Fist off - I'm big UNI fan, but man.. disappointing year to say the least.

North Dakota State University won six of 10 matches including a pair of tech falls to defeat the University of Northern Iowa 22-15
Results: 125: No. 17 Josh Rodriguez (NDSU) tech fall Leighton Gual (UNI), TF 17-1, 4:26
133: No. 15 Josh Alber (UNI) pins Nick Colunga (NDSU), 2:05
141: Mitch Bengtson (NDSU) dec. Tyler Willers (UNI), 3-2
149: Clay Ream (NDSU) dec. Adam Perrin (UNI), 12-8
157: Kyle Gliva (NDSU) dec. Zach Witte (UNI), 8-3
165: Taylor Berger (UNI) dec. Grant Nehring (NDSU), 6-3
174: Tyler McNutt (NDSU) dec. Kyle Lux (UNI), 5-2
184: No. 4 Hayden Zillmer (NDSU) tech fall Drew Foster (UNI), TF 23-7, 5:53
197: Cody Krumweide (UNI) sudden victory-1 Logan Paxton (NDSU), SV-1 3-1
285: No. 16 Blaize Cabell (UNI) dec. Ben Tynan (NDSU), 7-4

Notes:
North Dakota State wins for only third time in series history (3-22-1) and first time since 1976-77 season

Looks like the two best wrestlers were out in Peters and Moore. Steirt also not in the line up?

I wonder if Phil Laux thought much about attending UNI instead of returning to Iowa. I'm very glad he's a Hawk, but it looks like he could start at UNI without much trouble and be close to family.

Phil Laux wouldn't start at 125 or 133 at UNI. He would only get on the mat due to injury and that's not at different than his situation would be at Iowa.

That seems a little surprising, based on how their current 125-pounder just got waxed. I wouldn't expect him to start over Alber but figured he'd have a pretty good shot at 125. Maybe not.

UNI's normal starter is former All American Dylan Peters at 125 who was out with injury.

It was already noted that Peters was out at 125.

He got hurt before Christmas. Sat out about a month. He's been wrestling recently but has been favoring his leg.

I'm a big Schwab fan and will root for UNI against anyone but Iowa, but they are not developing talent very well. Maybe Schwab would benefit from bringing in a few new assistants? I know he has good kids waiting in the wings, but so do a lot of schools. It seems injuries keep playing a role in them having a consistent line up too. I don't know who or if they have a S&C coach, but that may play a factor too.

UNI got beat by Iowa State at home this year and Schwab has only been in Cedar Falls for a year fewer than KJ has been in Ames. I would have thought he would be beating them on a more consistent basis by now.

Injuries suck, hoping they turn it around. I like Schwab, and I like what he's doing with this program, tough loss, but season not over. Get some guys back, make some noise against Mizzou in conference tourney.

If they can get healthy they could finish this season strong. They have some young talent red shirting this year so the future is bright. I look for them to compete at a high level next year.

ISU has far, far more resources, a higher profile and more tradition than UNI. The fact that the two programs are on the same level is more of an indictment of ISU than UNI.

UNI has had some terrible luck with injuries.

A lot of hype and excitement at uni but they aren't getting what I would call signature wins still...its about put up or shut up time for uni.

Agree. There was a lot of hype but the results have not been there. There still seems to be a lot of hype! I've had many conversations where people think UNI is the place to be. Maybe it is but they are still consistently behind ISU and a LONG ways behind Iowa. This years junior and senior class were all recruited and trained by the current staff. Fans continue to look to the future. Well, the future is now and it hasn't been getting done. Most fans like the high energy of Schwab and probably aren't as hard on him as they are on Iowa/ISU.

I see they made a coaching change by hiring Roper and moving Thompson to club coach. Is it time to make changes with the other 2 assistant coaches?

Why are they resting so many guys now? I'm sure they have their reasons but 125, 141, 165, 197 all have not wrestled very much. You'd think matches would be good for them. I don't see any of the top programs resting so many guys at the same time. Hopefully it works out for them. They are easy to cheer for but need to start performing.

Moving to next year. They have some top notch young talent (Thomsen, Lujan) redshirting. Steiert and Alber already showing signs of being really good. Combined with healthy Peters and C. Moore. But looks like big holes at 141 (Koethe??), 184(maybe Holshlag moves up) and 197(Bartell ??), plus a true frosh - Isley at HWT.

They have JJ Everard for HWT. He made the NCAAs last year for South Dakota State. Probably not a world beater but should be solid.

And they are "resting" guys that are hurt. Re-watch Peters' match against ISU and tell me why he should be back on the mat anytime soon.

Someone mentioned the hire of this Roper as if it should be a positive. I see it as a negative.

Alber looked great at Midlands! They are pretty solid from a developing talent standpoint.
Not the way I see it but that is only my opinion. Alber has been very inconsistent since Midlands. Moore has as well. Not to mention the other Juniors/Seniors who are on the team. None of them have shown great strides throughout their careers. Let's hope for a tremendous MAC tourney and a load of qualifiers.

Spooner - I didn't say it was a good coaching change. I said it was a coaching change. It's obvious something isn't going the way many wanted/expected. Possibly some new blood on the coaching side would be a good thing?

Cody Caldwell, Levi wolfensberger, Cody Krumwiede, Tanner Hiatt, and Dylan Peters have all gotten worse as their career has gone on at UNI. They've gotten some studs who were tough when they came in, but development has not been a strong point in Cedar Falls.

Add Witte, Bartel, Perrin, Berger, Jensen, Lux, Moore to the list. Maybe not as highly recruited but certainly have not improved at earth shattering rates.

To be fair, many programs are in the same boat. Some coaches do a better job than others.

Which coaches do you think do the best job of developing the athletes they recruit?

Hiatt has had multiple shoulder surgeries and hasn't competed for the last 2 - 2 1/2 years. I think Levi might be in a similar situation but not positive.

Caldwell - had to stop due to injury, he was R12 as a sophomore injured his knee and never came back the same.
Wolfensperger - Injury to the upperbody caused him to leave the team his senior year. He suffered it early on in the year.
Hiatt - dealt with injuries entire career
Peters - Currently dealing with a knee issue
Witte - I know he did have concussion issues one year, but his development never really got anywhere.
Jensen - Currently dealing with an upperbody injury
Moore - elbow injury.

I have no idea on why there have been so many injuries in Cedar Falls, but a ton of their guys that had good potential have just had rotten luck with staying healthy.

If kids aren't able to practice or compete due to injuries, how can one blame the coaches for that? Rough string of luck for Caldwell, Wolf, Hiatt and now Peters.

What could a potential UNI lineup look like next season?
125 Peters SR
133 Alber SO
141 ?
149 Thomsen FR
157 Steiert SO
165 Moore SR
174 Lujan FR
184 ?
197 ?
285 ?

The names listed alone could make a competitive squad, if all healthy. Which seems to be a problem recently with UNI wrestling.

I'm by no means an expert with UNI but I'd guess:
141 will be Jake Koethe (SO) he's got wins over Bleise and Abidin so should be decent
184 could be Tyler Hoffman (SO) who was a JUCO champ last year at Iowa Central and is transferring in next year. Otherwise possible Jacob Hoslchlag (FR) or Adam Drain (SO)
197 likely Jared Bartel (SR) who's been sharing the starting duties this year
285 JJ Everard (SR) transfer from SDSU and former NQ.

If they stay healthy and the freshman are as good as expected they should be a pretty solid dual team and could qualify 8 or 9 (184 and 197 likely the weakest weights but depends on how good Hoffman is) and have a few AAs.

I know injuries happen, but they can't be the most unlucky wrestling team in the country. I would assume coaching plays a part in how they are preparing there bodies.

So I guess you are saying we need Schwab to get a job as an Asst. Coach at PSU???

Pretty spot on, but Hoffman will be Junior. Not 100% sure on the details, but he won the North Central Regional for Iowa Central this past weekend. So when he gets to UNI he will have two years + a redshirt.

Well I stand corrected. Looks like he wrestled a dual at the end of January as his first varsity competition this year. Seems a little weird to pull the shirt this late (at the JUCO level anyway). Assuming he's still going to UNI I'd figure Schwab would have been keep in the loop with that. Wonder if he shirts next year.

Sometimes injuries are freak accidents and sometimes they're not. It's tough to say, but it would be prudent to at least look into if you could be doing things differently. There have been a lot of advancements made recently in some other sports that has had success, but not sure if they are transferable to wrestling or not.

It would certainly give Steiert a year to redshirt but it would be a drop off at the weight. Moore is not as good as Steiert.
