Video from Grand View Open

3 thoughts:
1. Moody had to shave his head last year and this guy got to wear that hair?
2. I liked how carter was trying different things on top. I feel a lot of our guys just try the same thing over and over in a match on top and he was going with the flow of the match and hitting what was there.
3. A little bit of a face mush at the end. Gonna be a great hawk!:D

IAWrestle just building the suspense...they know the videos we want to see!

I saw they posted the video on Twitter, check Iawrestle website, it's probably up on there. Marinelli looked methodical, and dominant. Showed some slick SPG signature movies that I've seen Zeke Jordan hit a number of times.

They just posted the AM video, I'm sure it'll be here shortly.

Here's my professional overreaction from one single match...

I'm not sure he's ready to pull the shirt. There were a lot of shots that he wasn't able to finish on a guy who's not going to be anywhere near the podium. I realize he ended up horsing him over, but you don't turn regular D1 starters with 3/4 nelsons.

I've made mention before that he kind of reminds me of Nick Moore in his straight forward, pass the elbow type of offense. I'm not sure if he'll have the same quickness issues that Moore had, but it'll be something to watch in my opinion. I know we hear the practice stories of him beating on everyone, so obviously I don't know what I'm talking about, and clearly hope he's the guy we all want him to be.

He still certainly has things to work on. It's always hard to tell exactly what the freshman will look like in their first college matches. Way too early to draw any definitive conclusions. I remember this board overreacting about Kemerer getting taken down by some nobody at this tournament last year.

Don't doubt what you say at all. There is a huge difference between high school and college. Hope he can develop more than some of our upper middleweights in the recent past. Hopefully the Nick Moore comparison proves wrong.

Dominated and pinned an easy guy in the second period using a variety of moves and techniques. AM rode the guy in the first period which is not his usual M.O. so it was obvious they were working on things. As for the nelson, guys get pinned with basic moves all the time. He pushes on the head like he's going to let him up, the guy relaxes and he hits him with it...kind of like some guys with the cowcatcher. I guess I don't know what some people would want other than the guy fainting at the site of AM.

Fainting would be nice.

I am not saying he did anything that proved he for sure needs his shirt pulled tomorrow, but he certainly didn't do anything to write it off. He majored and pinned 2 D1 wrestlers and beat the #1 & #5 NAIA guys by 9-3 without giving up an offensive point all day.

Also, I would like to see those matches against the NAIA guys to see how much riding time he got. If there is one major flaw in Alex's "game," it would be his ability to ride in college. I would be curious to see how much riding time he got in those last two matches.

What IS going to be interesting with AM is two things:

1. Can he get away on bottom?
Obviously, this is most true freshman, but the Big Ten comes with a lot of elite riders. I'm not too worried about him on top, because he is such an offensive force. Which leads me to my second point.

2. Will he be able to generate offense once the "word" is out?
Marinelli is incredibly reliant on forward pressure from his opponent. He has no penetration step. Has an unbelievable level change on both his Left-Hand post double and Left-hand cross-post single. But neither travel distance, which is why you saw Paulson peel a couple of those shots off.

I would bet Tom/Terry/M* get him to pick up his handfight, but, right now, if you don't post AND push, he has a hard time generating his offense.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the 3/4 Nelson. It's no different than the cowcatcher/brands/ramos - He's really only going to attempt it with the score out of reach/broke the guy/feels it in the pace.

Common theme from these videos is all the freshmen were attacking at all times!!!!!!

I love it! Attack! Score points! Malcom reminds me of a young TnT. Not so much the specific techniques, but the style- reckless abandon! Put fear in the opponents! Take it to a level they can't understand! We need more of that. Obviously some things to polish, and could be difficult to get into the lineup in the next couple years, but I'm excited to see how he develops.

I think Wagner wins that rematch. Slow start with no confidence. Really poured it on after first TD.

Thanks for posting these.

Hope you're right but Yates just looked better to me at this point.

I know Yates is listed as a 125, but I wonder if he doesn't end up at 133 at some point. Wagner looks like a career 125. I would also add Yates was rated better than Wagner and Rathbun out of high school so seeing him ahead of both wouldn't be surprising.

Agreed. Yates looked bigger and I was surprised to see Wagner at 133 and not 125.

Anything is possible but I'm not seeing it. Wagner got out of numerous attempts where he was definitely in more trouble than Yates ever was.The score was closer than the actual match was, IMO.

Standing about 15 feet above the mat (on the walkway overlooking the gym), that's how it looked to me, too. Wags hung tough, but he spent most of the match scrambling out of Yates' scoring attempts. He'll need to step up his game a good bit to get the upper hand in that match-up.
