Two things I've noticed in this game.

A lot of the minutes tonight probably had to do with Murray being out and the amount of fouls on other players. But maybe you don't work that into your bitching  How do you have the time to watch Iowa basketball games since so many of you are COACHES?

To Fran’s credit he recognized this and sat JBo. Before anyone states, Fran should know Jordan wouldn’t produce, I say JBo deserves the right to try to produce. Some games he’s unstoppable. Other times, he plays a minor role on offense. The D is where he becomes a giant hole in Iowa’s defensive efforts. As many have stated, if he’s hitting threes, he stays in. If he’s not hitting three’s, he has to sit.
He still shouldn't start, he should come off the bench after the 1st rotation and pulled if he is cold.

Not that difficult to figure out. With Keegan not playing, Painter's only instructions to his team were, 'Blanket Bohannon and let Connor shoot whenever he wants.'
Thats every conference team.

They wrote that scouting report 4 years ago and it hasn't changed.

Can we change the rules so if Connor hits the backboard from three point range that we get to take the ball in from out of bounds.

If he hits the rim he has to sit out for three games.

Bohannon needs to go to Fran and convince him to run more sets to free him up off of screens. That's what his game has to be now, or at least against good competition.
This is an excellent point. Remember a guy named Steve Alford, a scrawny 3-point shooter who starred at a place called Indiana? He was much like JBo in that he wasn't big, wasn't strong, wasn't especially quick or fast, but Indiana always found ways to get him shots. Fran needs to watch those Indiana tapes and run some of the same stuff for Bohannan. Had Iowa been able to get Jordan just five or six shots last night, Iowa probably wins, despite everything else. It's not about JBo; it's about using his talents to best advantage to help this team win. Last night, Iowa failed to do that.

Or..........He stays on the bench, Iowa gets a couple more stops and they win the game.

Purdue's biggest scoring runs were with JBO on the court.

I’m fine with JBo starting. You find out if he’s hot. Perkins should get a lot of minutes. JBo should also be in at the end of games because he has 90%+ in FT%. Kris Murray’s minutes should increase. I thought PMac had his most aggressive game. Nice to have options. Ulis can play and even Josh looks like he belongs. He can’t play extended minutes in a row though. He was gassed!.

How do you tell if JBOs hot if he can't get shots off?

Ideally he would be getting looks in transition or offensive rebounds but he only got 1 good look until the end yesterday.

JBO becomes more valuable if the other players can collapse the D. Tough to do against Purdue.

Surprisingly, the +/- numbers were slightly worse for Perkins last night.

Jbo -13
Perkins -16

other +/- numbers of interest

Rebraca +9
Joe +10
Ulis +4

Ogundele -12

We lost by 7 to the #1 team in the country and had a chance at the end….without our best player and leading scorer in the country on the floor. According to most on here, Iowa should win every game! Last night is almost as good as a win in my book, not sure how our expectations got so high after losing Garza and Weezy. Guaranteed there will be worse games played by us this year, temper the expectations and enjoy the ride!

Find me one person on here that predicted an Iowa win against Purdue?

Last years team has nothing to do with the conversion about this team. Its a completely different team.

Jordan can hit 4 threes to open the game and never score again........but at least he'll give up as many pts in layups on defense, so we got that going for us too.

Why? His early 3 against Virginia was key to us staying in the game if you ask me. He settled the team down in a hostile environment. Start him and find out if he is going to be effective. If he isn’t then pull him like Fran did last night.

That’s the f’n point. Everyone thot we would get r asses kicked last night. We lost by 7, had a chance in the final 2min’s, without our best player. I am ok with that outcome.

There's a place for Bohannon on this team. People need to realize that. He forces teams to defend the perimeter and it helps open up the lane for KM and PM and others to go to the hoop. When you can't play him is when he's a defensive liability against an IVEY or any other top tier guard...unless he's burying threes on the other end...like at Virginia...then you can live with the defensive issues to an extent...but you have to be smart about it.

I think Fran realizes that...and it appeared to me...Jordan didn't play as much in the second half.

Yeah, so is everyone else. That was my fn point.

"Most on here" do not say "Iowa should win every game".

No one said it before or after.

We have better options to play rather than Connor. Fran needs to pull him when he’s jacks a 3

I am not anti-Connor, but I don't get why he won't shoot wide-open mid-range shots. He basically gets left unguarded in situations and opts to whip it out on the perimeter. Having the ball in his hands late in the shot clock is essentially a turnover. It's baffling to me that a kid who showcased a solid offensive game in high school is a complete non-factor in college. Fran needs to find a new role for him where he stays inside the arc and distributes or can shoot his step back.

JBo had 20 points against Virginia. Sure he had a bad game tonight. It's about matchups. He's still one of our most important players.

He'll be very effective getting open against some teams and others he won't. Fran will just have to make the adjustment when JBo is up against someone that locks him down.
Well said. It's up to Fran to figure out game flow and if there is a place for JBo. I just don't have complete confidence that Fran makes good rotational decisions

Spot on. In the past, Fran had limited/no options. This year he has options, but his game management relative to personnel is highly suspect. There were a couple of lineups last night that qualified as "worst possible" IMO.

Fran's utilization of Josh has sucked to be blunt. Why not get him on the floor more in the blowout games so the kid gets some confidence? Credit Josh for balling last night. Once he settled down, the dude was a factor on both ends and hustled his a&& off.

We don't beat Virginia without Bohannon...and about 30 other teams over his career.

We. Don't. Know. This.

you cant just subtract his points and not acknowledge that he COST us points that UVA scored because his defense is weak, especially on their terrific run in the second half, or the 10-0 run (or close to it) that they went on at the end of the first half, and that the shots he took could have been taken by a handful of others.

JBo has a role, and that is spreading the floor and occasionally shooting when the opposing team won't eat him alive as he tries to defend them. We don't need him to pretend he's kyrie irving, driving to the hoop.

JBo and Connor still need to play, just not as much. If JBo is getting abused (like he was by Ivey) and he's cold from 3 or can't get open, its bench time. He can give JT/AU/TP a spell when they need it.

You start him and see how the game progresses and how they defense him. If he can't get open for shots then a move is made. We wouldn't have won the Virginia game without him!

You also can't subtract anyones points and just assume no one else would have scored on those possessions.

Thats not how it works.

Jbo is doing fine but the reality is that the other guards are just better overall players.

Everyone in conference can and mostly does defend him exactly like Purdue unless its a bottom feeder who doesn't have average athletes like NW.

Most of his good looks are dependant on offensive rebounds and transition.

He really doesn't get many good looks in the flow of the half court offense.

Its mostly dribble handoff weaves and ball screens and he just doesn't get many clean looks that way.

The wouldn’t have won without player X premise is a logical fallacy that can not be proven. He definitely had a good game though.

Good call. I do love this team. Hopefully we can find a way to use all our guys at the appropriate times. We're going to need Jordan this season and I'm glad he's a Hawk.

I think Jbo gets a bad rap due to past years. I think he place at least decent defense. I saw him shut of the guard last night several times. Sometimes he gets beat, so did Tousaint.

The game is far different today than it was in the 1980s. 30 second shot clock instead of 45. Can't just pass the ball forever and run guys off screens forever. You have time to run 1 maybe 2 actions, then a shot needs to get up. A player with Alford's same skill set isn't a 2,000 point scorer like he was at Indiana. Not happening.

I like how Iowa is using Bohannon this year. There will be games he makes an impact, like Virginia. There will be others where he doesn't, like Purdue.

Iowa loses a game. Thread about JBo and CMac minutes. Wash, rinse, repeat!
Doesn’t matter if it’s against the #1 team in the country, dammit we should win, and it’s all jbo and cmac’s fault we didn’t! 🙄
