Wednesday Practice Photos

Awesome seeing Cole and Hodge make it back.

True dat. If I were a LB competing for a spot I would listen to everything and anything Abdul Hodge had to say.

Funny, looking at the thumbnail minis my first reaction was a defensive player collided with a red-jerseyed QB (and Stanley to boot). I thought, man that guy got screamed at. Of course the defensive players wear white and it was Nate and Hock celebrating.

If Young can read blockers better this year and be a little more patient I see him having a big year. He is going to be a load to bring down time after time for teams. They have have Martin for change of pace.
I see some A-Rob in Toren, sneaky fast, chain mover but also the guy you want carrying the rock on 3rd and goal from the 2. Still can't believe Iowa left him in the 4th q. of the game vs. Sparty back in 2010 after we were up by about 30 points, concussion...rest is history. His huge 3rd and 15ish screen pass 1st down in the Big House circa 2010 was pretty sweet too!

Who else did Iowa have at RB in '10? There weren't many others.

If I remember correctly, the players and coaches wanted to emphasize a "killer instinct" ... so I think that part of the idea was to demonstrate such an attitude against MSU. Of course, as you rightly pointed out ... A-Rob got his bell rung ... and the rest is history.

Anyhow, as for any comparison between Toren and A-Rob ... I agree that both guys have and had more than adequate football speed ... but those 2 are completely different beasts. Toren is 5-11, 221 ... A-Rob was 5-9, 205. And, mind you, that is with Toren "lean" ...

That was Coker’s freshman year, and I think they had Hampton then too

They had Hampton and BW. Robinson was the only one to make it to a B1G game, and Coker finished the season. Even Coker had an injury before the season. Broken collarbone?

Talked to a friend who has been at practice this week. I asked him who's caught his eye. He said Welch, A Jones, Hockenson, and Groeneweg. The last one was a surprise, he just said he's a player.
Thanks for the tidbits, much appreciated and keep 'em coming! Perhaps Groeneweg has some Easley in him, Nick was sure a much needed surprise last year.

Homer, this was also the famous Dantonio 'let the team decide whether Rucker plays' game after the kid was released from jail for assault on Wed. or something. I'm not sure if he actually played, but he did travel and the Kinnick faithful certainly gave him the business!

I believe Sparty was undefeated going into that game and top 10, Kirk has zero love lost for MSU and Dantonio and I've long held that I've never seen Iowa run up a score on a team except for that game. Iowa played starters well into the 4th q, were running reverses, throwing the ball downfield and just hammered MSU. In my mind, this all stems from the previous year where Dantonio was on the field protesting a personal foul when Sandeman was knocked out. I saw this game in person and it was a beautiful Halloween day which also included this...

(there's an awesome guy in costume at the :32 mark!)

Totally agree. I remember the first game he got in (think it was NTS) he was running over his own lineman because he wanted to get downfield so quick!

I think Wegher only played in ‘09.
Correct, but was still on the team going into fall camp. He, Hampton and Arob were a wealth of riches heading into ‘10 season. Like I said, Arob was the only one to even play in a B1G game. Wegher never made it out of camp. Hampton was injured, maybe in the Arizona game,? and Coker would have spelled Arob, but he got hurt in camp too. Then Arob gets the concussion, and their left with Coker coming off injury.

That was kind of my point ... once Hampton went down with the ACL injury against Arizona ... Iowa's "depth" at RB was Marcus Coker ... however, he was a true freshman AND he was also coming off of a collar-bone injury (from the off-season).

They gave Marcus 10 carries against Ball State that season (4th game of the season). After that, he didn't see the field until the MSU game ... and, even then, he saw 16 carries!

He was then the primary carrier for the Hawks in the following game against Indiana 22 carries ... and he then he saw a few snaps here or there in the next few games and didn't get more until the Minnesota game, where he had 21 carries. Of course, for the bowl game, he exploded and had a great game ... rushing for 219 yards on 33 carries.

Iowa's group of RBs that season otherwise was comprised of Paki O'Meara (Paki-bomb!), Brad Rogers (more of a full-back), DeAndre Johnson (redshirting that year), Adam Robinson (starter), Jewell Hampton (out with ACL injury from Arizona game on), Brandon Wegher (not really a part of the team - was handing "personal" issues), and Marcus Coker (TR FR ... coming off of collar-bone injury in pre-season).

Brad Rogers had some carries in '10 as well ... but almost all of it came against Ball State (4th game of the season).

RB depth? What's that like? :)

BigO - I totally agree about that MSU game. No question as to whether Ferentz was sending a message. He just doesn’t run it up on teams.

IIRC, we are up 30-0 late in the first half and he uses a TIME OUT so he can get the offense back on the field to try and score AGAIN! Very unlike KF.

You could tell in his demeanor on the sidelines and the way he was still trying to run up the score in the 4th quarter that he was PISSED at Dantonio.

Exactly, I was shocked at what I was seeing and MSU and Cousins ran into a buzzsaw that day. Was that the game where McNutt had the insane 1-handed catch over the shoulder as well heading out of bounds? May have been...but yes, if there is a very short list of coaches that Kirk doesn't like, Dantonio is at the top of the list due to how he runs his program, lack of discipline, dirty tactics (MSU routinely acted 'injured' over the years to slow down no-huddle offenses) and negative recruiting against Iowa (I think Jaleel J. mentioned this after signing with Iowa).

BigO I think you made a great point about the year before when Colin Sandeman was knocked out. He was laying there not moving, one of those scary moments when you might be saying a prayer. Then Dantonio is on the field screaming at the refs and having a fit about the personal foul call. I was watching the game in a bar and Iowa fans were yelling at Dantonio with absolute venom and more than a few four-letter words.

Many thanks for the video, that was fun. I miss Tyler Sash. We all do.
