In two areas of the game that have been problems in the past several years, the team really shined yesterday:
1. Clock management on TD right before half.
The short drive for a TD that started after the punt block in Maryland's end zone was made possible by outstanding clock management. Just textbook execution of the two minute drill by the staff and players. It allowed Iowa to have a timeout left on third down with the ball inside the 5, which meant they could run the ball, and the result was the Mitchell TD.
2. Recovery of two onside kicks.
Each of the kick recoveries was a great individual effort, with Falconer and Hillyer knowing exactly what they were supposed to do and executing perfectly. On the first one, it looked like Falconer was the only guy on the front line who waited to watch the ball get kicked before running downfield. If he doesn't get that ball, it would've been an easy recovery for Maryland and the rest of the 4th quarter may have been a real nail biter.
Kudos to the staff and players for getting this team to play at such a high level -- more and more, this team's play is looking like the way KF 1.0 and 2.0 teams played. Like many of those teams, I think this one will continue to get better and better throughout November, and will be playing its best ball of the season on December 5 in Indy!
Go Hawks!
