Both of these teams are a lot better than us right now.

I'm my opinion, Jan emphasizes post play too much (understandable with her background).

Our offense needs to find more drive opportunities with more dive cuts by the guards. Too much passing around the perimeter with no action too the hoop.

The lob passes into the post need to die a quick death.

...and our defense is going to need to improve a ton. Still love Stremlow's game.

Agree 💯 with Jensen over doing it on the post play. A large portion of the turnovers are from trying to force the ball into the post and while we are focused on that the offense is doing nothing but standing around. That post whisperer stuff needs to go out the window.

Michigan fell apart in the second half. Put Watkins to the line about ten times, and missed bonked about ten shots of their own off the front of the rim.

Michigan without a starter, however, so some slack given. Another month to prep for USC. That could be ugly if Iowa doesn't show up in a big way.

I don't know if Michigan is a lot better than Iowa. They seem to have problems hanging onto the ball too.

JuJu is GOOD, no doubt about it. Gets to the line A LOT, 13/14 tonight. Some of the calls a little suspect, but she's getting the star whistle now.

After 46 games she sits at 1217 pts, Caitlin was at 1210. So pretty neck-and-neck right now.

It really is hard to evaluate our team at this juncture because they have so many unforced errors. I think we have way above average skill, above average athleticism, and above average defense. But we throw the ball away so much I can’t tell if our offense is below average or it’s just because we are so sloppy.

6 girls had at least 2 TOs & Guyton & McCabe only had 1 but they were 2 absolutely ridiculous passes that you have to question why they were even thrown.

At some point you kind of have to accept what we are, and by that I mean the turnovers. I mean we're still a NCAA tournament team, last I saw we were a 6. We've had 4 years of CC handling the ball 90% of the time ( maybe more) and the rest of the girls being complimentary players. So now all the complimentary players are having to do more than they've ever done. Lucy has stepped in pretty nicely but she's not quite as strong handling the ball as I thought she might be. And that's not a knock on her but again we've watched possibly the greatest pt guard to ever play for 4 years. I think this is kind of who we are. Some good pieces, great home court advantage, above average talent and can win a game or possibly 2 in the tournament.

JuJu is so strong and great at drawing contact. Pretty much every foul she draws is legit. She's 6-2 and strong.

Absolutely she is silky smooth, in fact, she is so smooth you don’t even look at her and say wow what a great athlete. You just look at her and say holy smokes, it looks like she’s gliding. I’ll make a prediction. She will probably average more than Caitlin her first year in the league….somewhere above 20+ & probably around seven or eight rebounds.

She won’t impact the game in the same way though. Of course it all depends on what team she goes to as well.

PB on the other hand, I think she’ll average around 12-15 points a game and two or three assist. Be a very good professional, but she’ll be over shadowed by a lot of players already in the league and coming up behind her.

Hopefully Guyton will be that person who brings the ball up the majority of the time. She has mad potential at PG. just needs the minutes and I think she will continue to climb those minutes as the conference schedule swings into high gear. Streamlow has shown she can be a good ball handler as well.
I’m very encouraged by Ava Heiden. She is improving game to game and by the end of the year she is gonna be a problem for opposing defenses

Love Lucy's offensive game and persona.

Her defense stinks.

She is all of that and I did say a "few" of the calls were suspect. A couple times it seemed the defender had her hands straight up and JuJu spun into her chest and threw up an off balance air ball. It does take strength to muscle through contact but I'm always looking at who created it?

Otoh I realize the game nowadays is often played that way. And again, I'm not saying JuJu's game resembles "bully-ball" or anything like that. She's too smooth for that.

Good post.

Geno famously said Caitlin "Wasn't built for this league." I mean look around, Geno. PB appears frail by comparison to Caitlin. PB weighs about 140 lbs while Caitlin is around 152, and maybe more since she started training.

JuJu, otoh, is of course ready-built for the W.

Definitely need to drive to the basket much more often, especially against man-to-man defenses. Agree, way too many lob passes into the post, the majority of which result in a turnover. Finally, Jan needs to draw up more offensive sets to free up Taylor McCabe for 3-point opportunities.

Absolutely. And I think you saw it early as CC was getting the crap kicked out of her and then the break came and she got a rest and the rest as we know was history. She definitely looks like she's put on more muscle. Paige in my opinion is really going to struggle w/the physicality of the W.

Yes, I saw a picture of her today and I don’t know why I’ve never noticed it, but she is remarkably thin!

I don't doubt PB will do well in the W. I do very much wonder if her knees will hold up. Great start perhaps, but a short career. All guesses at this point.

Watkins is probably going to light the Hawkeyes up. Not sure who can stop her, and there are too many good players to defend. She absolutely got calls last night. Hardly touched and going to the line. Just the way the game was being called. Wonder if Swords would have helped Michigan keep it close.

Michigan has a good young team. I swear I thought their coach was going to quit last year every time Clark/Iowa played UM. She had no answers and seemed overwhelmed. Probably the way many coaches were, but she wasn't ashamed to admit it. So, interesting to think Michigan would start over this year with a young squad and look pretty good.

She missed shots on a number of good opportunities vs Purdue.

If I were recruiting I would want all to be drivers first- good things can happen/ a made, a dish, a foul, a kick out. McCabe is Gabby - never ever drives, Kylie rarely drives,

Yeah unrelated, though I don’t believe she’ll be guarded the same way because it’s not going to be necessary
Absolutely not. Also because she can’t pull up from 28 feet like CC can. But she’s skinny and she’s going to take a beating. I’m not saying cheap shots just saying she’s pretty frail.

Kylie's best basketball is still ahead of her. She has a ton of athleticism, just needs more experience.
Kylie is a 5th year senior. When is her best basketball going to start? I doubt she will play next year, at least not at Iowa.
I've seen enoughof her. She is a max 10 minute off the bench player. Let Guyton, Stremlow or Magleni have her minutes.
Like Jada, great teammate, limited impact on her games.

We look so bad when our starters are in. They all don't move and hold onto the ball too long before passing and then telegraph the pass. No leader. Lucy needs to take over if she wants to.

Fortunately you aren’t the coach. We heard this all last year with Gabbie. She hasn’t played enough to ever max out her potential and she makes a huge impact on the game.

Honestly you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don’t see her losing her starting job. I do think the other girls will continue to get more and more minutes, but she is most assuredly a very important part of the team.

She started the year 5 of 26 from three-point range and went o-fer, four games in a row. She’s 15 of 40 since. I anticipate her getting better throughout the year. She’s also 6ft, extremely athletic & our best defender by a stretch.

It’s my opinion you’re seeing what you want to see🤷‍♂️

Paige has one advantage...she was an early adopter of the white privilege narrative. Her initiation into the W will be greatly relaxed.
That, but Paige is also a member of the blue blooded Geno/Dawn sorority. They look down their nose at Iowa outsiders like they were Mohammed, Jugdish, Sydney, and Clayton. Unaccepted.

Stop with this. It’s old and stale. CC never let it bother her and just played her ass off. Let it go.

Very interested in UM vs UCLA tomorrow if Syla Swords plays. She is fantastic and had she played vs USC they may not have run out of steam.
