The University of Iowa is temporarily suspending its search for a new vice president for medical affairs (VPMA) and dean of the Carver College of Medicine.
A national search was launched in March and the university invited four candidates to campus in August and September. The campus visits allowed the university and the candidates time to engage and explore the opportunity.
Following the visits, the search committee and university leadership received robust feedback from campus stakeholders regarding the candidates and an offer was extended. Due to family obligations, the selected candidate declined the offer.
“I am sorry that we could not come to an agreement, but we certainly respect the candidate’s decision,” says UI Executive Vice President and Provost Kevin Kregel. “We will re-evaluate the search process and launch it again as soon as possible. We are eager to find candidates who share our exciting vision for the growth of the university’s health care system and for the Carver College of Medicine.”

UI Vice President for Medical Affairs and Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the Carver College of Medicine Dr. Brooks Jackson has agreed to continue serving in the roles until his successor is hired.
In February, Jackson announced that he would return to the faculty following a successful search for his successor.
“I am grateful that Brooks is willing to continue his service to the university, our students, faculty, staff, and patients,” says President Barbara Wilson. “Although it is disappointing to take a pause in our national search, we will use the time to ensure that we are poised to find an exceptional leader for our outstanding health care enterprise.”
Wilson and Kregel will spend the next several weeks meeting with and listening to leadership and other groups within UI Health Care and the Carver College of Medicine before resuming the search. Campus will be notified prior to the search restarting sometime this winter.
