I know McSorley tweaked his knee but was it as bad as thought? On the long touchdown run, our defense sold out, really did not take McSorley's running ability into account. I watched the game again last night, no safeties back and our DE was in an all out pass rush, and went wide so the lane was wide open. Only our DB down field who got blocked.

After that play we stayed in our lanes and played better assignment football.

A better phrase for duped is "out coached"

Agree. I think Phil Parker has done a great job with the defense and love his aggressiveness, but it sure looked like we assumed McSorley wouldn’t run it there. I do think we got duped on that one. Credit to PSU and McSorley. Smart and gutsy call.

Hard to fault the call or the defense, though, even though we could have executed better. The D played a heck of a game overall.

I think you're absolutely right, OP. I think, like the broadcasters opined, that the Iowa defense thought McSorley was too injured to run and played that play accordingly. No way he gets loose like that otherwise. It was the only time Iowa made that mistake the whole game.

I blame Cael Sanderson and the NLWC.

This was far from Trace’s best game, but even on an off day the kid is a warrior. Stevens might have been a better option after Trace’s injury but given what Trace has done before they just couldn’t keep him out of the game. How he pulled off a 51 yard touchdown run with an injured knee is beyond me. But of course later he hands it back on a boneheaded pick 6 pass into double coverage. Anyway good luck on the remaining games. The BT West is getting interesting again.

Penn State coordinators have Iowas number for sure. Defensively and offensively they game plan and adjust accordingly to win the chess match.

Their defensive coordinator especially. The way he disguised coverages and blitzes REALLY messed with Stanley, and it allowed them to hide their softness in the middle.

Their OC simply caught Phil in the wrong playcall on what had been an okay drive for the Iowa D. Shit happens. Other than that, Iowa really only gave up 1 other good offensive drive (can't blame the D when we give PSU the ball at our own 3).

Hockaday was the only guy that could have made the play. He crashed the line on the left after Mcsorly faked to the RB and kept it. Nothing but green field ahead.
