But not in a good way. ESPN ranked all the losses so far in The Dance and determined that Iowa’s sputtering performance against Richmond was 4th most painful, even worse than top seed Gonzaga’s (5th). Below Iowa was Purdue, Kentucky and Duke.

Two of the losses to St. Pete were worse than Iowa’s. That is what is being ranked.

It was definitely painful. Richmond was just not very good. Before any Richmond fans come on here and whine, the Spiders totally deserved to win, they played better. But Iowa has never had a chance like this in the previous 20 years, playing a team ranked in the 80s in KenPom followed by a team in the 30s to get to the Sweet 16.

That's what happens when the rest of your roster plays (and shoots) like dog sh** and mentally folds when Keegan isn't dominating, mainly because he rolled his ankle in the 1st half and became entirely passive until the final 4 minutes when he was magically able to easily post up on their defenders on like 3 straight possessions.............and then never go back to it the rest of the short amount of time you had left, instead settling for garbage chucking/conceding.

Yes, that's what happens.........

These rankings are dumb and biased. Our loss may be top 10 most painful, but there were a lot more than 3 more painful than ours.

1 seed and defending champ Baylor losing in the 2nd round was way worse than our game when they should have been playing this weekend.
3 seed Wisconsin losing an in-state game to an 11 seed was way worse when they seemingly had a cakewalk to the sweet sixteen.
3 seed Tennessee losing to an 11 seed was way worse with the sweet sixteen on the line.
2 seed Kentucky and 3 seed Purdue losing to a 15 seed are both way worse when both of those teams should have been title contenders.
7 seed Murray State losing to a 15 seed for what would have been their first ever sweet sixteen was way worse.
2 seed Auburn losing to a 10 seed was worse when they should have been an elite eight team.
And since this is an index of painful losses, I’ll accept the Duke losing to UNC at the top of the list too.

So right there that is 8 losses more painful than ours. We were a 5 seed that wasn’t supposed to make it out of the first weekend. Losing a close one sucks in the first round, and it seemed the bracket was set up well for us moving forward. But looking at it after the results, I’m not sure we beat Providence and definitely not Kansas if we make it past the first game.

Not to poke, but Baylor losing to the team who very well may be holding the trophy tonight is a bad loss?

Any 1 seed losing before the Final a four is more painful than our loss, even if that team that beat them could be the champ. A 1 seed is expected to win those first weekend games. At least one 5 seed is expected to lose in the first round each year, there were two of those this year.

I’m sure the Baylor fans thought they were lined up for another deep run to challenge for a championship. Our fans were hoping to make the sweet sixteen against Kansas and then roll the dice from there.

How could Duke losing in Final 4 in a good game be worse than Iowa's loss? The media is biased towards blue bloods even when losing.

The list isn’t worst losses, but most painful losses. Coach K losing to UNC in his last game when the teams are meeting in the Tournament for the first time ever can be construed as painful.

Exactly. These are being ranked on a PAIN scale.

For instance, I would rank Iowa's loss to UNLV in 1987 as one of the most painful ever for this program. But losing by 3 points to the #1 team in the country in the Elite 8 definitely was not a "bad" loss.

To me personally, none of the other losses were as painful as the Richmond debacle, but given the other teams that also laid an egg in the tournament, we are in pretty good company.

Are you really arguing about potential worse losses than ours? Who cares, we never should have lost and any other discussion about it is a waste of time.

Sez who? You were the hottest team in the nation at the time and there had to be 20 posts here about how underseeded you were.

Saint Peter's had the worst loss- F4 on the line and they get run off the floor by an 8-seed

5 championships would dull that pain a little IMO. Watching an Iowa team that a lot had picked as a final 4 team flail against an average A10 team was painful.
