Weather Saturday

I think this favors the Hawks. Oline has been rolling, and Penn State no longer has Saquan. Go Hawks!

Iowa turned it over three times against Bucky in dry weather.

I don’t see rain as helping our cause.
Stanley seems to have junior Stanzi blood in him in that he's good for one boneheaded throw a game. So we have him warm up with PSU to get it out of his system. And the way the punt return team sprints off the field now I don't see that issue haunting us anymore.

I thought the same thing re Stanley/stanzi, but Nate doesn't rhyme with pick. No nickname, no trend. I think he shakes it.

So it was in 2009. PSU started the game with an 80 yard TD pass. But then early in the 4th quarter they forgot to block a man named Clayborn, and the Hawks pulled away in the 4th. I like lightning to strike twice!

I'm a bit concerned with Iowa's first game on a natural grass field, especially if there is precipitation. Not that our guys haven't played in those conditions ever before, but I just don't like adding in a new factor when the team is rolling.

This brings up a question

Do they have a natural grass field for them to still practice on? I know Kinnick, the indoor, and the outdoor plaza are all field turf. Is there a grass section on the outdoor practice area?

If there’s rain in the forecast all day/night, HV will keep that field covered up until warmups. At least that’s what they did in 09 when the hawks were out there. They didn’t even let the band out on the field for pregame

I’m pretty sure one of the two outdoor fields is grass.

Weather almost always changes this far out. Still a long time until Saturday. I'll bet it's sunny but a little chilly.

Worrying about things that we cannot control is not beneficial to the enjoyment of the game itself. Iowa wins this game!!!

They're not. I think the Defense will be the key to the game as it usually is. Maybe we see an ultra low scoring affair like 14 years ago. I think the teams are evenly matched in the end and if Iowa's offense can play well despite conditions we actually will have the upper hand.

One coach's observation that may benefit Iowa.
“When its raining the field gets wet, then all of a sudden everyones running slower”

Past Washington and Green Bay QB gave a former coach insight on the secret to playing well in the rain.
“Mark Brunell usually likes to soak his balls before a rainy game.”

The weather conditions will affect both teams. The
Hawks have to stay focused on winning the game.
They let their defense keep them in the game until
their offense wins the game.

One of the rainiest games Iowa has ever played took place in the 1984 Freedom Bowl in Angels Stadium, Anaheim, CA. Iowa beat Texas 55-17. The Longhorns had been ranked #1 around mid-season.

Iowa's Chuck Long completed 29 of 39 passes for 461 yards and six touchdowns in that rain storm. And it was, of course, in a natural turf stadium.

A blurb from the LA Times said, "Long ignored a driving rain to complete a record six touchdown passes, each to a different receiver. Iowa took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Texas rallied and trailed only 24-17 at halftime. The Hawkeyes scored 31 consecutive points in the third quarter to blow the game open. Iowa limited the Texas offense to 112 yards and five first downs in the second half."

None of that has anything to do with what will happen Saturday in State College, but it does show it's possible to have an explosive offense--including the passing game--and score a ton of points in a downpour against a good team.

Sounds like the rain should be ending as the day goes on and moves more toward a 'drizzle' after 4PM. Light winds. It may not end up being as big a factor as thought.

Accuweather is now calling for on-and-off showers, 60% chance at kickoff dropping to 50% as the game goes on. But again, ya never know for sure until it happens, but at least there's a chance it won't be a rain storm all game long.

Poor weather probably helps Iowa more than their opponent for the simple reason that the team who obsesses over execution gets a benefit under those conditions.

Wet conditions usually put the emphasis on line play on both sides of the ball and typically cuts back on any "athletic" advantage a team might have. I like Iowa's chances in the rain.

Looking like a wet tailgate and kickoff but minimal rain activity DURING the actual game. Just passing showers switching to cloudy skies by the evening. Should be a great fall weather game.

By my count, Iowa is 3-3 in games on natural grass going back to the start of the 2016 season (trying to forget the turf/shoe issues of the Rose Bowl so started with 2016 season).

Maintenance costs,... the artificial turf is more cost effective over time...

LOL. They build a gagillion-dollar practice facility, but don't have a natural grass field for practice so they can save some money on fertilizer and lawn mowers.
