Apparently possible federal corruption charges.

Mr. Smisek stepped down as CEO of United Airlines this afternoon after a federal investigation into the potential bribing of a government official. The official in question happens to be a close confidant of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

This is a big deal for Chris Christie. Somehow he's been able to spin that all of his top aides weren't really that important or close to him in the GW Bridge or Superstorm Sandy fund issues. But, he's got a problem here. United just cut two executives off at the knees to save themselves. Christie cannot deny the deep relationship between himself and Samson.

There were actually 3 UAL execs cut. Smisek the CEO and 2 senior VP involved in government contracts. Still looking bad for Christie. Lead story on the NYT.
