Sounds weird to say it with 16 Pts but he has cooled recently from the outside. He still has so many other ways to score though, hope he heats up from the outside again though.

He's just a little sloppy right now. Needs to work harder at getting square on his step back and post jumpers, and needs to really focus on the follow through from the arc. He's playing well and doing a LOT of good things especially on the boards and defensively and with his passing. He and Woodbury have a great connection right now.
I think uthoff will be fine and he's due to have a little step out game Thursday. I don't know who on Indiana can guard him.

Absolutely right. JU is clearly in a shooting slump. Sure, he got his 18 or so again today, but his shot is off. The little fade from the side of the lane almost never drops any more. And he's missing lots of open threes. Thursday would be a pretty good time to get back on track.

When he does, with Jok in a groove, look out.

I don't know recall if he was hitting that fade away earlier in the year, but he sure hasn't been hitting it lately.

Not a bad game for Uthoff to have an off-shooting day. Still playing hard on the boards and on defense. Hawks will need to be shooting better Thursday.

Lol agreed on everyone's comments, felt almost bad posting that after going for 18 and 12.

Uthoff epitomizes the high expectations this team has earned. Today felt like an off day for Uthoff and the team in general - but if you would have told me at the beginning of the season that we'd beat Illinois by 12 on the road, I would have been ecstatic.

This is truly a great team.

It wasn't just this game, it's been the last several games, since Maryland. To his credit, JU is still playing good D, rebounding, and passing. All I'm saying is his shot is clearly not as deadly as it was earlier in the year. As another poster said, JU's shot looks "tired." Almost every miss is well short, and his mechanics are off...another give-away that he's tired.

If I were Fran I'd give the starters PLENTY of rest this week. I'd l tell them none of them is to go near the practice gym until further notice. The starters need rest more than they need anything else. They know what they have to do, but they need fresh legs--and fresh minds--to do it.

Let JU work on his shooting mechanics a bit and send him home. Same with the other starters. Work on a few personal issues, but mainly just rest.

The Hawkeyes need to head into Bloomington well-rested so they can take it to the Hoosiers for 40 minutes. Then it's really on, and there's nothing Maryland--or anyone else--will be able to do about it.

You can tell teams are really focusing on him lately. A lot more double teams and putting their best D player on him.

It's really opened up Jok though :D
I also think it's opened up Woodbury on the offensive glass. Especially when Uthoff is the one shooting. Bringing out their 4 and then with all the attention on Uthoff, it leaves a one on one box out against Woody and he's been winning those battles lately. If Indiana plays the same way I think Woodbury will be a factor again on the offensive boards.

Actually, I feel right now his overall game is really, really good. Blocking shots, key rebounds, he seems to be in the right place all the time. For a few weeks his shooting was out of this world. The last few games it's cooled off. But even with more down-to-earth shooting he is a helluva player.

This thread makes me feel really good about our chances. Remember when we needed 30 out of Matt Gatens for any hope of victory?

Let's hope he catches fire at the right time. Like right around the beginning of March.

you cannot keep up the pace he was going at forever. All players have down games or slumps in all sports.

Might as well complain about the weather.

It's B1G basketball. There's a reason I've wanted them to involve Woody more inside and attack the rim more. There's not a single team or player (maybe sans Hield) that can shoot well from 3 every time out or sustain it throughout the course of the season. Michigan can't throw it in the ocean, Yogi is in a slump, etc. Tired legs happen. I'm hoping they can find a way to get through the next three games and get a week's rest before the stretch run.

To me, Uthoff simply settled for too many poor shots again yesterday. He took multiple threes well behind the line and rushed some tough fade away's. Those aren't high percentage for anyone. He has the ability to beat his guy off the dribble with his length so I hope he continues to utilize that more. Him and Woodbury have some really nice chemistry going on right now. I think that screen and roll could be there 5+ times per game..

I don't think he's riding his fadeawsys or step backs. He's not getting square and the ball is drifting. It's an easy fix. Just gotta focus in getting the shoulders and footwork squared up.
As far as from the perimeter, his release has gotten a lot quicker this year but one thing that can get sacrificed for the speed of release is that good follow thru. I think that's all it is honestly. He got good looks yesterday, almost too good a couple of times that it stunned him.
I think he'll be just fine.

Agree with holic here....lot's of players have tired legs at this point. And correct me if I am wrong Dan53 but I believe you said Jarrod is nursing a sore hammy and ankle too...ouch. The team does have a week off after the game at PSU before the home game with Wisky so that's good. They will need it.

And not to belittle any game left for the Hawks because they are all important but unlike other teams like IU and others, for Iowa the strength of BIG teams left to play is a bit of relief in comparison to the amount of energy and PT starters and key subs are going to have to log to get to the end of the season. And then to jump into the BT Tourny.

His shot and game are fine. Teams are playing him differently. Early in the season opposing 4's or bigs just wouldn't get out on him far enough and he would just knock in 3's like a cold assassin. The message is out, he's being played differently. Crowd him and make him put the ball on the floor. I was actually encouraged against Illinois that he found more ways to score on drives, rebounds and post-ups. Probably needs to look to pass the ball more out of the post but those are small nits to pick.

Maryland had a collection of tall, athletic guys like few other teams have. Illinois had Hill, who didn't let him have space. But Uthoff got him in foul trouble and still managed to get points. Indiana will likely try Troy Williams or OG Anunoby, or both. Another chance for Uthoff to do some damage inside the paint. I like that he's started to pick up more assists when putting the ball on the floor. He's making others better with all the attention he's getting.

Jarrod has gotten a little sloppy with his footwork on some of his shots, and maybe it is just the grind of playing against high-level competition. He almost looks like he is deciding whether to take the shot, instead of going up without hesitation. As well as he has been playing on both ends of the court, he is still playing great basketball.

I agree with the comments about the high/low that Iowa has worked between Jarrod and Woody a few times recently. With all of the concern about Jarrod, Woody can pick and roll to the basket to get some easy shots, if clear the area around the basket.

I would say his recent sloppiness is most apparent on his shot selection. He's often shooting when he's got a guy in his face...as a fade away, from well beyond the 3 point arc. Those are a very low percentage shot and most coaches would ream a kid for shooting those shots rather than driving or passing the ball off. I know Ute has the green light to shoot, but he's gotta be a little smarter about it. There are plenty of guys on the floor who can score. If you're not open, pass the rock, don't put up a fade away three from half court.
