Well sh*t. I kind of thought we were done with this.

https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/s...l-5-worst-deals-coaches-contracts/1334120002/

"The more you examine Ferentz's contract, the worse it looks for Iowa. His base compensation for 2018 is $4.7 million, but it is also riddled with incentives – bonus opportunities that Ferentz should regularly hit, inflating that number.

If the Hawkeyes simply make a bowl game, for example, Ferentz will receive a $100,000 bonus. If they win seven games, his entire staff will receive an automatic 8% raise. And if they win eight, as they have in the first two years of the contract, he'll get an additional $500,000. (Winning seven games or more would also trigger an automatic increase in his buyout clause.)"

So the longest tenured coach in D1 football, with 20 years at the helm of Iowa has a contract that is questionable regarding pay incentives and hitting them? Color me shocked by those that just look at the contrasct compared to the body of work at said school.

Considering the trend of the program and where it is at in year 20, I’ll take the stability of KF and staff compared to a lot of other programs that have replaced their head coach numerous times and w/o an identity.

hahahahhah did u say "USA Today"? LOLOLOLOLOLO. That still around???

Ya, wow, softball contract, playing weak b1g west schedule, easy marks to hit. ;)

Time to apply some a amazon principles and exceed customer/fan expectations and lower da prices. ;)

such an old, tired, and pathetic argument. KF has more Big Ten wins than just about any whoever coached in the league. Has been coaching in a premier conference for 2 decades. Others on the list also have extensive experience at the highest levels.

The over paid list should be the Flecks, Campbells, Frosts, etc....virtually no P5 experience that leveraged big paydays from a year or two of success in tiny conferences going against mostly other inexperienced coaches. There is a reason very few make a jump from a mid major and succeed. It's hard.

Wow. Just an excellent post. Well done.

This is primarily about the inadequacy of the AD in executing his function.

KF's agent did what he was supposed to for his client.

The problem is the guy whose poor job performance has played out in public for several years, including a multi million dollar court case.

Another problem with GB is his thermonuclear effort to lower expectations every time that subject is brought up. A dozen years of his southward efforts and now the most vocal part of the base doesn't even measure success by wins but by waving at a hospital.

I’m way too lazy to do this but it would be far more interesting to compare total costs of a football program; Salaries, buyouts, Costs of acquiring new coaches, staff turnover, legal issues, PR costs, Brand damage control,....

Based on 20 years I’m guessing total costs of KF tenure would be towards the bottom of the Big Ten.

I didn't think Iowa fans would ever turn into entitled Nebraska fans but we have. Makes me sick to listen to the spoiled fan base.

If you look closely Ferentz is a top 10 paid coach with those incentives. He has a 6.5 milllion-ish type of deal and we pay out top 20 assistant money too. I don’t agree with the criticism in this article because Ferentz has long been a good bet for the university - 20 years! The program top to bottom is in excellent shape in regards to talent and coaching. I bet 90% of the starters on this team get drafted eventually, and there are plenty of players on reserve, like Brents, Stone, Epenesa, Golston, Nixon, to name a few, that are highly likely to be drafted too.

There are literally no facts that support this position.

Stupid article and stupid comments in this thread. KF is worth it, he has been for 20 years. People don't get how hard it is to run a clean program and consistently win year in and year out. Every program goes through high's and low's (even OSU, FSU, USC, etc. and they have every advantage you can think of over Iowa). The people who keep bringing this up don't get NCAA college football. Iowa has done it right with KF ... the next coach will be setup nicely as well.

The bar is shockingly low. This is the issue

How does having draftees make the college team better? To me, it screams of his inability to win at a higher level

--------People don't get how hard it is to run a clean program and consistently win year in and year out.

There are plenty of hungrier coaches out there that could win 7-8 games per season given our non conference schedule EVERY year.....and I'm still waiting for us to win that Clean Program National Championship....what a great day that will be for Iowa athletics. D1 athletics is dirty....if you can't face those facts, then don't expect much more than average.....which I haven't for over a decade now.

Let me step out there for a minute and suggest what the alternative could be without paying KF. If Iowa admin did not decide to commit to football when they hired Fry, the future could certainly been completely different. You have had 2 coaches in 40 years and no one in the country has that type of stability and it isn`t even close. You pay KF because you have to. I harp on Iowa being a small market team and they are, but stability has helped overcome that drawback. For the folks that are tired of KF, be careful what you wish for.

It’s kind of odd to me how this article gets written seemingly every year. And usually they are written totally ignorant of the circumstances at each school.

$4.8 million as an annual salary is not as ridiculous when you consider the longevity. The biggest part of the contract that I take issue with is that the buyout that gets guaranteed if he wins 7 games each year. I’d be on board with that if the mark was 9 wins, as 7 is to me the minimum that should be expected each year.

But it’s all a moot point in my opinion anyway because anyone with a brain knew that like it or not, after 12-0 in 2015, Kirk could pretty much name his exit strategy unless the wheels completely fell off.

I think the gist of the article isn't KF's salary as much as it is some of those incentives. $500,000 just for winning eight games? An automatic increase in the buyout for winning seven games?

Kirk has a great agent.

I would love to see all coaching contracts listed by incentive. As stated it’s all a moot point regardless for Kirk imo, but what are the incentives for SEC coaches for example?

I don’t think it’s anywhere near the 5 worst currently. For some reason they just love to bring it up every year.
