Watching Kentucky Louisville game just to see ulis. He's a very very good point guard. Knows when and where to get the ball to the right guys at the right time. Can drive and score and drive and kick out to open guys. I hate him.

He emits a foul and unpleasant odor. I loathe him.

The thing that impressed me the most about Ulis was his control of the ball and tempo at all times. I think he had one turnover against smothering defense by Louisville all game. Pretty amazing.

Agreed, you don't see the godawful turnovers that see at crucial times like you see sometimes with the hawks pgs. He is in control and doesn't get careless with the ball. Man I really do dislike him.

I think Ulis made the right decision for himself. He's better than Clemmons and Gesell, but he'd still be splitting time, and he can now be the man at the top program in the country.

Ulis had a decent game today, but for the year, he is shooting 34% from the field and 26% from the 3-pt line. Gesell gets pounded on this board, but he is shooting 44% from the field and 47% from the 3-pt line for the year.

What were the stats Ulis vs Gesell stats last year? Gesell has an interesting 4 year history of getting his shot swatted, or throwing the ball into back board, getting stripped, or missing FTs in last couple minutes of close ball games. Fran's record in close games says his guys don't play well in close games. When Iowa has a better record in those situations, people will not gripe about how good these guys are at finishing games.

Haven't we won a lot more than we have lost with Mike as the starting PG? Somehow his overall stats are pretty good, but a bunch of Hawkeye fans only seem to remember his bad plays. You would think Gesell shoots 20% with more TOs than assists, reading some of these posts. He has been our starting PG during a resurgence of Iowa BB.

One of the most often posted complaints about Mike is that he has shown no improvement while at Iowa. Well, Mike's stats are up. Ulis' stats are down. Does that mean he is getting worse? Can't Calipari develop players?

Gesell has been a four year starter and, in my estimation, he will be missed next year.

Why is it that some on the forum believe that Kentucky stole Ulis from Iowa? Ulis said in an interview with Scott Dochterman that if he did not go to Kentucky then he was going to Michigan State.

"But how close was Iowa to really landing Ulis? Well, now we know, courtesy of The Gazette's Scott Dochterman, on scene at the Final Four this weekend.

"I really liked Iowa, Coach McCaffery," Ulis said. "I really liked him, guys on the team. But at the end of the day it was between here and Michigan State because I always grew up around Michigan State. I liked (Coach Tom) Izzo. I really wanted to go there, then Kentucky came in, and I just felt like that was the best for me."

So I asked if he would have picked Michigan State over Iowa.

"Most likely," he said".

For what it is worth, and that is very little today, I know I read an article in which he said he WAS going to Iowa if he hadn't got an offer from the Wildcats. Doesn't really matter. You finish second, you finish last.

I posted a link to an article in which he is openly quoted as saying MSU was his destination until Kentucky came calling. When was the last recruit that Fran beat Tom out for?

Guess we will never really know, since the short man went of to the land of rednecks to prove he could play with the best. There were also some reports that Ulis was leaning toward Iowa, when KY got involved.

Do you have a link to that article? Everything I've ever heard it was Michigan State if Kentucky didn't come in

I believe we do know, Ulis was pretty clear with his answer.
I have no inside information on Ulis, but I am positive that there was more than one source indicating that Iowa had passed MSU as his favorite, right before the KY suddenly offered. After the fact, when you have friends closely connected to MSU, are you going to tell everyone that you would have passed on them even if you hadn't chosen KY?

Why in the world would you lie about who would have been your second choice? Because you have friends there doesn't make much sense to lie about it

“Everything changed when Kentucky offered,” Ulis said. “That’s just where my heart was. If they hadn’t have come into the picture I might have ended up at Iowa.”

For Iowa, a kid like Ulis has the potential to be a program changer. For teams like Kentucky and MSU, he is likely a 2nd or 3rd option with equally talented options behind him. Cook, IMO, is our first W in the 'next level' recruiting space. Ideally, Fran needs to land 1 more in this space to compliment Cook. Lots of promise with these kids, but also more risk of transfer if the talent around them is mediocre. I am not saying we need a team of 4 stars, but it would be nice to land a Ulis type PG or SG to the mix.

Ulis is definitely not the 2nd or 3rd option for Kentucky. I like mg but ulis is at another level.

I meant teams like Kentucky and MSU have two recruits ahead of Ulis and 5 recruits behind him that are just as good if they don't land Ulis. We go from Ulis to Trey Dickerson as our Plan B.

Ok I get it and you are right unfortunately. Does it make you as sick as it does me? And Calipari (sp), man, I don't dislike very many people but I find it easy not to like that man.

"Most likely," he said".

It comes down to "might of" or "most likely." It does not matter because he is @ Kentucky. In my opinion, he made the right decision taking the Kentucky offer. The bottom line is when these high rated recruits come in for a visit they look at the roster and the other committed recruits and then decide whether enough talent exists to win championships. Ulis said he liked the players @ Iowa; however, playing on that 2014/15 Kentucky team had to be the experience of a lifetime.

Because this question was asked at the Final Four. Ya know, the same FF that MSU was in. Let's see, answer it by saying the program you were close to growing up and is in the FF also or say Iowa which gains you nothing. The most likely also stands out, he contradicted himself in back to back answers. Either he was going to pick MSU like he said first, or he wasn't. The second answer should've been cut and dry and it wasn't.

What are you gaining saying Michigan State was your second choice when it wasn't?

This.

A pg of his caliber is a game changer for Iowa. At kentucky or duke, he's just another recruit. For the Hawks he could be the difference maker in bringing the program from the up and comer level to having arrived.

It's great that Cook is going to be a Hawk. He is hopefully the first of more top 100 guys to come.
Still, if I could pick one position, I'd take a top 50 point guard.

I hate these threads about players that rejected Iowa. Do other message boards dream wistfully about guys that never went there? Ulis went to Kentucky. He's talented but also a front running punk. Like you said, he could have been awesome at Iowa. At Kentucky, he's just another in a sea of blue chip recruits. Hope to see Kentucky lose every game and slimy as calamari Calapari gets investigated.

Because if you pick KY over MSU, it's all well and good, but if you pick Iowa instead, then you have some some explaining to do?

Just don't buy it. I figure Ulis would've gone to MSU if not KY. Guess I'll have to take Ulis on his word in the above posted article that he would have "most likely" picked MSU.

Not upsetting all of the MSU people that he said he grew up around, oh and why not say you were down to UK and another Final Four team compared to Iowa.

Ironfist...why'd you have to bring delicious squid into it? Otherwise, spot on. Who cares about some little shit heel that made us beg and still TD'd us. His existence is, at best, meaningless to Hawkeye BBall.

That's quite the conspiracy theory. Ulis is a liar and said he would have gone to MSU over Iowa because he thought the people he grew around would be mad at him if he didn't say MSU was his second choice?
