Unemployment rate under 5%!

Pretty sure this is a result of Bush's work. It takes time to see the tangible results of great policy and leadership.

But we're only hiring white people!!!!!!
How 'bout hiring street corner guards in Chicago?!!! They're already armed!!! Win Win :D

New Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that there were 665,000 jobs lost in January, a blunt finding that confuses the heralded report that 151,000 jobs were created in January in non-farm payrolls.

But who got them? The very same BLS finds that jobs to "native born" and immigrant workers dropped. Ditto for men and women.

It is possible that many employees took on a second job, according to analysts. But a difference of 816,000 is too big, one said.

The unemployment rate is not a real number - it currently measures 62% of labor force that is choosing to participate. That rate has fallen substantially during the Obama reign. Or since 2009.

It is curious that everyone talks about the unemployment rate. 38% of the work force is not being counted because they have chosen to not look for jobs. They are still unemployed. The US economy is in awful shape and looking more and more like 1.5% growth or less will be the longer term number.

Do you have any idea if the self employed are counted as employed?

  1. And if your train's on time, you can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
If you ever get annoyed, look at me, I'm self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day

That's not necessarily true: You company doesn't want to pay you retirement, taxes, health insurance so they fire you and a minute later hire you as an independent contractor. You are now self employed. Are you counted in stats for reporting purposes? I don't know. This happened to a ton of people during the Bush Great Recession.

Sad how a just an inkling of good news produces such venomous remarks.

Yay America.
The current climate is horrifying. Literally nothing can happen without the opposing side spinning it negatively. I often wonder if people actually prefer things to go badly and get worse to justify their dislike... or hate. Strange times indeed.

No, with Obama's new illegal settlers having invaded our country and ?looking? for work, that number seems a little low.
What's up with people bolding their posts? Some sort of charity thing running through facebook?

If we could just convince a few hundred thousand people that there is no hope in looking for a job we could drive that number down to 4% in no time!

Worse in an election year. The GOP spins a new term "underemployed" to push the number to around 11%. 4.9% doesn't fit their agenda.

You can bet the farm that the RNC is hoping and praying for a near term recession to tie HRC to Obama. This election cycle has a new emphasis... foreign policy and immigration seem to be bigger issues than the economy by some reports.

I'm starting to agree with some others that believe the Party in power makes little difference. The partisan divide is worse than at any other time since I've followed politics. So much hatred and unwillingness to compromise.

This is good news.

I'm sure that this also means that Welfare participation is also at an all time low.

Right?

Will the GOP give us a number of "underemployed" at the end of 2008? My guess would be 18% perhaps as high as 25%. We burned a lot of jobs the last 6 months of Junior's work. But that fact has conveniently been overlooked.

The one significant item that is conveniently omitted by the GOP is how the 2007/2008 recession forced companies to streamline operations... meaning they discovered ways to maintain production with fewer employees.

When the economy recovered many companies did not increase hiring because they didn't need to. That makes the unemployment rate even more impressive.

Now everyone agrees the U.S. President is not directly tied to the rate, but it becomes a confidence issue, a risk issue, and a sense that Americans become willing to purchase so-called big ticket items which leads to spending increases.

There's a big reason that the Republican debates haven't dealt with economic discussion very much. That reason is 4.9%.
