I think it makes it fun. However, consider this:

Their are only 68 spots for the NCAA Tournament.

32 schools currently get into the NCAA Tournament no matter what by simply winning their conference tournament.

Look at these 17 conferences and the current NET Rankings of the teams.

Do all 17 of these conferences deserve to be represented with one of the 68 spots in the NCAA Tournament?

It ain't broke, don't fix it. The most exciting part of the tourney is the first Thursday/Friday.

Reducing auto bids and giving them to bubble teams will create closer games, but that's not what I tune in to see as a fan.
i see your point but look at some of those conferences; does the NEC, for example, deserve an automatic bid?

I always enjoy Championship week becuse you know that at each con. tourney there will be a auto bid awaiting. Do they deserve it yes & no! Yes, not just because thats the way its set up but the emotion and excitment that it brings. No, because most likely they will get beat out that 1st rnd.

Basketball is a game of momentum and getting hot at the right time. I’d rather see a team that’s just started firing on all cylinders, won their conference tourney, and could make some noise in the Dance than some otherwise bubble team who is probably out in the second round anyways.

Plus the selection committee routinely shows bias, so if we can get teams in the tournament that aren’t chosen by them, I’m all for it

Uh, you do realize the conference tourney to decide the NCAA tourney bid is entirely up to the conference?

Hypothetically the Big 10 could appoint their last place team each year to represent them in the NCAA tournament. If you remember, the Big10 didnt have a conference tournament and the regular season champ got the automatic bid.

I see your point though.

Do I want to see a the MEAC auto bid school or a Power 5 school with a 7-13 record? At that point, it really doesnt make a difference.

Did you type all this out?.......

Kicking some conferences out so more 8-10 (or worse) Power 5 conf teams can qualify would be lame. Bad enough they started four lowest 16 seeds play each other first to get their chance at a #1 - unless the conferences that generally play in Dayton actually prefer the current setup

Obviously it can benefit the multi-bid leagues by getting an extra team in the field, but punish a small conference-winning team for having 1 bad game.

The field is so large that it’s not that big of a deal to have a few bad teams, plus it keeps more of the top seeds in which draws more TV viewers.

The conferences should be able to decide for themselves.

Absolutely. The NCAA gives a conference a berth. It is up to the conference to determine how it designates a champion.

For those of you who voted NO, I assume you'd do away with the conference tournament too. What's the point of it, if not an NCAA bid?
I'm stuck there.

I'd like to say "no!", but then what is the point of the tourney?
Isn't it nice to talk about something other than suspensions? ;)

This is all opinions, obviously.

What do you want the NCAA Tournament field of 68 to look like? Exactly like the past? Or would you rather try and find the best 68 teams to create possibly even more madness?

Obviously, there is no movement (or is there?) to end the current set up.

But if there were tweaks, conferences could still have their end of season conferences tournament. The winner gets a trophy, hats, tshirts and a piece of the net! They MIGHT make the NCAA Tournament, too! But if that conference champ does not meet certain criteria, the NCAA Selection Committee might pick another team.

You want drama? CBS could have their cameras on #228 Fairleigh Dickinson, CHAMPIONS of the NEC Conference on Selection Sunday; will the champs of the NEC get picked? Is their 228 ranking enough?

And btw, can anyone tell me what "NEC" stands for before looking it up? I am guessing NorthEast Conference....

Get rid of the auto bids there's probably about 10 conferences that might as well just stop playing.

The MVC is going to be a one bid league.

I think #136 Drake at 22-8 will win the MVC conference tournament. I think they take down Sister Jean and #128 Loyola Chicago, which is currently 18-12. Just a hunch. I think Drake would deserve to make the Dance.

However, if your NET ranking, for example, is 200 or worse, I think the NCAA should consider allowing discretion for the Selection Committee to select another team.

Again, if your NET ranking is 200 or worse, perhaps there should be no guarantees of a Big Dance berth. But you don't go away empty handed; you keep your trophy, your hats, your tshirts, your pieces of netting and your memories of winning your conference tourney.

32 schools currently get into the NCAA Tournament no matter what by simply winning their conference tournament.

And yet, in football, winning the regular season conference championship often means you get LEFT OUT of the post-season tournament. I will never understand why anyone thinks the CFP is a logical, fair, appropriate way to run the D-1 post-season. Every other sport, including every other level of college football, includes dozens of teams, not four chosen by a committee.

Basketball has too many teams. Football has far too few.

The conferences aren’t required to have a tournament to determine the auto bid (the Ivy League didn’t until two years ago). But if they wanted their conference to be as competitive as it can be in the Dance, they would be smart to reduce the number of teams in its conf tournament.

Christ, somebody has A LOT of free time on their hands.

You need to keep the crap conferences in....they fill out the home non-conference schedules for most of the Power 5.

Plus, it doesn't matter who the 16 seed is. They will lose 99% of the time regardless of what conference they come from.

Get rid of the auto bids there's probably about 10 conferences that might as well just stop playing.

Now that Crest...I mean, Colgate, is getting into the NCAA Tournament, thoughts on conf tournament winners receiving automatic NCAA tournament bids?

I still think conferences should have their tournaments; you play the games, a champion is determined; the champs get a trophy, they cut down the nets and they get hats and tshirts. But, if your NET ranking is above a certain number (100?), the Selection Committee might (KEY WORD: might) choose another school over yours.

They call it Selection Sunday for a reason. Just because N Dak State (NET is 222), for example, won their conference does not mean they get selected.

These 12 schools are dancing after winning their conference tournament:

They should just let more teams in. Let 34 more teams in and make them play the 35-68 seeds first. Then proceed on with a 68 team field. Simple.

Making the NCAA Tourney for these 1-bid conference teams is about as thrilling as it gets for those folks. Taking that away so that a team like Indiana could be in this year kills a huge part of college basketball. I hope to God some NCAA bureaucrat doesn’t try pursuing eliminating smaller conference champs.

I just think that the current set up needs to be looked at.

For example:

#222 North Dakota State's record vs D1 teams: 16-15.

#203 Fairleigh Dickinson's record vs D1 teams: 18-13

#202 Iona's record vs D1 teams: 17-15

I think these are 3 candidates where they should not be selected.

The math on that doesn't work, there would be play-in games to the play in games. There is absolutely nothing in this country like March Madness. It's arguably bigger than the World Series and NBA Finals in terms of the cross section of fans it gets from around the country. Blowing it up and reformatting the whole thing would be disastrous for college basketball...dare I say, FIFA-like.

I hear yeh, it would get busy and convoluted, however, HS basketball lets all teams in every year. It can be done if desired. Would not need to add 34 more either.
