Very surprising...I noticed you're 99th in the country in rushing....

I would have expected more from a typical Iowa team. Is it the skill set at RB? Is your OL not up to par, or is it the schemes you run now? We typically don't give up a lot of yards on the ground, so it sure appears to beat us you will need to air it out?

Yup, but depending who you talk to, the running came is close!
Close to what is anybody's guess.

Last year Iowa had 2-1,000 yard rushers and finished 53rd, this year they are way down but the pace of the Iowa offense will never make them a top ranked offense in any category

According to the coaches the Hawks are actually really good at running the ball. It's just that we do not "execute" well on about 35 of our 60 plays per game. You couldn't possibly understand though because you are not a coach.

We lost our 2 starting senior tackles. So yes, the Freshman replacements have had trouble with execution. Makes running the ball a bit tough.

Of course, we didn't light the world on fire early in the year either. But Iowa's running game should be better. Part of it is also Akrum Wadley needs a "thunder" back so he can be lightning. And while Iowa might in fact have one in James Butler (who got hurt) and Toren Young (who never plays) we mostly don't even try anything but running Wadley. This is also the first Iowa OL I can recall in a long time that seemingly pass blocks better than they run block.

All of that said, OSU is a world above anybody we've played in terms of their defense's talent level. This one could get really ugly because OSU can forget about the run threat and just go after Stanley all day.

Injuries to both tackles hurts. Add to that the fact that a blind kid in Russia would know when and where we're we're going with the ball on any given play and there you have it.

We've been laying in the weeds. We're about to unleash a running attack the likes of which you have never seen!

My God some of you are total hypocrites, wasn't it just last year there were countless posts and threads bitching about how Wadley doesn't get enough carries and that he should be the only one doing so? Now people are complaining that it's only him.

To answer the OP's question, and whether people want to admit it or not, our O-Line isn't the same as it used to be, but at least they are improving. I would give a small acknowledgement to the fact that Brian F still wants to call some plays between the tackles and are giving those carries to Wadley instead of a bigger back.

Thanks for all the answers....no matter how STATISTICALLY it appears we have a decided edge, we are on the road, following a huge emotional game, and are playing a team that typically is always ready for us. I expect a closer game than many do....and one other point, I think your new "wave" tradition is maybe the coolest thing I have ever seen, and certainly points to what is REALLY important in life. Hope to have a great game and no injuries on either side!!

Classy post Brut. We typically get the exact opposite from the Nebraska posters here.

I think one reason behind the low yardage is that we try to win against better teams by slowing the pace way down so it becomes more of a strength and conditioning battle. We try to focus on wearing out the other team physically to erase the talent gap and have been doing that for years. Sometimes it works.

Pay attention to the trenches Saturday cause it's going to be a real meatgrinder. It'll give you something to do when the pace slows way down. The game will probably flow differently than what your used to.

Thanks Brut. We will have to be perfect and that might not be enough. The old adage of "Iowa isn't going to surprise you with anything" is true and this year, we simply don't do at as well as some years. Couple that with the fact that we're breaking in a new OC (who I still like A LOT better than GDGD) and it adds up to some highs and lows.

We run it on the first 2 downs(and every opponent knows this). Our O Line gets no push and opens no holes - so now we are third and long - and then we either run it a third time - or we throw the bomb. Rinse and Repeat.....:(

This

But in two years, this is also going to make these two tackles total studs.

Unless they get hurt like Boettger and Myers have. Or Drew Ott. Or any number of other good players who got injured when they were playing their best football. Iowa needs depth, depth, depth. The really good teams can handle losses because their backups would probably be starters at Iowa. Iowa is an utterly mediocre team and extremely predictable.

Always ready for you? Ohio State demolishes Iowa historically. The worst winning percentage against any team in the B10 is Iowa. And it has never really mattered whether it was at home or on the road. Ohio State just wins. Although, I was at the 2004 game when Drew Tate throttled Ohio State. That was the most satisfying Hawkeye game I have ever seen live. The Orange Bowl win was the best I've seen overall.

Ferentz is 1-8 against Ohio State which may actually be a lower winning percentage than Iowa's historical record against OSU.

Iowa's longest winning streak over Ohio State is 2 games. It happened once in college football history: 1922 and 1923. In the 1950s the series was fairly even, but that was the heyday of Iowa football. Fry grabbed three or four wins--which is impressive, really. Ferentz had one win (2004) thanks to a rare off year by Ohio State, a nasty defense, and a fiery QB the likes of which Iowa rarely sees any more. There is no hope.

Most of the posters in this thread must sit within earshot of me. Do not understand why you invest a morsel of energy into something you hate that much. Play frisbee golf with all the other non-athletic hacks.

Wadley is not the problem. The OL is and it's a damn big one. Couple that with a sub par passing attack AND extremely questionable play calling and you get what we have.

In spite of my pessimism, I would love to go to this game. I would be cheering as crazily as I could for the Hawks. I just can't make it to this one. You should want me to be there! Unless you're a Buckeye fan then, yeah, you should hope I stay at home. The last Ohio State game that I attended was that blowout in 2004. Haven't gotten to be at an Ohio State game since. So maybe my absence is the problem. lol
