Wandale Robinson

"Rosie picks inside the history of recruiting and some of the tactics that still go one."

Does he discuss Nebraska recruiting tactics from the 80's and 90's?
Just sharing what recruiting is like vs the SEC. Don't want to discuss it, that's fine. Thought some might find a fairly publicized pay scheme interesting.

Feel free to hit the "ignore" button. You'll notice I made no comment about Nebraska in my post. It's just an interesting player pay accusation that I thought others might find interesting.

The only part about Nebraska is they were the leader, but Frost refused to play the game, so the kid chose Kentucky.

yes, he threw some shade at Nebraska and used names.

There is a Nebraska site. You know this, right?

I'm guessing you think Nebraska is among the clean programs. Last I checked, Nebraska is in the top 20 in recruiting and has lost 14 games the past two seasons.
This doesn't have a lot to do with Nebraska's seasons or anything like that. I think Iowa fans believe their program is clean. I thought fan's of a program they believe to be clean would find interesting how some of the not-so-clean dealings unfold.

No big deal if you don't care. I find stuff like this interesting and thought I'd share. Carry on.

Allegedly. What is put out there is not always the truth
Take it however you want. There is no secret that this stuff goes on, especially in the south. There are a lot of details about how the arrangement actually went down that are starting to leak. I didn't think about sharing them because I'm not trying to make this about Nebraska. This is just one of the more public "paying players' families" stories I've heard in a while. Given the timing, it seemed others might find it interesting.

He chose a top 10 program over a team in the middle of a 2-13 run. Shocker.
Top 10 program? There is a difference between a team being ranked at some point during the season in the top 10 and a program being "top 10". There are only so many top 10 programs (usually its 10), Kentucky isn't one of them.

It is interesting. Even more interesting coming from a Husker fan.

Bought and paid for by Kentucky. This is what clean programs are up against.
Could we as Iowa fans, draw the same conclusion about Henrich growing up an Iowa fan, with Iowa ties not taking an official visit? Surely the home school didn’t pull some of these tactics you’re accusing Kentucky of.

Yes he actually did. I’m sure the same type of stuff happened at Iowa.

Feel free to ignore. See my comments on why I shared. Yes, this is about a dealing with Nebraska. I just thought a program like Iowa probably has to battle stuff like this itself, so I thought a few fans would find it interesting.

Don't be so defensive.

Not really defensive as sick and tired about hearing about a crappy football team. Like I said, there is a Nebraska site.

I'm putting it out there. If you want to accuse Nebraska of paying Henrich to stay in Nebraska, go for it. There is very little smoke around that. There is plenty of smoke from a couple of people who don't normally throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks around what happened with Wandale Robinson.

Again, Nebraska's offense will be fine with or without Robinson. I'm much more excited about filling the OL needs than with missing on a Duck-R spot that we can fill more easily. Love to have him? Absolutely. Wish he would have picked Nebraska? Yes. Are there greater offensive needs to fill this year? Also yes.

do you really think nebraska gets all their 4 stars w/o giving a little something extra?
I highly doubt that.
not sure if you're mad that you guys aren't cheating enough or that others are cheating as well.

Did he toss out Bear Bryant and Jerry Tarkanian references? Tarkanian last coached at UNLV 26 years ago. Bear Bryant has been dead for 35 years.

I don't think any team is 100% clean and by the books all the time. Pretty much all color outside the lines at times - of course the magnitude is different.

Iowa has had to deal with this more than a couple times over the years. One of the more recent ones was Chevin Calloway. He was an Iowa commit and a very highly rated CB. He then gets an offer from Ole Miss and a couple other SEC schools because the rumor is that he was shopping for a school. I will quote a Mod here but they said "Iowa wasn't going to play in that sandbox." He soon decommited and ended up at Arkansas.

As far as Nebraska, didn't you find it a bit odd about snagging a bunch of 4 star kids from California to play for Riley (I know the staff had connections)? And what about the rumors that Keyshawn Johnson was a street agent for those kids? I am not saying I believe it, but just because it was put on the internet doesn't make it true.

So burn down Alabama, then, why don't you?

People need to stop pu***footing if they know that Bama cheats.....

You're welcome.

I'm ok with bones bringing it here, I think he was being serious with the intent of the conversation. The kid was swayed, but just as funny to me is listening to the two jokers on 590 calling it a slam dunk & then stroking the UNL fan boner until the thing fell off. Their media & fans really need to let the horse lead the cart because they just look silly with all the babbling they do about recruiting & 'wait for'. 14 losses in past two years? Seriously accomplish something first, bask in it, then do the yapping.

I'd pick Kentucky over Nebraska any day of the year. I'd encourage any other potential college student too as well whether they are an athlete or not. Nebraska brings nothing to the table.

It was widely thought to be between OSU and Nebraska for the last however many weeks. Suddenly, the night before his commitment, Kentucky makes an in-home visit, and this stuff swirls. That's the part that's weird.

I don't care what you think of Kentucky or Nebraska. I brought this here to talk about some of the recruiting "games" that go on. I don't follow recruiting for other schools, if I did, I'm sure I'd find other stuff like this. It's more about how the playing field is not really level for everyone. Either you're willing to do some of this stuff or you're not. I thought maybe it would organically evolve into a "should we pay players" and how would that circumvent some of this. I think that's an interesting discussion as well. Instead, only a few could see past their feelings for Nebraska to actually discuss any of this.

I remember that recruitment a little bit because Nebraska lost a kid to Arkansas a few years earlier named Tevin Mitchel, also a DB from Texas strangely enough, and the talk was his mom was offered a job at the University. Suddenly, Tevin flipped. So the Chevin Calloway flip caught my attention when it happened.

I think Riley was onboard with small stuff to help kids get to Lincoln for unofficial visits. I have no idea what the DB coach he hired was like, but he played a huge part in that. He's at Oregon now, and look where that class ranked. He's killing it out there. Keith Williams was really the only other one that was crushing it. Between the two of them, they had a big hand in most of the higher ranked kids that came in from the program. From my understanding, we could have brought two more 4 star WRs and a 5 star to Lincoln for about 175k total. We chose not to.

Where you're wrong is that you think I'm mad at all. This stuff happens, normally there isn't so much of a public "outing" of information. So I was interested in a discussion with people who don't have a horse in this specific race, that's all.

I don't think paying players will fix the issue of bag men. The only way you are going to be able to pay players is pay them all the same in all the sports that are offered. Currently (depends on the school and location) but players get a stipend of close to $5000/year or around $500/month to do whatever they want with. If every school offers the same financial incentives then bag men will still be in business.

What do you think the solution is, then? Is there a way to stop it or level the playing field?

I don't. Some people think that letting players make money off their likeness would solve the problem. Who do you think gains the most from that? If I am Nike who am I going to sponsor or make an Ad about? The QB of a blue blood program that happens to be a Nike school and has a ton of fan support. Or the QB of Kansas? Even though the QB at Kansas may have better stats that season.

So to answer your question, I really don't have an answer. Even in the NFL with all the salary caps, I bet there are unreported side deals trying to get players to sign for a little less money than they are worth just so they can stay under.

So a kid has an in home visit from a staff and then the next day he commits to that staff/school? Boy, that is almost unheard of and must mean shady things are happening.
