Weezey jump step to the basket

Very impressed with this move. I haven’t seen it all year and it’s effective with his height. Weezy is so much better when consistently driving to the basket and not settling for 3 pointers.
It was a great move indeed, have definitely wondered on some takes this year if he could do it more, has come in soft at times when he has the potential to slam it home. I'll take driving to the basket AND 3 pointers though.

Soft and get his shot altered or blocked. My curiosity is the same as yours as to why it isn't like that more often.

Just think of the numbers JW and Garza could have had if only Nebraska had play any offense in the second half. I blame Nebraska:rolleyes:
I hate that team to the West of us...:p

If Weiskamp can improve finishing his drives to the basket next year (with some volume), he would improve his chances of getting drafted. He benefits a lot from Garza getting all the attention. if Garza stays, Weiskamp should stay as well and work a ton on getting to the basket and finishing during the offseason.

Players can always get better at everything. That said, Wieskamp's ticket to the NBA is not going to be finishing at the rim. If he does make it in the NBA, it will be as a 3 and D player. Iowa definitely needs him to attack the rim, because the Hawks don't really have anyone other than him who can do it. But he is not explosive, in how the NBA would define explosive.

Overall, Wieskamp has had a very good year. Here's hoping he can go on a tear where he shoots 50% from 3 over a 8 game stretch.

I get the sense that explosiveness is something that can be improved through S&C. To me, he looks more explosive than he did last year and that may have more to do with confidence than an actual change in his athletic ability. But I'm thinking of how players have developed in Iowa's football program, guys who became more explosive and faster during their four/five years in the program. Whether that can be done in the same way in basketball? I don't know, but another year of growth in that department seems like it would help him--even if it was just increased confidence.

I feel like he is still in the process of believing in how good he can be. Another offseason and getting to show what he can do his junior year in college could be huge. Once he declares, all the new tape the NBA will have on him will come from the G League or something like that and, like with most players after college, he won't get the same minutes or have the same type of role he has and can have in college.

I love his improvement this year attacking the basket. He's been swatted a fair bit but that's going to happen in this league. It's a great sign that he continues to go to the rim and I've noticed him doing a better job of using his body to shield off the defender and draw the foul. Really impressed with how Weezy has expanded his game this year and I still don't think he has shot the ball all that well by his standards. If he gets hot down the stretch we are going to be a very dangerous team

Who is our s&c coach?

I agree that Weesy should take it hard to the basket more often. It will help give him more room to shoot and give us another threat when shots aren't falling. Doing it against the Huskers is a LOT easier than almost any other team in the B1G. Great centers in the B1G this year.

It helps when the other team doesn’t have anyone over 6’8”.

He took advantage of what was available. He's an alpha scorer; that's his primary purpose on the court. Hope to see a lot more of that in upcoming games.
The more he scores all over the court the more dangerous he is from the opponent perspective and the more it opens up Garza.

Joe Dub is a versatile scorer. Joe Dub is better at all the things he does, Luka is obviously far better at all the things he does, Now there's the third option that can score all over the court. Although he shot poorly yesterday, CJ adds the third diverse scorer. I think that's what makes this team better than last year's team.

I was fortunate enough to see it in person last night. Feels like he went to it because he wasn’t trusting his 3 point shot. It is such a powerful, aggressive, strong move. Looked unstoppable. I was hoping that Fran had him in the film room today with his eyes pried open forcing him to watch himself do that move over and over and over again in attempt to get him to understand how good he is. Took one dribble to get from the three point line to rattling the rim. He also has a rebound and put back early in the game that was equally impressive.

he has the talent to score 25 a game however he wants to do it, but is just such a great team player.

I think that's it, getting him to understand how good he actually is. I know we're in the era of one-and-done, but before that was the case guys actually developed over their years in college. Joe's starting to get it and I think he'll have even more belief in himself next year. If Garza and Weiskamp return to Iowa next year, we're looking at a team that will have goals to win the B10 and the Final Four. Not saying they'll get there necessarily, but another year of development and belief by those guys (and CJF and Joe T. and Connor) and Iowa could be in that conversation.
