Why don't these guys ever attempt 3's when they're in the game. Do they have low completion percentages or is Fran not allowing them to shoot them? Opponents seem to be taking note and that allows them to sag on our bigs.

Not sure, but at some point they have to become some kind of offensive threat. But, both are freshman and do not want to screw up.

It’s late in the season. If they don’t have confidence with it now, they just need to stick to what they’re comfortable with and go to work in the offseason. Don’t need them to start launching and creating long rebounds with the good teams coming up.

outside shooting is a rhythm shot, and it's hard to have much rhythm after sitting on the bench for 20-30 minutes since warm-ups finished. If they get extended time on the court, they might start letting it fly.

Because they aren't very good at it right now? Give them a summer to work on their shot.

It's a good question. I'm thinking that Fran has asked them to be primarily facilitators with their minutes and to only take their shots when a lane to the basket opens up. That's what appears to be the case anyway.

I’m wondering if Fran has a system whereas some players have the green light, some a yellow and even some a red like in High school . Especially if it’s a type of shot. Layups midrange, step back, three point land. I’d think not but maybe someone knows , Kenyon are you listening? If it’s best you don’t answer that’s also fine. Thanks either way

Iowa generally plays close games. Each possession is important. The question isn't, can they make the shot. The question is can the Hawks get a better one in that possession.

You've got the POY, Joe W, JBo, Nunge getting hot, KM really looking comfortable - even CMac hitting some. If you are a freshman with a wide open 3 with 20 secs on the shot clock, is that the best shot you will get in that possession?

It's a tough call for a freshman when you play 5 minutes in the game.

At this point in their lives, they either can or can't shoot the ball. I assume both can or they wouldn't have been so highly thought of in their home states. But I can't think of either of them actually taking one in B1G play. Other people complain about Iowa playing 4 on 5 when Connor is on the floor, but it would seem that calling for Ulis or Perkins to get more floor time would just exacerbate that situation.

Jump shots tend to be a little more wide open in high school. It takes some time to adjust to the level of defense that is rarely played in high school and/or AAU. Getting used to that alone will help them. Neither Perkins or Ulis can defend anyone past a 2. Connor has the ability to at least defend a little in the post. Them taking time away from Connor is not always that easy of a switch for a team not very deep in bigs.

I’m betting that they feel their role is to facilitate, play defense, rebound, etc.... and shoot when/if needed.

They both have played some meaningful minutes in the Big 10. For the year, Ulis is 0-3 from 3 and Perkins 0-1. It's kind of tough. Even in the blowouts they played in, they weren't jacking up 3's. Which is good. But in the Big 10 games, none of them have been just left alone at the line. It would be interesting to see what would happen if a team decided to just not guard them out there. Ulis is 17-18 on free throws. That is a good sign, as that many times is a leading indicator of 3-point shooting to follow. But that 3-point line in college is quite a bit further than the high school line, so I would expect with another off-season they would improve.

I would believe that would be a good plan with Garza out , Nunge in and an eye out to draw fouls on the opponents key players. JT and the two Frosh are good enough to get to the hoop most of the time and having their key guys sitting is boom for Garza in most cases.

I think this is a good assessment. Plus, maybe Fran telling them to do a particular thing relative to score, minutes remaining, etc. We've seen their abilities in limited minutes, but I gotta tell ya', I'm excited for them next year and beyond.
