I just came across an old photo online of Kinnick Stadium and area from the early 60s. In this shot the water tower is painted with the words "State University of Iowa," as it was known then, on the west side. You have to look closely, and it helps if you can enlarge it, but it's there. Just thought I'd mention it, FWIW.

Interesting. Thank you for posting that picture.

What were those buildings on the west side of the stadium?

Funny how the east grandstand have basically been left unchanged after all these years. Would love to see some more club seating or something to raise the elevation of that side.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some pictures of the east stands with some sort of press box at the top, real early pre-50's

Yes, the original press box was a single story at the top of the east stands. The fancy new press box on the west side was built in Evy's days and served until replaced several years ago with what we have now.

The North endzone only says "Hawks."

I am embarrassed to not know the answer... was it originally the State University of Iowa Hawks and then later changed to University of Iowa Hawkeyes? Or has it always been the Hawkeyes, but they just went with the nickname Hawks for the field?

An interesting thing about the Kinnick sidelines is that they did one thing right and one thing wrong in the original construction. What they did right was place the stands very close to the field. What they did wrong was extend them too far north and south beyond the field of play. So...what we've got as a result is a stadium with amazing sidelines that intimidate the opposition, but, we've also got a stadium with endzone seating that's further back from the field than it should be.

The enclosed south endzone was cool! It was closer to the field than the rebuilt south stands are. I wasn't sorry to see the goofy grassy knolls go away though! lol
