IOWA CITY — A University of Iowa baseball player was arrested early Monday after drunkenly punching a wall at a downtown bar.
Iowa City police were called to DC’s bar, 124 S. Dubuque St., at 12:35 a.m. for a report of an “out of control male” who had punched a hole in a wall.
Officers responded and met with 22-year-old Lucas J. Vandermaten, who was in the alleyway behind the bar. Police said Vandermaten admitted to punching the wall, but said a bartender told him he could do it.
Vandermaten showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking “a lot,” police said. A preliminary breath test showed Vandermaten had a blood alcohol content of .175 percent.
The manager of the bar requested criminal mischief charges for the damage to the wall. Vandermaten was arrested and faces charges of fifth-degree criminal mischief and public intoxication, both simple misdemeanors punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
Vandermaten is a senior right-handed pitcher for the Hawkeyes. In 2015, his first year since transferring from Iowa Central Community College, the Fort Dodge native compiled a 2-0 record with four saves in 22 relief appearances, according to his UI page. His four saves tied for 10th in the Big Ten and his 1.06 ERA is the third best in a single season at Iowa.
Vandermaten is off to a 2-0 start with one save in 2016, but with a 4.19 ERA in 15 appearances.
