I am not sure what we do to fill an empty seat but the governor is Republican and the district would likely vote for another Republican.
A vehicle driven by a staff member of Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) crossed the centerline before a crash Wednesday that killed the congresswoman and three other people, according to a revised account released Thursday by the Elkhart County, Ind., Sheriff’s Office.
According to an initial statement released by the sheriff’s office Wednesday, the driver of a Buick LeSabre traveled left of the centerline on State Route 19 and collided head-on with the sport-utility vehicle carrying Walorski and staffers Zachery Potts, 27, and Emma Thomson, 28.
On Thursday, the sheriff’s office said the initial description of the collision was not correct based on “updated information,” including eyewitnesses and video evidence. Additional investigation, it said, determined that the sport-utility vehicle, driven by Potts, “crossed the centerline for reasons that are unknown at this time and the two vehicles collided.”
Besides Walorski and her two staffers, the driver of the LeSabre, Edith Schmucker, 56, also was killed in the crash.
“All occupants of both vehicles were confirmed to have been wearing seat belts and air bags did deploy,” the statement said. “The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to interview witnesses and collect evidence from the scene and vehicles.”

Distracted driving I am guessing. Although there likely is no way to determine for sure why he crossed the center line.
I would think a buggy would have been reported.
Also in my experience the buggies are pretty good about staying to the side of the road, especially on highways like that.
With seatbelts on, probably instant broken neck/spine and major trauma to almost all bodily organs. Possibly still breathing after the accident but bled out before ambulance could get there.
This humans driving cars thing is never going to work out unless we're willing to accept tens of thousands annually killed and millions injured.
