State the way we did last year or back in 2004, or many of the wins against Michigan under Kirk than they cared in cumulative about losing to ISU 5 years in a row at the turn of the century. Yeah those five losses sucked, but I’d easily take those if I got the wins I described above or the 2002, 2004, 2009, and 2015 seasons once in a while.

I would pick the National Title myself, that would be a lifelong memory. To be able to say for one full year that the team I root for was the best would be priceless as a fan.

  1. Win a National Title but have 15 losing seasons -
  2. Win 9 games as an average
  3. Win at least 10 games and 5 conference titles for 11 years but no national and have 9 losing seasons
  4. Beat Iowa State, Nebraska for the next 20 straight but remain average
Polls better with realistic options. #1 is virtually impossible. #3 pretty far-fetched, same with #4.

Yeah, but polling about realistic options wouldn't force you to pick like a gambler.

I never said any of these options were likely, I only asked what you would like to see out of the options. It would be far too easy to answer when the options are either completely positive or negative. Everybody would like to be Alabama, nobody would want to be Rutgers.

College football will just be a club sport in 20 yrs. never being able to become relevant again after the great banking collapse of 2025 and the ensuing great civil war of 2026-2031 that will only be brought to an end with intervention from China. A large part of the West comprising of California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Guam, Somoa, and parts of Nevada and Arizona will have split off into their own nation. Colorado will want to join the new nation, but is cut off by Utah, at which point Colorado will become a territory of the new nation. The new country will be called Libland and their flag will be a marijuana leaf and will have a GDP which is double the remaining U.S. The remaining U.S. will become a tribal mess in disrepair as all the intelligent people and scientist, innovators, etc. will reside in libland. The remaining U.S. will turn to Colosseum 'sports' reminiscent of Rome. Teams of toothless morons with AR15s will tear each other to ribbons for the enjoyment of the tattooed masses and new age gladiators on their Harleys will fight epic battles. With entertainment like that, who needs football.

So......we should just start axing people off now as a pre-emptive strike?

Life is pretty short. You want to look back on that one NC like basketball fans look at the '80 final four team for 15 years? Not me, I'll take the 9 wins every year and twice on Sundays. Makes for some great Big 10 road trips and some Bowl Wins. I just don't care about the NC whatsoever, I just don't. Winning the Big is always 1st and the Rose Bowl is second.

I have told everyone that I just retired and I am seriously thinking about writing a book (story) about this 'take' on the future. I'm not sure I want it to be comedic, but I'm having a hard time not taking it that direction.

That's the great thing about storytelling, there aren't really any boundaries outside of your imagination.

I can see that point of view, Tennessee won a National Title 20 years ago. I wonder how many of their fans think of it as compensation for their recent struggles.

None of the OP options, but I’d take this in a heartbeat:

One National Title and at least three conference titles between now and 2025, followed by 15 years of sub-.500 seasons*

*Caveat that we still beat lil bro every other year.
