Heading there for the first time with the family. Where are the better, safe neighborhoods/areas to stay?

Thanks.

Are you looking to stay close to the Mall, or out a bit farther and taking the Metro to the Mall?

We stayed at the Double Tree in Silver Spring last time we were there. Nice place, about a 5 minute walk to the Metra (I think it's the Red Line out there), some decent places to eat within walking distance, pretty clean, safe, decent area.

Also have stayed out in Old Town, Alexandria just off the Metra before too. That was nice also. We just looked for good prices on hotels in decent areas and near the rail. We liked either place.

Rosslyn is a good area...another poster will be staying at the Holiday Inn at Key Bridge...very convenient location.

Safe and nice, and would like to be close to the metro. Is it better to stay closer to the mall?

There are some good areas by the mall, but it's cheaper if you stay farther out. Rosslyn is maybe 20 minutes by Metro to the Mall, depending on where you get off. Walkable to Georgetown (plenty of good restaurants; go to Baked and Wired, skip Georgetown Cupcakes). It's also one stop from Arlington Cemetery and three from Regan National. That's where I stay, but I also stay with family, so it's an easy decision for me. :)
