We would all agree with Kim Reynolds on this, right?

Seems like a waste of time if this is the reason

This bill was introduced as a recent report from the U.S. Department of Education shows declining math scores among Iowa students. According to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress, Iowa’s fourth graders fell from 7th to 30th and eighth graders from 15th to 23rd in the nation for math proficiency.

I thought we were blowing the Dept. of Education up? Why do we care what that group of groomers has to say about our students now?

State education department, not federal

What are you saying? Which one is being removed?

Also, I wonder why she thinks it will improve math proficiency? There is no math in the Citizenship test. Reading and writing? Sure, but no math.

Also, what's you avatar? You and some other guys flexing?

I agree that it is OK but it is really sad that it is necessary. Socially promoting students from Kindergarten to grade 8 or 9 is a bad rule and I am a former teacher.

I started kindergarten in 1956 and one girl in our Kind. class got held back because of not being ready to advance. All we knew was she was not in 1st grade with us the next school year.

From what I have read and heard, I think many of our adults are woefully un-educated and when I taught in the early 1980's I learned that parents could socially promote or pass their kids to the next grade even if they didnt learn, know, or improve much at the end of their current year. Kids learn this system so they know they dont have to learn squat. And parents are too lazy and soft to make their kids learn.

This bill would be an eye opener for a lot of parents and kids? My question is can they easily get a GED later?

This is not an endorsement of axing the DOE, but state control of education would be precisely the aim of that.

Btw, the article did briefly touch upon how the bill addresses math deficits.

Federal would be removed, I thought the standards were to be increased with math? It’s two guts I’ve trained with for years, both are 28, one is getting his pro card this year barring a catastrophe.

Weird that Kimmy expects kids to have a higher understanding of our democracy than the rapist.
Well, we know the Democrats idea of Democracy is trying to have their opponents thrown off the ballot or in jail for fabricated crimes.

They also like to anoint presidential nominees without the primary process of their candidate receiving one vote from the electorate. Democracy in action, right?

I love that expression. 😊

And yes, I know. I did create the OP. 😉

Stay on topic then. This is American born HS students passing a citizenship exam. Under some thinly veiled attempt at "improving math scores". My guess is, those that fail will most likely be under the microscope to see if they should be deported. Of course, our Iowa government will offer no type of preparation for this exam. Just some strange request for HS students.

As with all things, the devil is in the details. Abs honestly folks…it is a phuquin’ waste of time, effort and paper!
Back in the day, the state of Illinois required college grads to pass a similar test before they could receive their diplomas ( at least at Statecschools… I don’t know about private colleges)…they dumped this requirement in the early 70’s, I believe. Kids graduating from Illinois colleges are just as smart and qualified today as they were 50 years ago.,
