Weekend in Dubuque

had a pretty wild night that started in dubuque. met this hot chick, ended up going to her place in Peosta

that was a friday and we never even got out of bed til' Sunday a/m (other then to answer the door when the dominoes guy knocked).

DBQ is a great place to get laid

Someone mentioned Decorah here. I haven't been there in 30 years but am going to be there for a Friday and Saturday night in early May for baseball games at Luther College Field. Where is a good place to stay there close to some bars and restaurants? I like dive bars and local flavor.
Try the Hotel Winneshiek downtown. Old hotel that's been redone. Close to everything, including Luther.

Grew up 30 minutes south, oldest just graduated in May and now my sons r in their first year. NE Iowa is nothing like the rest of the state.

Forty years ago I traveled Iowa as a salesman and stayed at the Julian. I never left the Hotel and just went to the bar in the hotel as the barmaid was hot and we use to go out.

Is The Mining Co still open?
Yes - still at the mall.

Yes - still at the mall.
Weekend in Dubuque. I would go see that movie.

They used to have a great burger. Looks like a different menu now.

The Hotel Winneshiek is very nice and downtown. Plenty of VRBO’s in town as well. Might be cheaper than the hotel. Pulpit Rock is on the Luther side of the river as is Dixie’s, which is the original TG taproom. Excellent selection of beers there. If you want a high end meal try Rubiyat downtown, which also has a nice bar and beer selection. TG’s new brewery is on top of the hill a couple miles east of town. Great beers of course. Food is average

The Julian is on Main Street with lots of bars within a mile radius, easy walking. Gary Dolphin owns the iron bar which is also downtown but probably not a walk unless you don’t mind walking about 16 minutes.
Is there a decent hotel with a good pool area?

We are going to Dubuque with the kids.

I live out by Sherril The Barn has good food.Eichmans in Sageville is also tasty.DBQ is a short 10 minutes south.

If you are talking about Robert O'Brien, believe it or not, he used to date my landlady.🙂 She was in her 80s, and that was in 1979-80 time frame. She was the organist at the Christian Science church that, after they sold it, became a restaurant and bar, Da Vinci's restaurant being the last one to occupy it. I spoke with him a few times. Seemed like a nice person.

Small world. Dubuque’s are like bird shit…we’re everywhere.

Since I have lived in DBQ for 25 yrs, and went to Luther College, and had a daughter just graduate from Luther College, I feel I can contribute a few things:

Best restaurant in DBQ is Brazen, hands down, I've never had a bad meal there. Woodfire Grill at the Diamond Jo is next best, albeit pricey, and beyond that it's a matter of taste.

For beers, Dimensional and Jubeck's are your best bet. 7 Hills started out strong, but has faded in quality, IMO, but they do make a decent hoppy IPA (7-Headed Monster). At Dimensional, it's fun to get the "big board," a sampler of all their beers on tap (18, I recall). They make great Hazy IPAs, sours, and stouts. I agree that Jubeck is better for traditional beers, and both places have a nice atmosphere and are worth a stop. An under-rated place with very good beer flight options is Filament in the Diamond Jo Casino. Last time I was there, they had some really terrific beers on tap, and very solid pub food. But there are a ton of decent places to drink downtown these days, it's a buyer's market for choice.

For burgers in dive-bar environments, West DBQ Tap and Mining Co are good bets. and Paul's Tap is kind of a must-visit as a real blast to the past. Shot Tower's "Bianco" pizza is also a must if you like a) garlic, b) cheese, c)tomatoes, and d) even more garlic. It's a very good, memorable pie.

As for Decorah, Pulpit is terrific and cheap and charming, and the way TG kind of used to be before they moved outside of town. It's the type of place where you basically have to be by yourself in a corner not to have a conversation with someone you didn't know 5 min before, and the beers are great. Highly recommended

TG is now Goliath to Pulpit's David, and while the beers are still very good, I rather miss the little A-frame taproom they used to have up on College Drive. I wish they'd kept it just to preserve the atmosphere of having world-class beers in the most jakey thrown-together tap-room anywhere, with hand-me-down furniture, mismatched chairs, and a hand-made plywood bar (I recall). Man, I miss that place. But their shiny new cathedral of brew is worth a visit. Have a pizza at Mabe's, or Mexican food at the old gas station on Water St (Don Jose Restaurant it's now called, and it's surprisingly good), then go out to TG and have a few.

But under no circumstances should you EVER have "Combat Assaults" at the Corner Bar. DO NOT LET PEOPLE TALK YOU INTO THIS. Trust me: YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS.

That is all

West Dubuque cheeseburger and fries (homemade!) are the best. But its a really small place. It's one of my old neighborhood bars. Not very easy to find but damn good food!

If we’re going classic Dubuque towny (born and raised, now living in Boston)…lots of great recommendations in this thread, but you have to go to The Walnut Tap (The Nut) and get an Orange Crush. They go down real quick and smooth, but 3 or 4 in and you’ll be feeling pretty good. FTR, no matter how much you offer them, they will not give you the recipe.

There's a lot of beer in Dubuque, but not that much.
That is why You have a proper Dubuque Resident of Irish Decent as Wingman , Never put all your swimmers in one basket I have always said. That said He did advise Me that the odds go up measurably by just crossing the River and dealing with the Illini Women , He promised me not all drool and mouth breathe . Just most.
