The Memphis Grizzlies announced today that the team signed forward Jarrod Uthoff. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. In addition, the team waived guard Ahmad Caver.

What's going on in that front office? Sign a guy then waive him the next day. What was the point of that?

Ya and he had the fewest minutes played last night, you'd think they'd do some research to Uthoffs abilities before signing him. Just a big waste of time, hope Jarrod's head is on right. That would be demoralizing.

It's really hard to crack an NBA roster when you have:

* Only 30 teams, 15 roster spots/team, 450 total jobs

* Foreign players taking many of those 450 jobs

* Players in their 30's not retiring any time soon
because of the millions of dollars in salary involved

* Only 1st round draft picks get guaranteed contracts and guaranteed money; if you are picked in the 2nd round, there are no guarantees

* With most NBA rosters, you will see only one rookie on the roster and that is the team's 1st round draft pick. It is hard for players like Uthoff and Marble (who have bounced around for a few years) and Cook (a rookie) to land somewhere as a result.

This is why Ahmad Wagner made the right move to play football. He actually has a good chance to be drafted by an NFL team next year. Honestly, I'm surprised a lot more basketball guys like Wagner don't play football because there are so many more spots in the NFL available. If a guy isn't ranked in the top 20 of his class he's probably not going to make the NBA ... ever. I'm so surprised by how many college freshmen think they're eventually going to make it to the NBA. Like you said, there are thirty slots per year and about a third of those slots go to foreign players. So, 20 guys each year have a chance and most of them are freshman or sophomores. If you're not projected as a first round pick by your sophomore year, just stay in school, get your degree, then go to Europe for a few years to make some money and experience the world before "settling" for a regular job--or becoming an entrepreneur.

EDIT: On that level, I'm surprised Connor McCaffery hasn't chosen to dedicate himself full time to playing baseball.
