Iowa versus Drake Women’s Basketball Canceled

IOWA CITY, Iowa --
The Iowa women’s basketball team has canceled Sunday’s home game against Drake out of abundance of caution due to positive COVID-19 test results within the program. In addition, Iowa’s appearance at next week’s Cancun Challenge has been canceled.

"We’re obviously disappointed but understand this is the right decision,” said Lisa Bluder, P. Sue Beckwith, M.D., Head Women’s Basketball Coach. “Our team and staff have followed best practices. But unfortunately, a number of individuals experienced symptoms and tested positive. We will continue to follow the guidance of our medical staff and look forward to returning to the court.”

The Iowa Athletic Ticket Office will be communicating with individuals who had purchased tickets to Sunday’s game.

What happens if a conference game is cancelled due to COVID? Is it counted as a loss? I seem to have read somewhere that that's the case for the football games.

It’s a forfeit. Hell, Rutgers just cancelled both their volleyball games this weekend due to non-Covid illness and they are both forfeits.

That is too bad. I hope they all bounce back fast. It would have been fun seeing Bluder go for win 800 versus Drake.
I agree, I was really looking forward to watching her possibly get win #800 against Drake. It looked like ticket sales were doing good too.

Next scheduled game is at Duke on December 2nd as a part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Coach Lisa Bluder will have to wait a couple of weeks for win #800.

I smell an upset already. We're gonna be rusty that game.
That will definetly be a concern going in to the game. Not sure how much the team will get to work over the next couple weeks. Will get to meet with Bluder and players on 12/1 before they head to Durham.

OK, the NCAA rule does say that a forfeit is counted as a loss and the other team gets a win.
A forfeit has to count as a loss doesn't it? If it simply counted as a game not played then the opponent would have the same burden as the team that forfeits, no? Maybe for these tournaments they treat it more lax, but I'm pretty sure conference games would have to be losses.

It's spreading, hope the men got their booster and can keep going all season like last year!!
The vaccines are great for reducing symptoms and making you much stronger in fighting off Covid, but unfortunately it hasn't been equally strong in eliminating the catch and transmission of it to others.

I wouldn't be surprised if Illinois football has a notable Covid outbreak right now, but Bret is the only one showing obvious symptoms. And since most of the team is vaccinated, the players won't get tested unless they show symptoms. This is probably prevented a lot of college games in all sports from being canceled this fall. Is that the right answer? I have no idea.

Drake, Seton Hall, and USC would have been quality opponents. I wonder if Iowa tries to reschedule Drake later this year. Also this means Bluder's attempt at 800 wins will be at Duke in December.

I was thinking the same thing. Their NCAA tournament resume might take a hit after not playing those games

I know the men's team is 100% vaccinated. And based on this, the players & staff only get tested if they have symptoms, correct? Will they/have they gotten booster shots?

Do you know if the women's team is 100% vaccinated? Will they/have they gotten booster shots?

That is correct that they only get tested if they show symptoms. Not sure on vaccination status or the booster shot. Will likely get talked about soon.

I remember the Men's team tweeting out that they were 100% vaccinated. And Fran mentioned it during at least one press conference.

I don't recall Lisa ever commenting on whether her team was 100% vaccinated; maybe I missed it. I think all of her staff (but not sure) are vaccinated and, IIRC, if a player is unvaccinated, they are tested daily (or at least couple times a week).

This is an interesting story, to say the least, and now we are all racking our brains to remember the dang protocols. ;)

thanks Suter.

Anybody correct me if I am wrong but it appears that since the staff & players are all vaccinated, the ONLY time anyone gets tested is if they experience symptoms (and that's what occurred).

@KyleHuesmann , can't wait to learn more on this, because it sounds like several players had symptoms and then tested positive.

Now what? Who now goes into quarantine? When are players who tested positive eligible to come back to practice? Are the players who are negative eligible to practice with staff? I can't keep the protocols straight. ;)

Well I was planning on going to Durham for the Duke game. Hopefully they'll all be COVID free and healthy by then

We don’t get to talk to the Bluder or the team until 12/1 the day before the Duke game. But I’m sure the whole situation will get discussed.

Getting my booster tomorrow morning.

fearing with the holidays upon us and masking being less common (at least in my area) we're on the presipus of another spike :(

stay safe and well

What I remain concerned about is our Iowa football team, which is not 100% vaccinated.

And speaking of spikes, in Minnesota, we are going backwards.

I am looking at an article from the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The numbers are awful.

Some excerpts:

Boosters for all adults have been approved to try & slow the spread of the highly contagious delta variant. Anyone 18 and older becomes eligible for a booster six months after their second Pfizer or Moderna shot. Boosters for everyone who received the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine were approved in October.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Minnesota surpassed 1,400 for the first time since last December.

Minnesota's hospitals reported that they were caring for 1,414 patients with complications from COVID-19, including 340 in intensive care.

98% of adult beds were occupied and 56 hospitals reported that their adult ICU beds were at capacity.

Pediatric ICU bed space also was tight at 92% capacity as of Thursday.

Minnesota on Friday reported another 5,162 new infections and 30 additional deaths.

Minnesota's case surge shows no sign of slowing down. The testing positivity rate has risen to 10.8%.

A shortage of health care workers this fall has put new pressures on the hospital system.

Testing laboratories reported 55,526 COVID-19 test results to the state health agency on Thursday. On average, 43,000 test results are being reported daily compared with 34,000 at the beginning of November.

State officials also announced Friday that they have entered into master contracts with 11 testing laboratories to make it easier for state and local governments, including school districts, to select labs to process tests.

Football teams is in the 90%+ range.

Where are all the anti-vaxers, COVID is a hoax posters now?

Aaron Rodgers says he isn't vaccinated because he's "a critical thinker." LOL Do you suppose he believes those of us on this board, critical thinkers and all, are qualified to critique his performance as a QB? Yet he thinks his superior mind is qualified to override the decades of study and experience by experts in the field when it comes to COVID and vaccinations. Now that's some deep analysis.

Maybe Aaron and those like him should stand in the middle of I-80 with their love of personal freedom and analytical minds and see how that works. Their approach to COVID is about the same thing, with the huge exception that standing in the middle of the interstate doesn't impact me, but not getting vaccinated most certainly could.

But even getting vaccinated is not, and never was advertised, as a 100 percent guarantee against getting COVID. That's why taking one for the team--the American people--and continuing to wear a mask is necessary, as difficult as wearing a mask is . . .

The best anyone can do is get vaccinated, get the booster, wear a mask, and social distance. By doing those things you are protecting yourself and the rest of us to the best of your ability. Or the next time you get some other serious illness or disease, don't bother the doctors and the hospitals, call your nearest cult-party politician--or Aaron Rodgers.

How could they get the dreaded Covid if they're vaccinated? So strange how the Covid works.
The issue of course is that even if vaccinated, the effects only protect for so long, even though your chances of getting it again and the severity are less with the vaccine. Now IF more people had been vaccinated early on then the variant may not have fully developed and this thing might have been stomped down to where it would have been much less likely to reoccur even once the protection had diluted. Unfortunately, that did not happen because so many chose a different path, and now were headed once more down the rabbit hole.

Yes, we're all going to be dead by Valentines Day because of people who aren't vaccinated. Lol, they own you.

Yes of course they do. What exactly did I give "THEM" by protecting myself and my family? I don't claim to be a medical expert. But here's what I do know. I work in Johnson county on the Kansas side of the KC Metro. They pulled their mask mandates a few weeks back, because they were doing much better on new cases. On the news two days ago that Johnson county has seen a big spike in new cases in the last few days, and their now back in the high risk transmission with a spike higher then they've had since last winter. I live on the Missouri side in jackson county. It encompasses KCMO and most of the bigger suberbs on the Missouri side. They've been making progress so they pulled most of their mandates this week. I'd be willing to bet after going through Thanksgiving get togethers, and no masks, that somewhere about mid December you'll see a big spike in Jackson county, on positives, hospitalizations and eventually more deaths. I'd send you a pm when Mayor Lucas has to reinstitute mask mandates but I'm sure you don't care. I'm not here to stomp out anyones freedom of choice, but it would be nice if we don't end up going back to business owners having to limit customers or shutter the doors all together like what happened last year. Believe or not, ( and I know that you don't), these decisions are NOT just effecting the person who makes them....
