I didn’t realize this kid had so many big offers basically from A-Z who’s who in college football offered him. I wonder as we are stacked on the D-Line .. and at end but if he comes in and dominates during the fall practice if he could crack the 2 deep? He’s a monster and a nasty monster with a mean streak with super freak capabilities.. per his strength and conditioning coach that raved about him and made some awesome comparisons. I can’t wait to see both Eppy and Wags on the edges terrorizing QB’s, o linemen and running backs they will be eating for lunch on Saturdays .. very pumped as our defense is going to be lights out and defense wins championships

Lot's of potential, but as AJ learned last year there's a lot to learn. It's exciting to have great talent learning the system and we look forward to them dominating in future years.

Yeah, Waggoner looks very promising for future Iowa defenses. Of course Big Ten football is a whole new universe from the high school football he played. Iowa practices and scrimmages will be a learning experience, to say the least.

It won't just be beating the tackle and rushing the quarterback. He hasn't gone up against tackles like he will at Iowa practices. Keep contain, and fend off those tackles while defending the running game.

But I am with you, I think Waggoner is going to be a very good one.

Lot of potential, but 99% sure he redshirts. We're so deep at DE he'd never sniff the field this year, and he needs some time with Doyle as well.

I can't wait to see what he can do, but it won't be for 2-3 years.

I would go in the opposite direction. We know how KF likes to handle the career arch of players that will contribute in the near future .

I'd bet that he will play a limited amount at DE and get some reps on the FG block unit. They will get him used to travelling and preparing for games. If there is an injury he will see more time. If not we will be talking at this time in 4 years how great it would have been to red shirt him so we would have him 1 more year.

We will be saying it would be great to have Eppy for another year and we'll be saying it would be great to have Waggoner for another year, but both will be NFL ready after 4 years on campus if not sooner and will be more so after playing their true freshman seasons.

This is probably the quietest 4 Star hype of any since I can remember. Which imo is really good for him, but was a HUGE pickup considering his options. I think our recruiting the last 3ish years has been spot on, a good mix of players who all fit the bullies of the big 10. I think we are back to the early 2000’s mentality which is exciting

Part of the quietness may have to do with his quiet senior season and the rumors of alot of those offers being no longer on the table for him

I will be VERY surprised if he doesn't RS.

Good. We need to bloody some opponents this season.

Harbinger, definitely agree with your post as he will definitely need to get stronger etc but from the reports on him already from his trainer is that he’s a beast in the weight room .. already.. so adding at least 30 pounds to a legit 6’5 frame he’s going to be a terror on the outside.. and I hope Eppy comes back in 2019 etc as he will probably have a huge breakout season this year .. the problem landing these gifted 4/5 star kids is they seem to go early (ask Ohio State) they also have a 4/5 star churning mill as they just plug another 5 star in to replace the other 5 star.. as we all know we don’t have that luxury at Iowa.. maybe some day we will but for now we have to protect and play these guys and get the most out of them..

As for our defense.. I think the next few years you’re going to see some of the best if not the best Iowa defenses in the KF era..

Go Hawks

That's often the case for a bunch of players. As schools fill up at particular positions, the offers that they put out become void. The fact that the offered in the first place still point to the young man's potential. However, more important than potential is what he ends up doing with it!

With the log jam of depth we have at DE, barring major injury, wags RS and imo that's a sign of a VERY healthy program. He wont just be transitioning on the football field but also to life as a student.
The Hawks will be graduating 2 DEs (Hesse and Brincks) after the 2018 season. Last year, some internal hype was coming out on Golston and Simon .... it's continued with Golston but has quieted down some concerning Simon. If Simon can reassert himself - then it still will be a nontrivial task for Waggoner to leapfrog Golston and Simon (at least, as a RS FR).

In 2019, our top 3 DEs will most likely be Nelson, Epenesa, and Golston. Waggoner will have a chance to land in the rotation there - so that we have a strong rotation of 4 guys .... but, as I mentioned above, I'm sure that Simon will fight for that #4 spot tooth and nail.

However, assuming Epenesa progresses as we hope ... he'll likely have a decision to make exiting the '19 season. Should that be the case, we'd be losing 2 exceedingly good DEs in Epenesa and Nelson. Hopefully the depth at DE is ready to step up in 2020. I suppose that is part of why the Hawks are likely looking to take on 2 quality DEs in the current class.
