But please, let's have more guns. And for those unfamiliar, here's what the Second Amendment says: "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the maintenance of a free state, the people's right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Many people are oblivious to that conditional statement (in bold type) that introduces the amendment. But it's there. Always has been. As a result, it's clear there is no right for individuals to keep and bear arms in this country . . . unless you're a member of a "well-regulated militia" like the National Guard, not the Proud Boys.

No other country in the known universe is victimized by gun violence anywhere near the level we are in the United States, and Iowa is a significant part of the problem.

Keep your thoughts and prayers and, instead, support reasonable gun control measures. Then we might be able to go a week or two without a Sandy Hook or an Uvalde or a University of Virginia tragedy.

Lots of falsehoods to address here. You can have an opinion on guns but let’s not support it with misinformation.

First. the well regulated militia bit. This has long been known, and meant at the time, to be a ‘trained’ (regulated) citizenry. The does not mean National Guard. There was no National Guard. Read more.

Second. The United States doesn’t even break the top ten in firearm deaths per capita. And overall firearm deaths we are second to Brazil. So your ‘nowhere near’ is another untruth. We are also second in firearm deaths from suicide which undoubtedly plays into the overall deaths total in a significant way.

Third. The weapon in these shooting was a handgun. What proposals do you have to address this? Outright weapons confiscation, a moratorium or a manufacture ban?

Forth. Sandy Hook was in 2012. Uvalde in May 2022. This isn’t every two weeks. Far too often to be sure but the hyperbole is strong in you.

I think it’s just better to argue facts and then form opinions and engage in debate don’t you?

Now before you make assumptions about my position, I’d would be for the following

Full background checks and a 7 day waiting period unless evidence of an emergency can be provided. (Proven threat to family, self etc like a recently issued restraining order etc )

Red flag laws where medical providers can divulge (free of HIPAA rules) threats to self or others. You’d get a day in court to argue for yourself however. This can’t be a confiscate then go in front of a judge to argue to get them back. You’d get due process prior. Whatever money it costs we should bear as a country. Expired hearings etc. maybe even a separate process. The current court process isn’t fast enough to address threats in a reasonable way without rights violations. The idea that we should first confiscate the have a hearing cannot be justified by claiming to process is too slow. Speed the process then.

Firearms with capacity for over 10 rounds (or so) require age of 21.

Guns are to be painted any color but black and they should be short. Long black guns are scary (I’m kidding of course in this one).

The idea that gun owners(myself included) can’t be asked to follow some rules is absurd. My right to have a gun isn’t infringed by a waiting period background checks or red flag laws. If I want an AR15 weapon I can wait for it and I can undergo a background check. On the other hand, the idea that the second amendment is anything but what it is is also absurd. In this country we are allowed to have guns if one is law abiding and no threat to others. And no, it doesn’t have to be for hunting. I should be able to go out on my property and shoot the shit out of an old car or a bunch of oranges or whatever the hell I want.

A former Whisky player who portaled to UVA was one of the victims - Devin Chandler.
Very sad news for the Badger family. Jim Leonhard spoke about him at his presser today and they altered practice yesterday because of this news. Devin seemed to be someone really liked by everyone in Madison.

It's also been one hell of a year of adversity in Madison too-- this news from yesterday being the latest.
