I was really looking forward to seeing how Kriener would respond to some quality competition. Unfortunately Kriener again had some trouble with Western Christians length and skill as he shot 4-11 from the field and had trouble getting into a ryhtym. Kriener is 4 for 16 from the field this year against Western but has been able to grab 18 rebounds against them. Of course its hard to make too many judgements from just two games but it looks like Kriener may need a couple years in Iowa City to work on his offense. I wonder if he will redshirt?

Dutch people are like Piranha...probably swarmed him... I liked the clips I saw of his mobility, ability... And...he is just a "baby" in terms of development...2 years or so of development at Iowa will do wonders...IMHO...

It's hard to score a lot when you're triple-teamed. He does a good job in feeding his teammates in those situations. He'll play plenty next year for Fran.

I'm not sure he is a come right in and contribute guy. A RS year would do him a lot of good.

I also agree that he will redshirt next year and probably wont contribute to the Hawks til 2018. We have plenty of capable players that are able to play center next year we wont need to rush him. Uhl, Wagner, Cook and Baer are all capable of playing the center role.

I'm in favor of a RS as well. Kriener is the type of guy that could have an avg 4yr college basketball career but could have a really good career with a 4th year JR season and 5th year SR season. Fran has recruited a lot of Bo Ryan type of players that tend to become really good their 4th and 5th years. I would love to see Fran RS most of his FR. We like to wonder what would have been if guys like Gabe, Clemmons and maybe even Uhl had a 5th yr.

We are going to need the depth and size from either Pemsl or Kreiner. My guess is that whoever is the better defender will play, the other redshirt.

I agree. I think Cook and Bohannen will play next year for sure along with whoever develops quicker between Pemsl or Kreiner.

I remember watching Woodbury play at State his SR year and thinking this guy doesn't seem close to ready to play. I'm sure it's hard to get a good read if a HS team emphasizes shutting you down and double/triple teams you when you catch the ball. I'll wait to see how he plays in a structured system before I make any judgments.

This is why I think he redshirts and Pemsl plays next year. Pemsl also has been getting double teamed and even triple teamed throughout the past couple seasons but he has shown a knack at still finding his offense and taking over games. I think Pemsl has an advantage on both O and D over Kriener and I think that comes from playing better competition on a regular basis. Kriener had some trouble defending against the 6'9" backup that Hull put out there. I think Kriener will be a fine ball player at Iowa I just think it will take a couple years and a redshirt could do him a lot of good. Iowa will have Uhl, Jones, Wagner, Cook and Pemsl the next two seasons so Iowa should be able to bring Kriener along slowly.

I watched both games this year, as well as one of the games vs WC last year. He's very athletic, but I think a few years development will help him. His offense was ok vs Western, I thought he shot too many outside shots instead of attacking the rim. I wish he would have made a bigger impact defensively and on the glass, WC's 6'6" VanLingen had 25 points the first game, and sat out half of the 2nd game with foul trouble and still finished with 18. This is one of the few times where Spirit Lake will play a team that has the size to matchup with Kriener.

Don't count on anything from him until at least his third year in the program. He's the definition of a project. Getting Pemsl and Cook allows Fran to take a shot in the dark with Kreiner and see what he gets

Fran recruited Pemsl as a 3 or a stretch 4. Kriener is a true 5. Fran doesn't see them playing the same role.

Right. Pemsl and Kriener aren't the same type of player. For one thing, I heard McCaffery say the other day that Pemsl was only 6'7.5"
Kriener much bigger post player.

Pemsl did have another nice game last night against CR Jefferson: 39 points and 20 boards.

Bohannon had a decent game in a losing effort to CR Xavier (coached by Ryan Luehrsmann): 26 points, 6 boards.

Pemsl's knee must finally be getting more healthy I assume if he is putting up 39 and 20? He looked like an old man trying to run with the kids during last year's State Tourney.

Kriener and Pemsl are apples and oranges. I agree with most of what had been posted above. They are very different kids of players. The taller Kriener may have the most ultimate upside and may be terrific in a couple of years. Pemsl is more college-ready after four years starting in the very tough Mississippi Valley Conference. This is easily his best year of playing and he is jumping better-- with two-hand dunks both forward and backwards over his head in his last two games. I still think he is a little injury-prone, but I hope he can stay healthy and get a little faster. Seems like every year his team has a couple of starters out with injuries, and the same holds true this year as they are currently down two starters (Maiers and Timmerman-- wrist fracture and severe ankle sprain).

Hopefully he goes to Iowa City with something to prove and a big chip on his shoulder, because he's going to need it. Glad he's a Hawk. That's all I'm going to say!

Ive watched many of the Spirit Lake games this year on live stream. One thing that shocks me is that Spirit Lake rarely runs a play for him. very rarely do they set a screen for him and he is continuously doubled and triple team. The coach it appears is trying to get other players involved which in the long run may be most beneficial to the team. He basically just lets Kriener get what he can get. A couple things to credit Kriener with is that he still gets 21 and 12 while not requiring the offense to be run thru him. He is a willing and capable passer which is a key characteristic for Fran. Ultimate success of next years four freshman will depend on who can pick up all of the offensive and defensive sets and fit a role that Fran has designed for them while not making mistakes. Long term success probably depends on who is willing to work the hardest and has the highest ceiling when it comes to potential. This year Wegner is the only true freshman that gets legitimate minutes. He gets those minutes in a very defined role where he can be successful.

Many people throw out comparisons for players and I've seen many on Kriener. I would compare him more towards Seth Tuttle. Very similar in size and athleticism along with feel for the game. Seth played in the Corn Bowl conference which is a 1a/2a conference and does not compare to the Lakes conference which is primarily a 3a conference along with a couple of 2a schools. Point is, Seth could play and he proved it, didn't matter where he played HS ball,
