Upset Alert

12 minutes to go and UCLA up by fifteen. I'm just about to give Alford a 50/50 shot of winning this, almost.

KY is not not nearly as dominant as last year. Heard Ulis was doubtful for this game due to injury but still played 38 minutes. That might have had something to do with his going 2/12 from the field and KY's loss. They depend on him much more this year.

Count me in the anti-Alford crowd, but I love that they might beat mighty Kentucky. Just so tired of UK.
Maybe Kentucky will go 39-1 this year :).

Edit: Forgot to add that Ulis injured his elbow (hyper-extended it) a few games back. But that isn't the reason UK got beat. Our big freshman Skal Labissiere is soft like Charmin.

Is my memory wrong or was Connecticut ranked #1 the first game Alford coached Iowa?

Yes, Alford's 1st game at Iowa was an upset win over #1 UCONN. I believe that was at MSG Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. UCONN had won the national championship the season before. Ironically, UCONN was who beat Iowa in the Sweet 16 that year (Tom Davis's last game and the last time Iowa has reached the Sweet 16).

It was all downhill from there...well...mostly...

:)

Thought it was Kentucky we lost too in the sweet 16 match?

The year UCLA came to Carver was like '92 or something. Pretty sure it was Acie Earl and Chris Street-era.
Yes, it was right after Chris Street was killed by the snowplow. First game back @ Carver. It was a big win over UCLA and Don McLean. I was there. AC had a big game...around 29 pts if my memory serves me well.

Completely inaccurate.

Iowa played UCLA at home on 12/22/1990, Chris' freshman season.
The 1st game back after Chris died was against Michigan.
Don Mclean was drafted by the NBA in 1992, Chris died in 1993.

I was at that game against Michigan with the Fab Five. It may have been the loudest I've ever heard Carver. It was a nationally televised game preceding the Super Bowl. Iowa won 88-80, if I remember correctly. I think they would have eventually had to forfeit that game anyway, due to a slight cheating issue.

Your memory is way off. The Super Bowl Sunday game vs Michigan Fab Five was the first game at Carver after Street's passing.
