IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz announced Thursday that defensive back Solomon Warfield will transfer from the Hawkeye football program.

“Solomon has elected to complete his athletic and academic careers elsewhere, leaving the University of Iowa and our program” said Ferentz. “We appreciate his contributions during his time with Iowa football and wish him the best with his decision.”

Warfield is a native of Lorain, Ohio, where he attended St. Edward High School. Warfield redshirted as a true freshman in 2013. Last season he saw action on one game, Iowa’s win over Indiana, but had no statistics.

Rumor was he wasn't going to see the field this year, some incoming freshman and RS players were beating him out.

Seemed like a quality recruit out of HS.

This sucks! A buddy of mine told me on Monday evening that Jaleel Johnson was also looking at tranfering as well. Hope that's not true

How could the incoming freshman be beating him out if practices hadn't started?

it is amazing to me how quick some kids leave now. He is only going into his sophomore year.

He was a strong safety, right? If so the guys ahead of him are a SO and RSFR, so it's not like he'd be waiting on older guys. If he plays free safety, then ignore me.

Be shocked if Jaleel would transfer after staying in Iowa to work out all summer and penciled in as a starting DT.

Always hate to lose kids who went to big time high school programs. Iowa ruined their in with the big Baltimore and DC schools with Rhamdo, ruined their connection with Bolingbrook years ago, Glenville connection is no more, among others.

IowA still recruits DC and would not say the connection is ruined
Bolingbrook?? What player ever did well at IowA from there
Grenville has OSU first for all better recruits so was never a strong connection there.

Lack of depth and talent. Iowa isn't good enough to lose anyone at this point

Major over-reaction. This is not the 70's and 80's where you had 125 schollys and kids would just sit around hoping to play. He's 3rd string or more on the depth chart behind 2 young players. This is a decision about PT and you cannot fault the kid for that.

Stinks to lose anyone but you can only play so many guys. What the real issue is that has been concerning is the evaluation of who those guys are that get those top 2 spots at each position. If the wins had been there this would not be a concern. We also do not blow many opponents out so those young guys down on the depth chart do not see action to show what they bring to the table.

That's a pile of BS...... and your buddy is an idiot.
Not really but I relay that Mr. Kungpowcoqchow thinks he's a dumb dumb. Honestly, you're such a mouthpiece for the Iowa Athletic department on these message boards that it's impossible to take you seriously or think that you're not a paid mole by the athletic department to spin anything negative into a positive or a "no big deal" on these boards. You need new kneepads yet? Your current KF ones are getting a little worn

"My buddy told me....." is one of the classic ways to introduce an invented story or vague rumor in order to add negativity. It also fits your bleak outlook on Iowa football.

My buddy told me Tuesday night that you are looking into joining ISIS. Hope that's not true.

Not saying its true, its just what I heard so I thought I should probably publish it in a public discussion forum.

reporters for hawkeye report were the ones who stated it. Said he was buried on the depth chart under freshman and RS freshman. Whatever that means.

Figures. So who's next in line............................to transfer that is. Surely, there's got to be another player on the roster that isn't happy with playing time or that the team won't be winning a national title in their lifetime. They should be looking at transferring to a school like Southern Illinois, where the possibilities are endless!!!!

The ISIS remark was way, way out of line!!!

Good luck to him. Can't blame a player who wants to play. It sucks for the program because of the wasted time and work put in tho.

Unless I am remembering incorrectly, Niko13 has had some of the best inside information on the boards for the last few years.

He was good friends with at least one starter on the team.

In this case I hope he is wrong but the people calling him out might end up looking pretty stupid.

The problem with your post is that it makes absolutely no sense that Jaleel would want to transfer - especially considering the following factors:
  1. He got A LOT of quality reps last year and is slated to be a starter this year.
  2. He's already used up his redshirt season ... so he'd be burning a year of eligibility. The only guys who transfer in these cases are either guys who aren't seeing the field AT ALL (like Warfield) or are guys who are in big trouble and want to leave before the crap hits the fan.
  3. Jaleel's position coach is Reece Morgan ... the one position coach who has the absolute lowest attrition rate of ALL Iowa's position coaches.
  4. He's slated to be a starter in a unit that regularly places guys onto NFL rosters. The guy seems smart enough to realize that he's really well positioned at Iowa. Hopefully I'm not wrong there ... Football players have been known to be numbskulls though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Niko13, in fact, hear something. However, given that info can definitely get lost in translation ... particularly as it relates to names ... I wouldn't be surprised if the name was Jalen or Jameer, rather than Jaleel. As I indicated in the post above, it would probably take rather extreme circumstances for Jaleel to consider transferring RIGHT NOW. Now, a year or two ago, I'm sure Jaleel was considering transferring ... he was expecting to earn significant reps as early as his freshman season ... and it's a matter of record that he's felt a little impatient (with regard to wanting more reps).

Yeah… I'll bet they are. I guess fall practice starts earlier at Iowa than the rest of the B10.
Santa Barbara is a nice place - lived there six years.

As for Iowa's secondary ... the word I had heard was that the young guys were really making nice strides this past spring. Also, guys typically work together a lot doing position drills during the summer (along with the usual strength and condition) - it's just not supervised by coaches. That's pretty much standard across the entire college football landscape. If you're not continuing to refine your skill set ... you're going to be left behind in the dust.

Very nice, what did you do in Santa Barbara?

Grad school in physics - hung out near daily at the (Kavli) Institute for Theoretical Physics. When I wasn't there - I was indulging at La Super Rica ... and wishing I could eat more frequently at the Palace Grill (their crayfish etouffee is to die for ... and their bread pudding is darn nice too). Had lots of friends who'd live out of their car just so they could surf 24/7 ... although they cursed the existence of the Channel Islands because they accused them of reducing the righteousness of their surf. Good times ... ironically, I now live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Palace Grill... one of my favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara. Best Cajun food around. You have good taste, except when it comes to college football... JK. Haven't lived out of my car in Santa Barbara luckily. Did live out of my van in Palo Alto during grad school. Actually, some of the best years of my life. Channel Islands do inhibit the surf a bit, but protect the coast from storm surge. Also some great spearfishing off the channel Islands, which I take full advantage of. Did you ever make it to Cold Springs Tavern while in SB?
By the way, Lincoln is a great city. Could do a lot worse.

I'll bet if Nicko13 said his buddy told him, Jaleel Johnson was looking awesome and can't be blocked, you'd be alright with that, my buddy told me info. Are you being paid by Iowa ?

Jaleel is not going anywhere! Solomon was a tweener between cb and safety. You can't play safety at 180 in the B1G. Good kid by all accounts. He did probably see our young safety duo of Taylor and Snyder in front of him. He wasn't suited during the bowl game and didn't participate during spring activities which either tells me be had some sort of elgibility issue or injury. Really hurts our depth at safety. I'm guessing Hockaday stays at Safety for a year until we can bring some young safeties along.

From what I understand, it seems like the year we took in the big haul of defensive backs in 2014 - most of those guys were "hits" rather than misses. When you add an in-state gamer like Snyder ... it ups the level of competition even higher.

While Solomon had the benefit of knowing our systems a little better than the guys who are a year his junior - I doubt that his departure impacts our depth at DB all that much.

I tend to have an affinity for nice campus towns ... and Lincoln is a great town. I just find it amusing that over the past 10 years I've lived in Champaign, Illinois and Lincoln, Nebraska ... both border states and homes to "the enemy!" For what it's worth, I thought that the University of Illinois has an absolute great academic environment ... however, I was never enamored with the Urbana-Champaign area itself. Both Lincoln and Iowa City/Coralville blow Urbana-Champaign out of the water as places to live.

I don't know about him, but I personally prefer the "my buddy told me" stories where the buddy is actually correct. That's just me, though.
