The second of four finalists to succeed Brooks Jackson as University of Iowa Health Care’s vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Carver College of Medicine has served as executive dean of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine for three years.

Cristen P. Page’s roots with UNC run deep — having completed all her education, residency and fellowship on the Chapel Hill campus, before taking a position there as assistant professor in 2006.

Page was appointed director of UNC’s family medicine residency program in 2011 and earned tenure in 2017.

She created or founded two programs in 2015 — a Fully Integrated Readiness for Service Training program and Mission3 educational nonprofit.

In 2016, Page stepped in as interim chair of the UNC Department of Family Medicine — and then was appointed to the role permanently in 2017, staying in that position until she was named executive dean in 2019.

In her current role, according to UI, Page supervises a team of vice deans, chairs, and center directors who collaborate on a vision and strategy for the school of medicine. She also sits on the UNC Health Board of Directors and UNC Health Executive Council.

Her research focuses include the rural health workforce and health services, according to UI.

UI Health Care last week announced a search committee has whittled down a pool of applicants for the vice president and dean post to four finalists — who will visit campus over the next two weeks.

The university will publicly release the name of each finalist 24 hours before they’re scheduled to participate in a public forum on campus. Page’s forum is scheduled for noon Thursday in the UI Medical Education Research Facility, 375 Newton Road.

The forum also will be livestreamed via Zoom.

The first named finalist was Sandra L. Wong, professor of surgery and Department of Surgery chair at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and Dartmouth Health.

Wong also is professor of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and boasts a lengthy record as a health services researcher funded by the likes of the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society.

Wong was on the UI campus Monday and Tuesday, participating in her forum Monday.

The last two finalists are scheduled to participate in public forums Aug. 29 and Sept. 1.

Jackson, who announced his plans to resign in February to stay on as a faculty researcher, has committed to remaining in charge until his successor begins.

Once a new vice president and dean is in place, the university will initiate a search for a new CEO of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics — after Suresh Gunasekaran left in February to lead the University of California San Francisco Academic Health System.
