I am hoping to post video from the Grand View Open in this thread. I'll Start with Carter Happel's first collegiate win:
He still certainly has things to work on. It's always hard to tell exactly what the freshman will look like in their first college matches. Way too early to draw any definitive conclusions. I remember this board overreacting about Kemerer getting taken down by some nobody at this tournament last year. They just posted the AM video, I'm sure it'll be here shortly.
Here's my professional overreaction from one single match...
I'm not sure he's ready to pull the shirt. There were a lot of shots that he wasn't able to finish on a guy who's not going to be anywhere near the podium. I realize he ended up horsing him over, but you don't turn regular D1 starters with 3/4 nelsons.
I've made mention before that he kind of reminds me of Nick Moore in his straight forward, pass the elbow type of offense. I'm not sure if he'll have the same quickness issues that Moore had, but it'll be something to watch in my opinion. I know we hear the practice stories of him beating on everyone, so obviously I don't know what I'm talking about, and clearly hope he's the guy we all want him to be.
Don't doubt what you say at all. There is a huge difference between high school and college. Hope he can develop more than some of our upper middleweights in the recent past. Hopefully the Nick Moore comparison proves wrong. They just posted the AM video, I'm sure it'll be here shortly.

Fainting would be nice.Dominated and pinned an easy guy in the second period using a variety of moves and techniques. AM rode the guy in the first period which is not his usual M.O. so it was obvious they were working on things. As for the nelson, guys get pinned with basic moves all the time. He pushes on the head like he's going to let him up, the guy relaxes and he hits him with it...kind of like some guys with the cowcatcher. I guess I don't know what some people would want other than the guy fainting at the site of AM.

I am not saying he did anything that proved he for sure needs his shirt pulled tomorrow, but he certainly didn't do anything to write it off. He majored and pinned 2 D1 wrestlers and beat the #1 & #5 NAIA guys by 9-3 without giving up an offensive point all day.
Common theme from these videos is all the freshmen were attacking at all times!!!!!!
Hope you're right but Yates just looked better to me at this point.
Agreed. Yates looked bigger and I was surprised to see Wagner at 133 and not 125.I know Yates is listed as a 125, but I wonder if he doesn't end up at 133 at some point. Wagner looks like a career 125. I would also add Yates was rated better than Wagner and Rathbun out of high school so seeing him ahead of both wouldn't be surprising.

. . . and keep his shoelaces up, and keep his head up in every scramble. . .He needs to "bring his hips to the party."![]()
Anything is possible but I'm not seeing it. Wagner got out of numerous attempts where he was definitely in more trouble than Yates ever was.The score was closer than the actual match was, IMO.I think Wagner wins that rematch. Slow start with no confidence. Really poured it on after first TD.
Thanks for posting these.
Standing about 15 feet above the mat (on the walkway overlooking the gym), that's how it looked to me, too. Wags hung tough, but he spent most of the match scrambling out of Yates' scoring attempts. He'll need to step up his game a good bit to get the upper hand in that match-up.Anything is possible but I'm not seeing it.
