Illegal immigration has turned into the number one issue for most people, or at the very least one of the top issues. With that said, I am wondering if the populous has the stomach for the parts that come next. If Trump really is serious about the border and immigration this time around (I think he is), the media is going to go out of its way to sensationalize the hardships of the illegals that are caught in the net so to speak. Almost everyone agrees that the criminals and gang members need to go but then people get a little more squishy when it comes to laborers and families that are here illegal. I can only imagine AOC when they come for someone's abuela and the media onslaught that will follow.

Not that they are exactly the same, but there are some parallels with this situation and Hamas/Israel situation. Israel kind of pussy-footed around with their retaliation in regards to Hamas because I think they were afraid of the blowback through the media. IMO, they had every right to wipe Hamas off the face of the earth but it wouldn't be pretty. The US is in a similar situation with illegal immigrants and how it will be portrayed through the media but a majority of the citizens agree on removing illegals- it just isn't going to be pretty.

Rambling thread but whatever

As you said your thread is rambling so I’m unclear:
  • Do you want the USA to use lethal military force against the peaceful illegal immigrants who are working productively here? I am 100% against this as I imagine most Americans are
  • Do you believe the immigrants are going to become a terrorist organization like Hamas? That seems laughable. It is more likely we see one off terrorists get through the southern border, but nothing like the scope of what Hamas did. And certainly not with the support of speaking folks seeking a better life.

I've said in a few threads that the only practical solution if Trump is actually serious about deporting 10-15 million or more people is creating mass refugee camps like those in Gaza and the West Bank and other parts of the Middle East.

Fun fact - the U.S. entire prison population right now is 1.2 million. So if we are going to round up 10-15 million, you are looking at needing 10+ times the amount of infrastructure of the U.S. prison system.

I just dont see many Americans being in favor of the expense and disruption that would entail.

Sorry op. You can't do thought experiments on a board that has no thought. You also can't draw comparisons with things if they are not EXACTLY the same. You'll waste 3 pages arguing with Joe about what the definition of is is.

LOL!!! Yeah, there is a reason people don't post often on here.

This is the best response of the bunch and got close to the essence of why I posted the thread.

What level of response is appropriate? Everyone has different opinions on that just as they did with Hamas. You saw the political and social push back against Israel once they started their offensive. IMO, they went to light to start and are now realizing they have to go all in.

Are we as a country willing to see the ugliness that will come with implementing Trump's current plan? The media will sensationalize the ugliness 10 fold and the politicians will have to use a large amount of capitol to stay on track.

I didn't post it thinking there is a 100% correct answer to what the US should do and how they should go about it. I do however think the majority of the US wants a drastic change at the border and how we have handled illegal immigration to date.

I think most Americans would be ok with a much stronger border. Basically stop the patient from bleeding. If we used the national guard to secure the border (for instance) I would not oppose that.

Where I think it would go sideways is violence against unarmed refugees seeking asylum or violence against otherwise peaceful illegal immigrants who are contributing productively here already (e.g.the people cutting our lawns and picking our vegetables). I personally believe we need to find streamlined pathways to citizenship for those that are productive and (illegal border crossing aside) law abiding. Anyone here illegally that commits another crime…sure, send them back.

Sigh. I was being facetious. OP was clearly attempting to draw a straight comparison between Hamas and illegal immigrants TODAY.

Have there been any large scale attacks by illegal immigrants recently? No? Got it.
No I wasn't.

I just said there are parallels to the situation as a whole. Mostly societal and political.

I think a concerted effort to find those with criminal records and deal with getting them out of here will be a good thing for all of us.
And I’m thinking that if we can get rid of cartel influence and a lot of the fentanyl product then things will settle down a lot.
