I would really like to know what I am missing here...It seems many fans are jumping off the boat and acting like the sky is falling with how the season has started. Yes, it is VERY FRUSTRATING to start the season 0-2. I also understand being frustrated with play calling, game plan, second half adjustments, and other issues we have had recently in the second half of games since halfway through last season, not including the bowl game. Those are very big frustrations and concerns. I totally understand those frustrations because it ticks me off too. What I don't understand is some of the other stuff that is being thrown out there by our fans in regards to KF, that this is the end, the racial stuff has led to all of these issues, that we are going to become Illinois 2.0, etc...What am I missing? I am not ready to jump off the boat and say we're screwed.
In my opinion, our expectations for this season should have been more realistic and not as high based upon several things. First, this is the Covid season and we have 9 games/shortened schedule. That provides no wiggle room. Typically we open the season with a lower non-power 5 school or FCS, ISU, and then a mid-major opponent. That didn't happen. We started the season with Purdue, Northwestern, and now MSU tomorrow. That is a big difference and should have shown us that growing pains might happen. What am I missing.
Second, we are starting a new QB in addition to new guys on defense in key spots. We had to replace Wirfs, AJ, and Geno. Those are huge losses. Who would have thought that Stone would take off early? For a program like Iowa you can't have 3-4 straight seasons of losing multiple players to the NFL without having some sort of a drop off. Yes, we should have known that we could lose Wirfs and AJ or even been more prepared at QB, but I am still not sure what I am missing..
Third, we had no spring ball and did not have our traditional summer program. Again, for a program like Iowa that is huge. Typically, we would have had 4-5 scrimmages. This year I have heard we had like one. That is tough and provides no time to break in a new Qb or new starters on the defense or oline. What am I missing...
Finally, please notice that I have not said one thing about the racial stuff that happened this season or anything with Doyle....I know that is huge, but did not have anything to do with anything I discussed above. I have also not brought up any concerns on the three players who recently entered the transfer portal. I think those were all playing time related and nothing to do with the state of program. With the transfer rules being very relaxed this will only be an issue with every school not just at Iowa. Consequently, what am I missing....
I have always felt that our loyalty and pride we take in the Hawkeyes sets us apart from most other programs. We are very passionate, but also times very quick to jump of the ship and act like the sky is falling. In my opinion, that is what is happening here. Let's all pump the breaks, be respectful and happy we can have these discussions (in August it looked like we wouldn't), and cheer our Hawks onto victory. I personally believe that KF is the right man for the job and will get it done. Even though this is going to be his toughest obstacle he'll face, I believe he'll get it done. But again, what am I missing.....
