I was watching the Lakers and you know who Tyler cook reminds me of? Julius Randle from Kentucky considering the body type and ball handling skills. Thoughts?

:( I got hollered at for saying that Garza's game reminded me an awfully lot of Kevin McHale. Even though in the exact same post I spent a whole paragraph comparing him to Special K. Now of course it turns out McCaffery mentioned McHale as a STYLE of play that Garza was like. Boy, is he going to get it!

Because some people can't figure out that a comparison doesn't mean two things are exactly the same.

Just trying to say, you might get hollered at. But yeah, I can see the similarity.

I have a feeling that Garza will be the new whipping boy like Woody was because of his athletic ability getting off the floor.

Kid can shoot it and has some serious offense skill though.

Nah, all the greatest complainers have been licking their chops to get after Conner McCaffery. Garza could require a cane to stand up and it'll be anything and everything good or bad they can think of to destroy Fran's kid. This board BETTER be prepared to enforce the rules.

I'm okay with him not being able to jump as long as he makes open lay ups. He would have one up on Woody there.

Fran comparing the kid to McHale was equally as bad. Good lord.

No, no it wasn't. People just tend to really have a problem with understanding comparisons.

When someone asks "who does so and so remind you of?"... no one is going to use some obscure CBB player know one has heard about. It makes much more sense to use a well known player with a similar skill set even if that skill set is significantly advanced. For example, Wadley is strikingly similar to Jamaal Charles, even though he has zero chance of ever being that talented, because they have very similar running styles/body types.

I'm not a "great" complainer, I'm more of a mediocre complainer. I didn't know we were waiting for Connor Mc to come aboard. I'll bet Brady is excited for that.

That very thing has me somewhat concerned. I have never understood the snide comments about certain players not being worthy of scholarships. I can comprehend criticizing the coach for the roster he recruited, but not the players. Looks like Conor is considering trying both baseball and basketball in college, at least for a bit. His ceiling is likely higher in baseball (in terms of playing post-college).

I do hope Conor plays basketball at Iowa. He's 6-5, can pass/shoot/dribble and understands the game. Iowa needs more of that.

If you don't get invites to the official planning sessions, you aren't a "great" complainer. So of course you didn't know their long term plans. :)

Come on Dan! What's the point to this? We are a full year of basketball away from him even being on campus. Let's see how we play this year before we start creating issues on here before there are issues on here. A lot of guards and forwards coming back when he steps on campus. hopefully it's going to be hard for him to see the floor as a freshman.

I'm going to Carver tonight so I'm sure I'll find 2-3 players Cook reminds me of. David1979 is hilarious, I can't wait to see what dumbass comment he'll come up with next.

People get butthurt about stupid things.

I personally find the comparisons to McHale very interesting. Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I don't remember McHale being much of an outsider shooter or "stretch four" as they are commonly called today. I remember McHale being a beast in the post and having excellent footwork, like you could tell he spent hours on fundamentals and techniques alone. I just didn't realize Garza was that type of player.

Great get for Iowa! My thinking is we've just found a clone of Steve Krafcisin!

Well, on the court that is. :) When I did my long evaluation of Garza last June the thing that stood out to me is how he went toe to toe with some of the top prep centers in the country in AAU ball and completely stood his ground. An equalizer, is what comes to mind. Not only that but in some cases he was drawing fouls Ala Aaron White and putting some top names on the bench.

This is a kid that gets the most out of his talent and will be somewhere in the mix of guys like Kevin McHale, Ethan Happ, not saying he'll reach those heights but I think he can. Between Garza and Kreiner the thing that I really like is it may move Cook, Pemsl, Wagner, further from the post and maybe for a change Iowa will be doing the pushing around if we have to.

Welcome, Luka, it's great to have you as a Hawkeye!

There ya go, that's what got me hollered at. "...be somewhere in the mix of guys like Kevin McHale, Ethan Happ, not saying he'll reach those heights but I think he can." That's called a comparison.

And yeah, EZ2BZT, people's butts hurt when they get kicked. We're not all iron a$$es like you. :)

Look at the next several years of in-state recruiting. Weiskamp class of '18, Top 100 recruit, Iowa commit, Pat McCaff, Top 50 recruit, class of '19, Iowa commit, and then Xavier Foster, class of 2020, top 100 recruit or perhaps higher! Hawkeye lean probably at this point, who was he related to again, AJ Blazek (uncle?). Just need a great PG to go with these guys although Fran doesn't tend to recruit traditional PG's outside of MG.

Fran is quietly putting together a very solid roster. It should be fun to watch those Iowa vs MSU battles in a few years. Garza joining Wagner, Cook, Pemsyl, and Kreiner should not only give us the beef, but all of these bigs have a solid set of skills. If Nunge is just a little more aggresive then Utoff was, look out. I see him having that same type of skill set, as Jarred. Time will tell, but those dark years of Lick are getting farther in the rear view mirror.

If a couple of the guys you mentioned have enough skills to survive at the 3 which might happen if Nunge is a Uthoff type, then you could have some combination of Weiskamp, J Bo, Williams & McCafferty in the guard court. If one of the last 3 can play effectively at the point it could be a special group.

Probably should have said them and Wiscy. Teams that just seem to have their way against us in a physical type game. I actually think a lot of it is that we got intimdated mentally by their presense. Hopefully this new group of young bigs will take the fight to these teams.

Special K was a big boy. Had him in the front seat of my VW Rabbit one evening escorting him to a pickup BB game between my Boy Scout Troop made up of mentally handicapped individuals and the staff of Hope Haven Development Center. Also had Kevin Nelson (6' %") now works for the Green Bay Packers in the backseat. Kevin was my neighbor and he and Special K worked at the ISP in Fort Madison. It was an annual affair and the staff always beat Troop 15. They didn't that year. Really enjoyed Steve, a damn nice dude, and like I said, a BIG boy.
