WBB Transfer Portal Targets 2025-2026 (Updated 5/22/25)

Perhaps I misunderstood your Stremlow comments.
I don't think you misunderstood. I'm just recognizing where things look with 8 days left in the portal, and I truly hope our sophomores improve in a way that can help mitigate that problem.

Stremlow did have some very good games where she carried entire sequences, so we have to hope that can evolve to bigger and better things as she (and the others) continues. So I'm hoping the opportunity presented... inspires growth. Idk.

Saw this on TOS. Melannie Daley from Northwestern in the portal. An interesting option.

Zero inside info here, but maybe Jan should take a look at Lily Carmody from Butler.

She is from Australia and played a couple seasons of pro ball at a young age there. Had a so-so freshman year at Butler, but is a 5-11 combo guard, known for a high-motor. Three years eligibility left.

She has only shot 22 three-pointers in her college career. I know Jensen has already changed plenty from the Bluder era, but I'd be pretty stunned if they added a guard that just doesn't shoot threes.

Stuelke has shot 31 threes in her career for a reference to how shockingly low 22 is.

Daley is a double-figures BIG conference-game scorer who can score in the mid-range off the bounce. Not a perfect fit, but Iowa is in need of players who can play off the bounce, including scoring in the mid range. The returning guards (Kylie, McCabe & Stremlow) lack this ability.

Edit: She’s also a 1-year rental, perhaps a good thing for ‘26 recruiting.

The number of days "left in the portal" makes no difference. Once their in they can committ anytime. They just can't enter the portal. There will still be 6 - 700 girls in the portal next week. Just have to identify someone who good make a difference.

Ah, of course. Not sure why I decided to make it a commit deadline in my head today. Irrational overreaction?

Do you see Deal as an ultra quick player? Are you sure she is a One rather than a two or three? The quickest player I ever saw play at Iowa was in fact 6 foot tall. Any guesses who that would be? Yes--Ronnie Lester.
Ronnie was 6’2”.

Striking out on top targets will be a good test of Jan's player evaluation skills. There are still players who can help. A player similar to Nebraska's portal pickup from Florida last year, Alberte Rimdal, would be a godsend at this point.
I think a sleeper still available is Lexi Fleming of Bowling Green. She would be a 5th year senior. She torn an ACL I believe at the start of her 3rd year. She plays hard. Stats are around 13pg 4rb 4ap. She is a Molly Davis in waiting and would love and fit with Hawks and fans would love her like Molly. She can score and bring the ball up the court which would help with Stremlow and Levin gaining experience at a fair pace. Obviously Heckel would be the dream. But being realistic lets improve while not totally disrupting our soph class. Lexi would be grateful team player like Molly and could add points which we need like Lucy deed.

On that note .... lets go for Kneepkens. She provides points when the need to step up.

Get Kneepkens and Fleming and we would for sure have pieces to better our team an keep chemistry.

Love the enthusiasm but I believe kneepkens set her top 3 and iowa wasn't in it.

alot of people are sold on callie at the 1. I think she's more of a 2 or 3.

Alot of people are sleeping in kennise. I think she will play more than people think. Yes, we need a starter. But her high school tape looked good.

Only reason she didn't play last year was cause of a redshirt injury. With her handles and speed I don't see us losing some of the games where we couldn't break the press.

Yes she was a 3* recruit. Right out of the top 100. But she was in an all womens academy that wasn't looked at/scouted much

Kennise was shockingly bad when she got minutes at the end of games last year. At her size she would have to have elite skills and quickness to be able to play in the B1G.

She didn't play last year. She wouldn't of got minutes the year before with gabby and molly

I don't think it is a stretch to say Deal will be an immediate starter and a candidate for freshman of the year in the BIG. Coming out of high school, she is on par with Caitlin.

Saying she's on par with Caitlin coming out of high school is a big stretch, however.

She played 43 minutes the entire year and took six shots. It is impossible to tell how good she might be next season.
I think this is the reason so many assume she won't be part of the rotation. As a freshman she barely played and clearly needed more development. Then she suffered a significant knee injury and missed an entire season.

We don't know if she's developed at all since her freshman year and we also don't know that she will be completely healthy returning from injury.

It's not impossible that she is part of the rotation next year, it's just that there are a lot of unknown factors stacked against her.

I think Daley could maybe work on a team where the 4 is a good three-point shooter. But my fear is if Daley is inserted into a lineup with Feuerbach, Stuelke, and Heiden, opposing teams are just going to camp in the lane.

In that lineup you only have to guard Daley out to the elbow or short corner. Her defender will be in great position to help double the post or help on drives. Same with Stuelke's defender. Feuerbach's defender can't play quite as far off, but she doesn't shoot it well enough that it's a huge problem if the defender gets caught helping on defense. That lack of spacing would make it very hard for Heiden to operate.

I know this seems crazy for an Iowa team, but right now McCabe is the only player likely to be part of Iowa's rotation next year that has shot greater than 31% from 3 in a college season. There's plenty of optimism Deal will be a good shooter. Stremlow and especially Mallegni could certainly improve. But I think Iowa would be wise to make sure a transfer can shoot the three well if at all possible.

The big thing about her is that she has been practicing for the past couple of months, so by next season, she will be about 22 months out from surgery, much longer than AG when she returned this season. Physically, she should be fine. Ability-wise, it remains to be seen, but Lisa recruited her for a reason.

I think Johnson was always seen as more of a development player. Iowa also tried hard to land Jasmine Brown in the same class even after Johnson committed. Her offer list also wasn't very stellar: SMU (pre-ACC move), Michigan State, Seton Hall, Bradley, Cleveland State, Illinois State, Illinois Chicago, Oakland and William & Mary.

The allure of playing in front of 3,000 people is just to hard to pass up.
I am now nearly convinced that crowd size just does not carry much influence with portal players, at least for top ranked portal players. If there is some allure to fan support, it appears to be a secondary consideration for highly valued transfers.

“the allure of playing in front of 3,000 people is just to hard to pass up”

IMO it is more accurate to say;

“the allure of playing in front of a home crowd of 15,000 people is not difficult to pass up”

Jada, but not Kennise. She was injured after 8 or 10 games and never played the rest of the 23-24 season.
I think not. She wasn't injured until right before the end of the season. Don't remember them bringing it up until we played OSU to finish the season. The game CC22 broke Pistol Petes record....

You are correct, Johnson was hurt during practice before the Ohio State game played March 3, 2024. So, the start of the next season will be 20 months since her injury.

Thats what I thought. I knew it was a practice injury and right at the end of the year. Then we lost Molly Davis in that same game for senior night, and that was the end of her career. Rough week...

You can see why Johnson never played. Who is she going to take minutes from, Caitlin or Molly? Bluder also kept Caitlin in games late, often well after the outcome was decided. She knew people wanted to see Caitlin play, and she wanted Caitlin to set records.

I don't necessarily think that Bluder kept playing CC late game with the goal of setting records. Setting records was just a by product of CC playing basketball.

x 1000 If it did, Iowa State, Iowa and Indiana would be recruiting juggernauts, instead of teams that struggle mightily to recruit McDonald's AA-level players.

Similarly, TV viewership seems not to matter. This season, there were 9 BTN WBB games with viewership north of 200,000. Iowa played in 7 of them, including 4 of the top 5. The OSU-UCLA BIG tourney semi-final was 9th, and the Michigan-USC BIG semi-final didn't even crack 200,000 viewers. But it doesn't seem to matter. Also wonder how much Iowa sells its viewership numbers. Don't think I've seen anything from Bailey Turner at UI pushing the Iowa viewership narrative.
