Impressive play from Woody in a muttload of minutes!!
Uhl played well off the bench!

To be fair, FSU was 1-10 at half from 3. We shot better from 3 than them. Starters played well, good minutes from Uhl.
By the way, I know some of us watched Bacon with Fleming at oak hill and determined he was a volume shooter. I don't know how he finished but at half he doubled any other Seminole's fg attempts.

We are are better shooting team than FSU statistically. Bacon especially is just a frog up and shoot guy with little shot selection. We also executed better on D. They just tried to overwhelm us with their athleticism. I was noticing a strange phenomenon in the second half. Made FGs, made 3pt attempts, and made FTs were identical between the 2 teams until the last couple minutes of OT. But FSU just had more attempts at FGs and 3pters. Iowa has shot much better from 3 all season than FSU. But they got a lot more rbs. Rebounding is where we could really use some improvement. If we would have equalled FSU's rebounding, the game would have been comfortably over in regulation. To be fair, FSU was 1-10 at half from 3. We shot better from 3 than them. This is a good point. Woody doesn't know how to draw a charge. He often gets called for fouls where he doesn't reach and is in position, but doesn't seem to sell the charge. I hate flopping, but a little acting would get a few calls.Woody has been playing very well! The one thing I'm disappointed that he hasn't improved/learned is his defensive position when it comes to taking a possible charge. He recoils on contact which has lead to many of his fouls, where if he would have held his ground and allow the offensive player to plow in to him, he'd have a very good chance to take a charge.
I sense to much reasoning as to why the game was close in this thread....
Both teams played poorly and neither one is that much better than the other right now. Some are better at elbowing out on rebounds and traveling than the other - is what the game shows any audience.
By seasons end this game would have looked a lot different.
Iowa hasn't exactly played the sisters of the poor the last 5 games in Marquette, Dayton, Notre Dame, Wichita State & Florida State...so cant be complaining about the lack of good competition in Non-Conference.
...blew out 2 of them...got behind in 2 of them falling short after comebacks from double digit opponent leads..played a great back & forth game with Florida St (who I consider the best talent of the 5 ... they just don't play very unselfish)...come NCAA tourney FlaSt could be a really good sleeper pick...they got a lot of weapons...if they learn to share...they could be really good.
I actually thought we played pretty good last night...could have made a few more open looks...but held a really talented team to less than 40%..our guys battled on every possession / offense to defense.
In order to win Fran played his vets. Minutes Gesell (40), Uthoff (39), Clemmons (36), Jok (34), Woodbury (33)...only reserve over 10 was Uhl (19)...in isolating watching Dom on defense he is getting better and held his own. How many times will you see Woody shorter than 2 guys on the other team? Woody was outstanding in all phases (and has been all year).
Didn't like the last possession in regulation..thought we could have done better with a TimeOut at that point.
Jok is an offensive game changer...when he gets hot. the game winning 3 was nice to see..he does need to shoot a better overall %.
would be nice going to Ames sitting at 7-2..but don't discount Western Illinois...they beat Wisconsin.

Overall, Woody is playing very well.
I understand the restricted zone, but Woody tends brace himself when the offensive player is coming toward him, so he usually doesn't move backwards much on impact. I think the zebras give him a foul or two just about every game on plays where he has position outside the restricted area, doesn't reach with his hands, and contact is initiated by the offensive player. I know Woody is a tough guy, but drawing charges is a really valuable skill. Keep in mind that I am NOT a Woody hater, and think he is playing really good ball.the semicircle in the paint area (now expanded even more) restricts draw charges by the defensive player regardless. you cant sell a charge under the rule If a defensive player is inside the restricted zone, an offensive player who makes contact with him cannot be called for a charging foul. This rule change was added to make the game safer, more fair and easier to referee.
even if Woody would attempt to flop it wouldn't have an impact inside the restricted zone...the worse thing that could happen is Woody picking up fouls because he is trying to draw a charge inside when the rules don't allow it. We need Woody on the floor not on the bench because of foul trouble.
if you are referring to outside the restricted area...trying to draw a charge is OK...all depends on who the opponent is. If a player is trying to back Woody down..I'd prefer one of the other guys trying to strip the ball..Gesell has done this on occasion.
Yes Woody has played terrific...
A couple of big downers I saw in the stats.
1. Killed on points in the paint. -16.
2. Beat on the boards again. -6.
Those 2 stats will result in many losses if they are repeated in B1G play.

Leonard Hamilton seems to always have some great players, but they never seem to mesh into a really good team.Coaching won this one kids. And it was nice to see Fran get another close one.

It's funny how many Iowa fans don't respect Fran's ability to coach--he can't recruit, he can't make good in-game decisions, he never calls the right plays... It's amazing that Iowa is somehow winning without good players or coaches.
