Think about that. The UK basketball team alone makes more NIL money than most entire athletic departments. The team just inked a deal with FTX crypto.

If UofI doesn’t take NIL seriously in all sports, especially football and basketball, we will be left behind. Recruiting is 90% NIL dollars. We need a big donor to get behind these teams so we have a NIL portfolio to tell recruits.https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.on...sketball-nil-ftx-cryptocurrency-exchange/amp/

isn't this really the responsibility of boosters/local businesses and not the school? technically is the school even suppose to be involved in it?

Did I miss it in the article where it said how much Kentucky players are making from NIL? I didn't see it or any reference to their income being larger than all but 8 athletic departments. I call BS.

According to this https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances the 9th largest revenue is Penn State at $165M. With 15 players on the team that would mean each basketball player is now making in excess of $10M per year. Again I call BS. Considering Damien Lillard was making $18M in endorsement income in 2020 I highly doubt that the end of the bench guys at Kentucky are making over $10M.

I guess if these figures are correct CJ would have been stupid not to jump to Kentucky as he went from zero to $10M per year and doesn't even have to play, a bad leg worth $10M sounds like a great deal. Hell Garza and his covid year should have gone with him, he won't make anywhere near $10M total for a good number of years in the NBA, if ever.

Unfortunately the NIL hasn't worked out to equitable for all universities. The blue bloods with the patrons with the deep pockets are raining gifts on their players whereas most schools are more like Iowa with a few crumbs tossed to the kids. This will make it even more lopsided in the future. First you have the NCAA refusing to administer their rules equitably when it comes to the big boys and now you have some schools essentially allowing fans to pay players to come there and play for a year or two. Who is to say they won't eventually start wanting something in return for their largeness. This will have to be addressed or it will kill college sports as we know them.

we have money for amazing facilities but not money for the athletes?

I have to admit it rings a little hollow for me, considering how much Iowa fans love bragging about how much cash the conference brings in for TV money.

It will be very interesting though. It's going to take one crazy fan paying players like a million a year at a really small school to get everybody in on regulation. UK, who got all the best players anyway, I doubt it will change much.

fair enough, either way all players don't deserve the same pay....neither does every employee in a union
Unions aren’t about everyone getting the same pay, they are about collective bargaining and pay equity. Look at the NBA union. There is a huge difference between top earners and salary minimums. And they also have an excellent retirement plan and other safety net benefits.

Really, the only solution for this is for the players to unionize. Spread the wealth equitably.
Yes. I am sure player making a million dollars in NIL is excited about sharing that with a JV cross country runner at Western Michigan.

I know when I worked at McDonalds in college I walked down the hall in the dorms handing out dollar bills to those that didn’t work.

what NIL did was create more “have nots”.

i believe nil has to come from donors/businesses, not the school right?
time for donors to change how they "donate"

you get nothing if you're not a star, you already get your schooly, room, food, etc.

this is to make money off your likeness, what do they need a union for? it's a "solo" deal....

Just talking total NIL money. It was said on a sports radio show by someone who investigated NIL money per school.

You said basketball so if we take the same figures and say only the starting 5 are getting NIL money that means they are making over $30M each, again I call BS. But I guess if it was on the radio, a dying medium, it must be true.

Precisely why it would be absolutely insane for these UK guys to enter into one.

Didn't some clown vow to pay every Michigan St. football and basketball player $500/month? This may be enough to flip a kid who is trying to decide whether to sign with Iowa or MSU. The new "rule" is nuts without any regulation.
