An open letter to Barack Obama:

Mr. President, it is time. You must speak. Your country needs you.

Eleven summers ago, as you accepted the Democratic nomination for president, you announced: “Tonight, I say to the people of America, to Democrats and Republicans and independents across this great land: Enough. This moment — this election — is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive.”

Of course, we knew then that our nation had deep political differences, and would continue to. Only the most naive among us would have expected the election of the first African American president to come about with no backlash.

But would anyone have anticipated that within a dozen years, we would hear another president tell four nonwhite congresswomen — three of whom were born in this country — to “go back” to where they came from?

Donald Trump’s tweets over the weekend were the basest kind of bigotry, the oldest of racist tropes. And they were a reminder that in the eyes of some, who apparently include our current president, people of color will never be seen as fully American, regardless of how many generations their families have been part of this nation’s story or how much they achieve as individuals.

President Obama, I understand your reluctance to weigh in on Trump’s latest transgression. You are a respecter of norms, including the one dictating that former presidents steer clear of criticizing their successors. And for all the barriers you shattered, racism was never a topic upon which you seemed eager to hold forth.

But silence now is unacceptable. It is time to make yourself heard.

We have long since given up expectations that anyone in Trump’s own party will do or say anything to call him out for what he is. The few who tried at the beginning have capitulated, been driven from office or walked away.

For Trump, racism is not a moral failing; it is a political tactic. None of us can really claim to understand what is in his heart, but the cynicism of his actions is apparent, and it must be exposed for what it is.

No one knows that better than you do. Trump launched his political career by spreading a blatantly racist lie that you had been born in Africa.

Sen. King: Anti-immigrant sentiment is nothing new, but White House tweets inflame it

Anti-immigrant fearmongering is part of American history, but we've always overcome it. Trump is complicating this, says Sen. Angus King (I-Maine). (Joy Sharon Yi, Kate Woodsome/The Washington Post)
At the time, Americans could still be hopeful enough about who we were to write him off as a buffoon. You even joked about it. As Trump sat fuming in the audience at the 2011 White House correspondents’ dinner, you released what you said was your “official birth video.” It was a clip from “The Lion King.”

But he was just getting started. Birtherism turned out to be Trump’s original sin, the one from which so many others have followed — the 2015 presidential announcement speech in which Trump branded Mexican immigrants as drug dealers and rapists, his call for a ban on Muslims entering the country, his claim that a judge of Mexican descent born in Indiana was incapable of ruling fairly on a case involving Trump University, his declaration that there were “very fine people on both sides” of the deadly clashes between hate-fueled white supremacists and protesters in Charlottesville.

There was a political calculation behind every one of those vile statements, and as repulsed as we are with his latest racist rant, it is possible to see the calculation that is at work here as well.

Trump knows Democrats will set aside their internal differences, as they should, to rally around the four, who represent their party’s more liberal, more youthful edge. He intends to make Reps. Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.) the faces of the Democratic Party, as he wants America to see it.

“These are people that if they don’t like it here, they can leave,” he said Monday. “They hate our country. They hate it, I think, with a passion.”

The irony was rich, given how incessantly Trump himself criticized this country before he was elected, and how even his campaign slogan — “Make America Great Again” — denigrated both the nation and the progress it has made.

President Obama, what we need more than anything else right now is someone who can lift the country’s sights again. Someone who can charge us, as you once did, with a mission to “march into the future. Let us keep that promise, that American promise, and in the words of scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.”

Find your voice again. Reclaim your legacy. Do it now. It won’t wait until your memoirs.

His America sucks and you didn't build that tour was so uplifting. Obama the great divider.
An economic recovery from the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression. Millions of Americans gaining health insurance and people with pre-existing conditions were protected from losing coverage. Thousands of Americans didn’t die in Iraq, no racist tweet storms or admissions on video of sexual assault. A terrible time indeed under Obama.

Don't forget he had Bin Laden shot in the face.

My dead grandmother could of orchestrated a better economic recovery than that shitshow. If Obamacare is so awesome why do we need Medicare for all?

Who will become the next great republican president, Alex Jones?
Allen West will be the next President of the United States after President Trump's eight year term is over. Bank it.

No she couldn't have and the reason we need Medicare for all is A) Obamacare does not guarantee health care for everyone and it's price controls are not nearly strong enough and B) Republicans have further undermined the bill so badly that it is not nearly as effective as it should be. That said, it is still far better than what existed prior to Obamacare, but it could be so much better.

Also, something that hasn't been mentioned, the United States was not an international disgrace under Obama and a laughing stock in the G20. We did not actively undermine our traditional allies and our policies now are far closer to resembling 3rd world dictatorships than an international leader worthy of setting an example and leading other nations.

Yes because Obama getting fisted by China, Iran and Russia was so much winning.

He had Iran cooperating with an arms agreement, we are worse with China (how are those soy beans selling, fellas?), and he had Russia beaten back so badly they risked openly interfering with our election to manipulate it's outcome. Fortunately for them, there were a bunch of treasonous Republicans more than willing to accept their help and it worked. If they had lost that gamble, they would be in a far weaker position right now. Instead, they now have control of the President of the most powerful country on the planet. By every metric, we are in worse position now with these countries than we were under Obama. Unless playing second fiddle to these countries is your goal.

I do wonder if conservatives wouldn't rather be back on offense. Could go back to being outraged about tan suits, coffee cup salutes, dijon mustard, no jacket in the office, etc.

Instead of the shameful defensive effort with respect to Trump. That's assuming they're still capable of the feeling.

Let’s not suck Obama’s dick over Iraq. The war machine kept a steady pace under his watch. Plenty of dead soldiers and more of the same bullshit regime change wars. I’d still take Obama over the current shit show, but let’s not pretend like he reinvented the wheel while in office.

Don’t forget record number of people on food stamps; lowest labor participation rate since 1977; only President in history not to have even a single year with 3 percent GDP growth; letting his Secretary of State use a private server; $400 million in cash delivered to Iran followed by two more shipments that ended in a total payment to Iran for $1.3 billion; operation Fast and Furious giving thousands of guns to Mexican drug dealers; his Attorney General was the first AG ever to be held in contempt; multiple IRS abuses; Benghazi lies and misinformation; lies about Obamacare and it’s failure.....

Exactly. If Obamacare is so great, why does every Dem candidate talk about how they would fix healthcare????

Plays into their goal of 100% control. Get everybody to depend on government.

This was the beauty of the Bush/Cheney policy. It didn't matter who won the next election, there was no way the US could just leave.

I’m speaking more to the overall scope of our military involvements, and less specifically about Iraq. Agree to an extent, but sadly Obama was more of the same in a lot of regards. Still a good prez tho imo.

Well, let's not forget that Obama followed the worst president in US history and his failures,uh, that is until our current president, that is. Why do recent republican presidents suck so much?

May God have mercy on our next president and the mess he/she inherits.

Uh, because the current GOP has sabotaged the original Obama care plan?

Have you been paying attention?

If it wasn't for John McCain, a lot of needy Americans wouldn't even have healthcare today. Maybe it's time we took that risk away from those +/-21 million people or so?

btw, Just where is Trump's GREATEST HEALTH CARE PLAN THAT HE PROMISED AT REDUCED COSTS???????

We're still waiting for that proposal, or for that matter, any GOP proposal that they have promised for the past 10 years, that doesn't eliminate pre-existing conditions.

Have you been paying attention?

Now do Trump.
You mean a fake dossier paid for by his opponent followed by a sham $25 million Mueller investigation that found no obstruction and no collusion?!? Other than that, the strongest economy in decades! Lowest unemployment rate EVER for African-Americans and Hispanics. Lowest unemployment rate in 70 years for women. Consumer confidence, small business optimism both hitting record levels; the most middle class wealth creation through 401k growth...yeah, that all sucks.

He kept the pressure on them while minimizing the risk to our troops. Sure, I would have liked to have seen us not there at all, but that ship sailed in 2003. I don't think there is another policy we can really do there. Even Trump hasn't changed the approach much, other than removing any rule of engagement that might minimize civilian casualties.

The 2008 economy was nowhere near as bad as the late 70s-early 80s. Tell anyone who tried to buy a house back then that 2008 was worse.

Try telling that to the 800,000 people losing their jobs per month in late 2008-09.

Are you another revisionist historian? Granted interest rates were bad in the late 70's, but most people were working. I lived through both periods and I was working in the prior period. In 2008, I wasn't, with 30 years of experience under my belt.

...................

I was never really bothered by the tan suits. He generally wore them in the Summer months and they looked great on him. The man did in fact have a sense of style that reflected well on the office ... except,

... for that rolling up the sleeves thing; a style that he got from Mitt Romney. Thankfully those days are long gone.

And I did get over the coffee cup salutes. The man liked coffee, and preferred to carry his right along with him just like office workers the World over. It came down to: Was he an Army Officer in his soul? Or an office worker? He sided correctly.
