Well, this BS just happened again...

I think what drew the attention was looking back and holding the ball out... as much as the step.
Flagging a guy for this is pretty weak...but what's worse is taking the TD off the board. If you MUST throw the damn flag... mark off the penalty on the kickoff. If they're not gonna remove the rule at least make that change. If a player is unabated to the end zone do NOT take away the score.

You can't high step into the end zone, but when you sack the QB, you can run all around like a crazy man celebrating and that is fine.
That one has always killed me too. The defense can get pushed up and down the field all day, then they make a play and strut around like a peacock. I think they should let the OL do a little showboat dance, everytime they run the ball for ten yards or more...

Personally, I think every TD should be video reviewed moving forward. Use the latest image analysis software to determine whether or not the player’s stride changes in any perceptible manner. Err on the side of caution and flag anything the software picks up, however subtle. That’ll really improve the game...

For the most part I'm ok with the rule, and I was in the "Wadley was wrong" camp for his play, but this call was ridiculous. Refs throwing a flag because the player took one subtle hop, and they don't feel like the player stepped properly, is absurd.

That rule was put in place to get rid of over-the-top, Deion Sanders-like blatant taunting while a player is going to the end zone. They need to reserve making calls like this for that, and nothing less. Since refs have proven multiple times to not be able to distinguish the difference, they probably need to get rid of the rule altogether, which is a shame, considering its original purpose.

It'll be in the NCAA's best interest, too. The longer the game drags on, the longer fans stick around, the more food and drinks they'll sell, the more money leaves the fans and goes to the bloated organizations.

I say flag everything that even remotely appears to demonstrate a sense of fun or enjoyment. The rules committee shouldn't rest until every last bit of personal enthusiasm has been purged. It will make for a smoother transition to the near future when we will be watching actual robots "playing" the game.

Cool. When the NFL starts playing with robots I will start watching again.

Yea this is terrible. Even mark the penalty on the extra point if you want. These kids are the reason refs have a job, and they make the ncaa millions. As long as they're not throwing the ball at opponent or excessively directing a taunt at the other team, get over it.

Also the holding calls today for Hawks? Yikes, gophers dline men were simply falling over and they assumed a hold. Happened three times.

Those were terrible calls on Iowa for holding. I guarantee there were some holds but call them and not the three that they did because there was nothing there.

Same as the TCU game with ISU. I swear ISU and Minnesota must of sent film into their respective league office complaining about holds so they have the refs go out of their way to call both teams for holds that were questionable at best.

I agree this is BS, but I also think it's pretty easy not to do it. Knowing it can bring a flag, it's a really stupid thing to do. Still, I feel bad for the kid.

I view silly Trace McSorley td celebrations or things of that nature a penalty before a few high steps before the end zone. How do some of those guys get away with that stuff?

Very subtle "look back". BS call, but in fairness to the ref, it's BS rule.

Players need to act like they've been there before. The high-stepping flag is a bit extreme I agree. I think most officials should just talk to the player and tell them to knock it off. Now if they do it a 2nd time, okay then flag them.

What the officials are trying to avoid is a fight so to speak. Some people think if a team scores and the player is rubbing it in, the other team is going to come back with cheap shots and what not. I can understand wanting to keep the peace, but at the end of the day these are 18-23 yr olds playing a game. I say allow high stepping if its inside the 5yd line. Now if they start high stepping at the 15-20yd line, then okay maybe a little too extreme.

Would you flag a guy who runs backwards into the end zone, pointing at the defensive player? I think that crap should stop.

Fan behavior should be flagged as well. All that yelling and screaming? Very unsportsmanlike like, don't you think? ;) I think a nice golf clap would be more appropriate.

Agreed. But I think it was the combo of all three...looked back, held out that ball and pranced a bit. Still a lame call...but that's my take on why the ref flagged it.

I'm OK with it if they want to do something about blatant taunting. Under that assumption, I think blatant taunting should be a warning, followed by a penalty if it continues. High stepping is not blatant taunting. Looking back is not taunting...it may just be looking to see if anyone is catching you.

Standing over a guy you just administered a brutal hit to and nodding your head, wagging your finger in that "no, no, no" motion, or walking around strutting like a peacock after a sack are blatant...flag 'em if you want.

High stepping is no more taunting than doing a chest bump with a teammate after a score. If you're going to call that, call every form of celebration.
