Weezy minus CJ

Weezy is struggling big time without CJ in the lineup. This has been the case @NE, @IN, @ MN and OH. Clearly teams can play him much tighter without CJ to guard. Bet he is really loookg forward to his buddy coming back soon.

I MISS CJ Weezey!

Small sample sizes matter. He also had a huge game against Maryland. And a very good game against Penn State when Frederick played 14 minutes. Very efficient 13 points in the win at Syracuse when Frederick didn't play.

That said, teams definitely are focusing lots of attention on him with Frederick out. Basically leaving Conor, Evelyn and Toussaint alone out at the 3-point line. Those 3 went 6-10 on mostly open 3's. He got more good looks tonight than he has been, he just missed some open shots tonight.

He was getting a lot of defense on him... you saw what he could do when he got free now and then. Not worried.

Great call really need CJ back great win but role players wont carry us....Luka CJF Joey will
I agree Iowa is better with CJF...

Please acknowledge that Iowa flat out bull-rushed tOSU tonight opening up a 19 point 1st half lead and were never seriously threatened...

with out CJF Kriener and Pemsl are getting more minutes and again showed their value:

7-8 FG, 21pts 12R 3A, 2steals 1block.

Holy shit, baby we should’ve been playing those guys more....?

and tOSU = best defense in the B1G...

Joe W REALLY needs a CJ. In a way it exposes Joe's weakness in not being able to create on his own. At the level that an NBA undergraduate draftee would need to perform at.... Which he is not.

Now, I still think Joe has a potential to make an NBA roster some day, but it is not next year.

On the bright side, CJF and Joe W should explode next season(assuming Garza stays). Throw in JBo, Nunge and one or three of our new recruits, that also shoots well from downtown, and an improving CMac, and they will have a field day!

Very much looking forward to next year. But That thought includes Mr. All-American. Hope it happens! We will be writing history if so....bet the house on it!

He missed 4 or 5 wide open 3s.

If CJ played tonight Andre Wesson still would have guarded Joe. Very little would have been different.

Joe is always going to draw the other teams best defender.

I was thinking back to last year with JBo and wondering a similar thing about Weezy.

Seems many times Weezy would get it crankin' after JBo got the threes started. Kinda like they fed off each other, but more one way than the other.

Just wondering if being "the guy" from outside overwhelms him a bit.

Or, maybe it's just a slump.

That third versatile scorer that makes Iowa hard to guard. You can double Garzilla, and double and press one other player but its very hard to pick up that third versatile scorer.

Its so much easier to defend that 3rd scorer if he's just a spot shooter-Isaiah Moss for example. If the 3rd scorer can shoot, score off cuts and penetration and hit the mid range jump shot, as can CJ, you can't afford to suffocate Joe Dub.

I think Joe T can become yet another versatile scorer. Shot well lately. As his floor vision and judgment improve see a lot of "and one" in his future. That could make Iowa a serious national contender next season.

Mostly a little slump produced by a more suffocating defense in CJ's absence.

Sweet dunk last night

Joe is a great system player he will not force anything

I just think he rushed his threes last night but still had 13 points and fouled Wesson out

The 3rd scorer is -already- on the team...

last night vs tOSU. he scored 21pt, grabbed 12 rebounds, and 3 assists in 7-8 FG, and drew 10 fouls
Versus MN, he scored 16pts, and grabbed 10 rebounds

The elusive 3rd scorer is on the team and is averaging 18.5 pts/Gm when given 40m

The really good news about CJF's missed time is that Bakari and Pemsl have gained a lot of confidence. Suddenly, Iowa's bench looks like it will be helpful even when CJF returns. IF CJ's able to play close to what he had been prior to February and Pemsl and Bakari can continue to play with confidence, Iowa could do some damage in the postseason.

You are absolutely correct...!

We’ve devoted an entire thread unpacking this topic with some excellent debate and great content which I invite you to review. https://iowa.forums.rivals.com/thre...he-elimination-of-the-4-guard-offense.304327/

I put for that, in addition to your observation, that it would -require- Fran to utilize a bigger lineup, which I posited before the MN would result in a number of results, including better defense, without too much of a drop in offense (which was a excess commodity), an possibly running table (which was quite a contrary position to many here that were predicting gloom and even missing the tourney).

I invite you to read that and look forward to your take....

I would agree with your assessment as well!

Bottom line, he needs to pick up his game if this team is going to be playing the second weekend of the NCAAs.

Cant wait wait till he get our second best overall player and third scorer back in CJ Fredericks......Hawks are so much better with him.....Cant wait go Hawks...

I really think this team will flourish even more once they get into the tourney and out of the meat grinder of the Big Ten. Remember the Big Ten is much more physical and as others have said, the refs seems to be a part of that mindset that the Big Ten is a rough-and-tumble conference.

in the tourney, I think it’s possible there will be more freedom of movement and will benefit a strong and efficient offense like Iowa who likes to get to the free throw line. And I think we will see that benefit Wieskamp’s game.

I'm not sure it's because of CJF....JW just hasn't been shooting well from distance.

In CJs last 4 games JW shot 4/15 from 3. Hes only averaging 1 per game this month. Really hoping he gets back into a groove
